Neat place! Are you talking about the trail that continues upward? That one, as you probably saw, was pretty washed out. It just goes to the top of the peak. We went part of of the way up it a couple of years ago but it started snowing and -- well, we decided it was a little to dangerous to continue.
Middle March Rd just goes through the pass and into Pearce-Sunsites. There are a couple of mining roads back there that look interesting.

I'll put the date on the ASA4WDC Calendar and ask Sandee McCullen to broadcast a message to all the folks she has email addresses for. This will spread the word quickly. I am doing Mud Springs tomorrow so will take care of this late Saturday or first thing on Sunday. Thanks for doing the footwork. I am just way way too busy. The CHerry Creek trip will definitely be a vacation!

Did however get an entire list of things that need to be fixed before Cherry

Great! What kind of tires, and what size?
"Within an hour" depends on where you live. The Coves area by Saguaro Lake is
close, particularly in the East Valley. From the North, Table Mesa Road or
Crown King Road might be good. From Carefree, several roads by Bartlett Lake
or Table Mesa Road. South, consider Box Canyon. Directions for all of these
have been posted recently so check the archives.
Be advised it's supposed to rain tomorrow (of all things!).
Also, I recommend you don't go out alone, particularly for Class 3 and above.
Anyone else up for a quickie? You might be able to talk me into a short run to
the Coves Sunday, maybe.

Subject: Mud Springs -- again
Hi All,
I finally got the opportunity to do the Mud Springs Trail. Lots of off-camber and rought road. There are four obstacles on the trail that make it a bit of a challenge. First the uphill there is an off-camber spot around a boulder. This one can suck you in of you are not careful. The Second is the boulder field that Doug mentioned. The boulder field is on a fairly steep slope. The third obstacle is a tight drop into a rocky wash. The fourth is another wash crossing that has two options. The route I took was the lower route only because the ZJ is a bit low to the ground. Nevertheless, we made it back to the line shack at the end of the trail by 12:30pm. Since the trail is a deadend, you have to go back through the same obstacles on the way out. The steep hill with the big boulder is, by far, the most difficult. We had a brand new Toy Tacoma (6" lift and 33" tires) almost roll in the off-camber spot on the way down. I almost laid the ZJ against the big boulder on the way down myself, but managed to just skim by it.
The Mud Springs Trail, in my book, rates a solid 3.5. You need clearance, some sort of traction adding device in either front or rear differential, and 4-wheeling experience. This isn't the trail to learn how to 4-wheel on unless you really don't care about your Jeep! We were off the trail around 4:30pm.

I tried out my new tires this afternoon at the coves and am increadible impressed! I got the bfg all terrains, 31 inch. There are hills at the coves that I failed misreably at before and some I didn't even bother trying. Today I effortlessly climbed them all... More traction and less slip seems to be so much easier on the drivetrain also. Has anyone gone on up to highway 87 and a few more miles north east to the Sycamoore creek wash? It seems to be mostly an atv playground but there is some good hill climbs down in there. I don't know if it's the same Sycamoore creek trail area mentioned elswhere. Oh ya, The coves were filthy.
So whens the next run!

Glad the tires worked out. Makes a big difference.
As to your question on Sycamore Creek, SR87 generally follows Sycamore
Creek to the north east, so you can access the creek from a number of
different spots.
Next run planned is March 20 to the Sierra Anchas via Cherry Creek, as
an overnight.

All that HP, and 4.56 gears...seems like a waste. An Atlas II 4.2:1 t-case and 4.56 diff gears will produce an outstanding crawl rate, more matched to a Briggs and Straton than a v-10 :) Still, must be nice having that kinda cash to toss around...

Been thinking about a trip to Moab, but probably won't make it this
Easter. However, I understand there's supposed to be some get together
in Ouray (sp?) in late September that I'd like to go to. Do you know

It's theApril 99 issue of 4 wheel drive & sport utility. It also has the whole
jeep jamboree schedule in it.I am also going to try to make it to the coves

Lower Radiator Hose has the beginnigs of a hole (some dohicky has been banging

Rear Diff. gasket (leaking)
Front steering stabilizer (leaking)
I have already replaced the radiator and a bunch of electrical "stuff."

Subject: Re: Bad experiences....
My Jeep hasn't let me down yet, but my S-10 Blazer had some serious
trouble... The first time I EVER went wheeling was in it (it was my
first 4WD.) We were in Flag up off Woody Mtn Rd. in the winter- mass
ice and snow. Well, we got stuck. "No problem" says I, and shift into
4WD and...nothing! This would be when I learned that the 4WD in this
vehicle currently did not work, and I was stuck in ice and muck with
only an open rear differential to save me, no shovels or other recovery
tools. Good Gawd! A couple hours later we had moved about 5 feet (by
putting wood under both back wheels) when some guy in a K5 came by with
65" swampers (OK, they were probably more like 38", but when sitting
next to my bald 235/15s they looked huge) and pulled us out. I learned
a lot about being prepared, and making sure your equipment works BEFORE
you need it...
So a month later with off-road tires (30X9.50 mudders) and working 4WD
we went back. We made it much much much farther, we crossed a stream
that was toward the middle of the doors and followed the road (which
someone had done recently from the tracks.) We came around a corner,
and the tracks stopped. We slowed before the end of the tracks, and the
truck suddenly seemed to just drop down about a foot. Thats when we
found out we were not actually on the road bed any longer. My brand new
30" tires were buried about 15"'s and we were screwed. At least we had
shovels, chains, and a come-along. This was in the morning (about
9AM.) At around 3PM we had moved the truck about 50-75 feet, and two
vehicles that had tried to help us were stuck about another 40-50 feet
beyond. One of those got himself out and left (Ford Ranger w/ 32"). We
built a road over the muck with forest wood, and got to the next stuck
truck (solid axle Toyota w/ 33" BFGs) around 4PM. We pulled him out,
unbuilt the road behind us and rebuilt it in front of us and managed to
drive the 150 feet or so back to where we knew there was road. We then
unbuilt the road and repatrioted the wood back to the forest (I think it
was 6-7PM+ now, it was dark) and got the heck out. We voted to wait
till Spring to go back and fill in the holes we had made.
The worst in my jeep ('91 YJ) so far was when the tranny went out (it
was filled with water, and I hadn't checked it lately.) It didn't
happen while wheeling, at least...

OK I have a one.
I was with a friend of mine trying out some of the tougher trails at the
lower salt river (R.I.P.). Well as i was crawling down this one hill i slid
sideways & the left front wheel slid into a crack & i heard a familiar Pssss
sound coming from the tire. Well i shut the engine off & put on the E-brake
so i wouldn't slide anymore. i looked at the front tire and after a little
digging found that the only problem was that the valve stem got tweaked and
was leaking, in fact after moving the offending rock it stopped leaking. I
hopped in the jeep started it up and started to back up in 4low (Anyone
notice what i forgot to do?). Well after backing up the hill i checked out
the tire & it looked fine & didn't seem to be leaking so i started back.
About the time i was getting to the main road my Brake light came on. I
jumped out to check things out and noticed fluid leaking from my right rear
wheel. You guessed it when i backed up i still had the E-brake on & broke
the side of my slave cylinder open, Bent the backing plate & mangled one
brake shoe. Fortunately my Mother lived close by so i fixed it in her
driveway in the dark.
BTW this was with my old YJ.

Subject: Treasure Hunt Weekend
Well, I just got back from the Copperstate 4-wheelers Treasure Hunt. It was held in Winkelman this year. Camped out in the city park. They plotted out 3 trails.
The tresure hunt trail takes you all over an area SW of Winkelman (anyone been out there?). Easy scenic trail.
The Territorial Trivia Trail was another easy trail with incredible scenery. I want to go back to this one again!
The family fun trail on Sunday (today) was combined with the tough trail. We were SE of Winkelman for this one. It's a nice loop trail that crosses the Gila River twice. Water levels were over the hubs. This trail has a alternate 4.5 section that ends at the base of a 2-stage waterfall. This trail has short steep rocky hills and a bunch of wash running.
If you combine the Trivia Trail and the Sunday trail you have a pretty full day of 4-wheeling. Winkelman is about 1 hr 45 min from my home. I live in N Mesa. Winkelman is south of Superior on SR177. SR177 between Superior and Winkelman has 3 steep hills: 2-10%ers and 1-11%. It is, by itself, a very scenic route.
See you next weekend!

I'm not sure. I looked for Currie awhile ago, too but figured they knew

Here's what I did find, and I'm passing the request to the rest of the AZ

Ok all,
It's been MIGHTY QUIET the last week or so. There's supposed to be an
overnighter this weekend, but I haven't heard hardly a peep this month
about it. The trash run (the Coves) has dropped off the discussions, and
nobody is looking for a new run. What's going on?
Anybody out there?

Well, the trash run is still on for April, and Cherry Creek is this
weekend.
As to new runs, I have a suggestion. I came across a trail in the
Mineral Mountain area that I've named the Back Door Trail, since it goes
to the Woodpecker mine from a different direction than the main trail.
It's a bit challenging, (strong class 3, light class 4, w/ rock
crawling, but easier than the Woodpecker trail (the one in the wash).
I'd be up for this one in a week or two. For those that might not want
to do the Back Door trail, an alternate and relatively easy route to the
mine could be taken, and we could meet there for lunch, and then head up
to Ajax mine. Those wanting a challenge, could take the class 4 route to
Ajax, and those that don't can take the main trail, which roughly
parallels the wash. Should make for a good run for all concerned.

I just had a BAD jeep week.....On Sunday I lost my gas tank to a BIG

I just picked up a magazine with an article about Ouray and the Az jamboree.
It's theApril 99 issue of 4 wheel drive & sport utility. It also has the whole
jeep jamboree schedule in it.I am also going to try to make it to the coves
cleanup run.

Nothing that bad has happened to me, but while I was having my lift installed
on Saturday I was given the following list of things wrong:
Lower Radiator Hose has the beginnigs of a hole (some dohicky has been banging
into it when off-road)
Rear Diff. gasket (leaking)
Front steering stabilizer (leaking)
I have already replaced the radiator and a bunch of electrical "stuff."
Conveniently everything happens for me when I am in Phoenix and is under
warranty!
See everyone on the 20th.

Has anyone been out on the Tonopah Mountain Trail? It's a 3.0-4.0 rated trail that goes up the side of Tonopah Mtn to a group of radio towers. and then down an easy graded road. A friend of mine had been out there several years ago and thought it would a fun one to try, but didn't have the opportunity. It was was brought up again at a recent AZ Lo-Rangers Mtg.
Also, has anyone been out on the trails around the Eagle Tail Wilderness area? This might be the same area. I am not sure. Those mountains are really awesome looking!

I'm not sure. I looked for Currie awhile ago, too but figured they knew
they didn't need a big Web presence, since everybody seems to know them.
Here's what I did find, and I'm passing the request to the rest of the AZ

numbers. The links sites I checked with all seem to refer back to these

Ok all,
It's been MIGHTY QUIET the last week or so.
