April 3 or April 24. This should give us enough time to get the word out and maybe some fliers into local 4x4 shops and a press release to the newspapers/media.

Apr 3 or 24 sounds good for a cleanup run. I'll post it in the upcoming
trips.

I finally stayed connected long enough to update the webpage, so take a
look. If anybody has any constructive criticisms on the website, let me
know. I'm thinking of adding a Members Page and probably a guestbook, so
give me some input!

Subject: Mud Springs 2 - Trail Report

Those attending included myself (DougB) w/ trusty trail dog Chip; JeffH
and wife Cindy; and GregC and daughter Lauren. We hit the trail at about
9:30. The intent of the trip (aside from having a great time) was to try
to make it to the end of the trail and see if it hooked up to an old
Jeep trail shown on the Quad, which would lead us back to SR87 in the
vacinity of Camp Creek.

The trip to the class 4 hill was covered in a previous trail report, so
I'll fast forward to the hill. After getting to the top of the hill, we
took a short breather and took in the views....and then were on our way.
The trail immediately after the hill is not too difficult (class 3), but
this was short lived. Soon we reached the fondly named "Last Chance
Boulder Field". This is where the first group, after a fine day of
wheelin, decided to turn around. It was about 11:30, so we stoped for
lunch and surveyed the situation.

The first half of this section is clearly the roughest (strong class
4)...with the hardest part of this at the very beginning...so once you
decide to commit, your commited to the whole thing, since backing out is
not a very viable option. The trail is heading down a moderate grade at
this point, and it was thought (hoped) that coming back up would be
easier on the trip back, if that was necessary.

I was the first one to try it, and immediately upon starting, I got my
right wheels in a gulley, and slide down at a greater angle than I felt
comfortable with...but it didn't roll...just felt like it...and it
really got my attention. Lession - Always check out what's in front of
you before releasing the clutch.

Anyway..the hardest part immediately gives you 2 bad choices. If you go
to the right, you'll be very off camber, and will likely slide down to
the left into a hole and a fairly large rock/boulder. To the left is a
narrow slot between 2 boulders...really too narrow to fit through...but
presents the only way to go...to I manuvered to get the best line, and
had a go of it. Greg was a great spotter (you really shouldn't try these
things w/ out spotting help), and after several attempts I was able to
squeeze through by riding my right front onto the rock(s), and bringing
my left rear over the other ones. Immediately upon exiting this, you
have to make a sharp left and position yourself astride a fairly large
gulley. If you miss shoot it, you'll slide in and likely roll a bit, and
get stuck. Having made this, the rest of the way was, by comparison
fairly easy, though still class 4 stuff.

Jeff and Cindy were the next to go in there Teraflex'd TJ...and they
took the same line I did...w/ Greg and I helping to spot. They squeezed
through just fine, and were out of the field.

Next came Greg and Lauren, in his Pro-Comp'd YJ. A newly installed lift,
which performed well, and paid for itself on this trip. Again, he
followed the same line...and made it just fine.

After having all made it, we all took satisfaction in it... the feeling
being tempered by the thought that we may have to come back this way,
and not really knowing if it would be easier going up than coming down.

We pressed on and fairly soon were upon a steep hill, filled w/ loose
gravel. Not a problem...we all made it, and continued and made it to the
first water tank (on the Quad). After that we came to a hill that was
washed out. It didn't look to bad, but I kept getting high centered on
it. I backed up and tried it several times but kept sliding into the
gulley and getting high centered again. One more try, and I got around
this.

Shortly after this, we took a break and took in some fantastic views.

Moving on, we passed the second tank. This portion of the trail is a
strong class 3. After a bit, we came upon a large wash...as it turned
out, the last wash before the end of the trail. The approach to the wash
was very rocky and rough...so we got out and walked a bit. This part of
the trail didn't look all that well used, but was definately passable,
if you could get into the wash, past the rocks. When we walked back to
the Jeeps, we noticed a discarded and broken axle, and decided it was
time to turn around. It was also getting late, and we wanted to get back
to the trail head by 5:30 or 6:00.

The trip back went fairly quickly, and the "Last Chance" section did
turn out to be easier going up...not much...but easier.

We made it back to the trail head by about 5:15, and I took out the Quad
to check the last waypoint entered on the GPS (Where we turned around),
to see how far we had gotten. As it turned out, we were very close to
the end of the trail, where it "T's" into another trail shown on the
Quad. In looking at this trail, I realized it went through Balentine
Canyon, and figured it to be the Balentine Hiking Trail. I then
remembered that someone had told me that the Mud Springs trail dead ends
at a hiking trail...so there would have been no exit for us if we had
made the very end.

On the way back to town, I swung by the Balentine Trail Head (near Camp
Creek on SR87, and sure nuff, just a hiking trail.

A really great time. Grey and Jeff both took video's and will likely
post some still shots to the group of this most excellent adventure. A
really great time!

A word of caution - this trail is a strong class 4, and should not be
tried w/o a good lift, and an l/s rear or lockers would be advisable.

I'm forwarding this note on the Cherry Creek run, to be sure everyone's
seen it.

Meeting Time: 9a
Meeting Place: Gas station (Texaco?) in Claypool (between Miami
and Globe) on the right hand side, just west of
the intersection of US60 and SR88

So far, those indicating that they would be coming include:
DanM
DanW
LindaL
LenS
MalindaZ
EricC
GregC (maybe)

Please advise if I have these wrong or left someone out.

This is a class 2 trail, w/ some light class 3 through some very scenic
parts of Az. We'll end up in the pines (and cool temps) of the Sierra
Anchas where we'll camp. See the "things to bring" section of the
attached note.

I believe that DanM and EricC will be heading back to town on Sat.

OK - this is planned as an overnight up in the Sierra Anchas, via Cherry
Creek. The trail is relatively easy, and would be fine for stock Jeeps,
w/ good tires (I've done it in a slightly modified Blazer). While Cherry
Creek trail is not particularly challenging, the scenery is amoung the
nicest I've seen in this part of Az...and there are some side trails
that look to be promising for exploration. Cherry Creek will take us up
into the pines, and there are some nice camping spots that'll accomodate
a good size group. We'll be up around 5000 to 6000 feet, so it'll get
cool at night.

Suggested Meeting Place: Gas station just west of the intersection of
US60 and SR 88, between Miami and Globe. Sorry, but I can't remember
what type of station it is. It's on the right (south) side of US60.
(look for a white TJ - I'll try to get there early). We can tank up
there. Those w/ an extra Jerry Can may want to bring it, though it's
probably not necessary. It'll take us the better part of a day to get to
the top.

Suggested Meeting time: How's 9a sound??

Things to bring: Water(always); food; fire wood; warm clothes; stove, if
you have it; trash bags; and general camping stuff.

While it's still a bit early, those planning to go, please post a note,
so we can keep track of how many are interested.

Thanks

Great report Doug, sounds like fun!

Have some questions: What do you think of the ARBs so far, did they help? Do
you think 33 inch tires would have been substantially better than the 32's?
Did your Jeep develop any more "character" along the way?

Jeff and Cindy, what lift/tires/lockers do you have on your TJ? Was it enough?

And last, any possible camping areas found along the way?

And, yes, your humble moderator is contemplating what to do with his tax
refund...

Looks like we got a quite few new members over the last couple of months; we
are up to 74! Welcome!

We have people with all levels of experience. Some of you may never have taken
your Jeep off-road and you're looking for a fairly easy trail to get your feet
wet. There are good trails out there for this. Some of you may be bored with
anything less than Class 4. Good trails for that too.

Some of you are more interested in hunting down remote ghost towns, or perhaps
rockhounding, or camping in remote areas. A lot of us have these interests
too.

So drop us a line and tell us where you are located and what kind of trail
runs you want to try, and what kind of Jeep you have. If you want to try a
particular trail, post it and a proposed date. Our trail runs typically have
from 2 to 10 Jeeps involved (and more people). The longer the advanced notice,
the more people tend to come. Family and pets are welcome too.

We typically do 1 or 2 major runs a month, and sometimes several smaller
wildcat runs someone may think up on short notice. So if Thursday you have a
hankerin' to go four wheeling, post a note and you'll probably get a few to
come with you. We have been labeled as "The Wildcat Bunch". We highly
recommend you don't go out on trails alone.

Check out our archives at:

You will find past trail reports and upcoming plans.

Be sure to check out our web site at:

ARB's were great, though I ran most of it w/ them off, only using the
rear on challenging spots and both front and rear only about twice,
though I probably didn't need the front. Really like being able to turn
'em off when not needed, especially on loose off camber spots, where
a locker can slide you down. Even w/ an open diff, the TJ (esp. w/ the
TeraFlex lift) does surprisingly well. Wheels stay on the ground.

The 32's did just fine. 33's would have been better, but not by much.
I only hit the Tomkin 2 or 3 times, and not very hard. Scraped the rims
up a little bit though...and repositioned some wheel weights.

As to camping spots, there are some sites for a small group. There's
also supposed to be a camping spot at the end of the trail, which we
didn't quite make.

There are four coves, and the trails to them get progressively more
challenging. There are some Class 2.5-3 moguls just inside the gate (I suspect
these were dug by someone to keep the riff raff out). Then there is a Class 3
hill climb and a descent to the first cove. Beyond that the hill climbs get a
little harder, finally to Class 4 leading to the fourth cove.

I haven't been to all coves, but I did notice that the fourth cove had the
most garbage in it. The trails leading to and from the coves are relatively
clean, mostly Toyota, Nissan and Chevy parts... ;-)

I have more descriptions and some pictures at my web site.

It's a 2-3, but there are some fun hills that are probably a 3+ to a
light 4, but you don't need to do these, unless the spirit moves you.

Karen,

I see you are planning a trip to Southern Arizona. Well, my friend and I live here in sunny Tucson. We always make time to go riding. There are several trails in the Tucson valley and between all the way to the Bisbee area. If you are interested in a list, you can email me back and I will send you a list. Also, if you would like to contact us once you get here, just say so, I will email you a phone number you may call once you get to town. I am happy to show you some trails to go on once you are here.

Check out this web site. It is compiled of Trips that My friend Jeffrey and I have taken over the past few months. All of the trails/pics listed here are in Arizona (primarily So. AZ - with the exception of Sedona) the web address is... http://www.azstarnet.com/~jeffrey go take a look at it. and get back to us. Hopefully we can be of assistance.

I'd like to add my $.02

32's worked great, when I up grade my tires it will be to 32's
Very impressed with how doug's locker's worked, you can really see
the difference on the video we took.

Jeff's TJ did great with the new MT 32's, LSD's front & rear, and
his new lift installed. Watching the video you would think that Jeff's
TJ was locked also, I thought the LSD worked real well.
Both Doug and Jeff have lots of flex. The 32's fit just right, if they
would have had 33's on the tires would have been all all up in there
finders. The 32's tucked in just right.

In all the trip was awsome, some great 4wheeling, and that's my $.02

I'm up for the 24th. I could use some better directions, as well.

Along with your list I mentioned

* China Peak (East of Tombstone also called China Camp)
* Juniper Flats just north of Bisbee.

Both are easy trails but a very scenic.

The AZ Lo-Rangers is planning a trip on a very challenging trail along the US-Mexico border sometime before the end of the year. Not sure where it is, but it is somewhere near Douglas -- I think. I'll keep the list posted. This will probably be an overnighter.

OK. The concensus appears to be for April 24. So.....

When: April 24 at 9a

Where: Butcher Jones Park

Directions: Butcher Jones is off the Bush Highway. For those from the
east valley, the easiest way to go would likely be north on Power Road,
which turns into Bush Highway at Red Mountain. It'll turn to the
east...keep going, and the road will eventually turn to the north.
You'll pass Suhwaro Ranch and some other sites...and on your right
there'll be a sign for Butcher Jones Park. Go to the parking area, where
we'll assemble. Don't worry about paying a fee at the fee station...it's
not needed for what we're doing.
For those from elsewhere in the valley, the easiest way is to take SR87
north to Bush Highway (north/east of Ft. McDowell). Turn right. and
Butcher Jones will be a couple of miles on your left.

What to bring: Trash bags, gloves, water and lunch.

Other stuff: I've spoken w/ the Forest Service, and we can leave what we
collect in the dumpsters at the park, and they will remove. Depending on
the number of people participating, we'll probably break into groups,
with certain areas to cover, and we could choose a place (one of the
Coves) to assemble for lunch. I'll have maps made up for everyone. I've
cc'd Ken Wadill (of ASA4WDC)...perhaps there may be others would like to
participate from the assn. More the better for this type of thing.

Forest Service: They'd like a letter specifying what we want to do, so
I'll mail them a hard copy of this note. They may want us all to sign
releases...I'll see if we can minimize the paper work.

Publicity: I know some reporters, so I could try to get them some info
on this.

LindaL...you may have been involved in something like this before...any
thoughts or suggestions? Also, would some of the other clubs you belong
to want to participate???

Should be a lot of fun, and will do some good also. This type of event
helps 4WD clubs develop credibility that can be used to keep trails
open...so then more people we can get involved, the more we'll be able
to clean up (the area's been pretty well trashed - esp. the Coves).

Hi Karen, (or please foreward this to her)

I was on the China Camp trail two weeks ago.
This is a VERY scenic trail! A stock Jeep
can run this just fine. I would be happy
to lead a group out there! Let me know as
you get closer to your plans.

Linda, I went beyond the China camp, taking the
road with a LOT of switch backs, do you
know where this road leads to or ends?
It did not seem suitable for a stock Jeep.
