Subject: Mud Springs and other things
Been thinkin of heading back out to Mud Springs this weekend. It's a
class 4 trail which AzVJC has done before, but I'd like to try to get as
far down the trail as possible, to see if it hooks up to a Jeep trail
shown on the Quad map. Last run we did, we got to the top of the class 4
hill, just after the spring, and turned around and headed out. After the
class 4 hill, the trail is strewn w/ some large rocks for a bit, so
going will be slow, and then there are some hills that look fun (have
only hiked to them so far).
Anybody up for this?
Lift, and an l/s are strongly recommended.
Also, as to a Coves/Rolls clean up, I've been in touch w/ the Forest
Service and w/ ASA. I'll advise when more details are known.
As for the Cherry Creek overnight on March 20, I'll post a note w/ more
details for this run.

OK - this is planned as an overnight up in the Sierra Anchas, via Cherry
Creek. The trail is relatively easy, and would be fine for stock Jeeps,
w/ good tires (I've done it in a slightly modified Blazer). While Cherry
Creek trail is not particularly challenging, the scenery is amoung the
nicest I've seen in this part of Az...and there are some side trails
that look to be promising for exploration. Cherry Creek will take us up
into the pines, and there are some nice camping spots that'll accomodate
a good size group. We'll be up around 5000 to 6000 feet, so it'll get
cool at night.
Suggested Meeting Place: Gas station just west of the intersection of
US60 and SR 88, between Miami and Globe. Sorry, but I can't remember
what type of station it is. It's on the right (south) side of US60.
(look for a white TJ - I'll try to get there early). We can tank up
there. Those w/ an extra Jerry Can may want to bring it, though it's
probably not necessary. It'll take us the better part of a day to get to
the top.
Suggested Meeting time: How's 9a sound??
Things to bring: Water(always); food; fire wood; warm clothes; stove, if
you have it; trash bags; and general camping stuff.
While it's still a bit early, those planning to go, please post a note,
so we can keep track of how many are interested.
Thanks

I'm in.
Also, I'll volunteer again to carry any extra equipment anyone wants to take
along that won't fit. If you're thinking of leaving out passengers so you
can carry camping gear, let me know. I have plenty of room........

needs to make their ride more comfortable and stow some stuff with me for the

Sure...My guess is that we'll hit the top by late afternoon (5 ish). The
road back to SR 88 is dirt, but in very good condition (class 1)...can't
get lost, even in the dark. It does have some spectacular views of it's
own. You'll get back to Phoenix late, but it's certainly do-able.

Nothing like wasting bandwidth and slowing the Net down. Check out what
is pasted below the original poem. I submitted this to the American
Cancer Society, and they have a section called "inquiry about chain
emails", or something to that effect. They obviously didn't put that
catagory in without a reason. Also got no listing on a reverse phone
lookup for that number. Nice sentiment, though. Hope it doesn't crash
any medical servers.

A friend of mine who runs another list (and who actually has a serious
life threatening illness) sent this to me. When I recieved it, I
thought I'd share
it with az-vjc, seeing as how I got the above through it. I'd be more
than willing
to share her webpage, but I don't want to swamp her. Ask, and I'll
provide (she's an extremely nice person).

This was sent to me today, and I feel it's an excellent resource for
many people - it gives you a response to those who might send you the
"good times" or "Hi, my name is Dave Rhodes" messages.
---- quoted message follows ---
Every now and then these things crop up. As a public service, I will
once again post this informational message. The contributor wishes

WARNING, CAUTION, DANGER, AND BEWARE!
Gullibility Virus Spreading over the Internet!
************************************************** **********
WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Institute for the Investigation of
Irregular Internet Phenomena announced today that many Internet
users are becoming infected by a new virus that causes them to
believe without question every groundless story, legend, and dire
warning that shows up in their inbox or on their browser. The
Gullibility Virus, as it is called, apparently makes people believe and
forward copies of silly hoaxes relating to cookie recipes, email
viruses, taxes on modems, and get-rich-quick schemes.
"These are not just readers of tabloids or people who buy lottery
tickets based on fortune cookie numbers", a spokesman said. "Most
are otherwise normal people, who would laugh at the same stories if
told to them by a stranger on a street corner". However, once these
same people become infected with the Gullibility Virus, they believe
anything they read on the Internet.
"My immunity to tall tales and bizarre claims is all gone", reported
one weeping victim. "I believe every warning message and sick child
story my friends forward to me, even though most of the messages
are anonymous."
Another victim, now in remission, added, "When I first heard about
Good Times, I just accepted it without question. After all, there
were dozens of other recipients on the mail header, so I thought the
virus must be true". It was a long time, the victim said, before she
could stand up at a Hoaxees Anonymous meeting and state, "My name
is Jane, and I've been hoaxed". Now, however, she is spreading the
word. "Challenge and check whatever you read," she says.
Internet users are urged to examine themselves for symptoms of the
virus, which include the following:
* The willingness to believe improbable stories without thinking.
* The urge to forward multiple copies of such stories to others.
* A lack of desire to take three minutes to check to see if a
story is true.
T. C. is an example of someone recently infected. He told one
reporter, "I read on the Net that the major ingredient in almost all
shampoos makes your hair fall out, so I've stopped using shampoo".
When told about the Gullibility Virus, T. C. said he would stop
reading email, so that he would not become infected.
Anyone with symptoms like these is urged to seek help immediately.
Experts recommend that at the first feelings of gullibility, Internet
users rush to their favorite search engine and look up the item
tempting them to thoughtless credence. Most hoaxes, legends, and
tall tales have been widely discussed and exposed by the Internet
community.
Courses in critical thinking are also widely available, and there is
online help from many sources, including

Those people who are still symptom free can help inoculate them-
selves against the Gullibility Virus by reading some good material on
evaluating sources, such as

It *is* possible to design responsible alerts for people to circulate
on the Internet. Here is a how-to that draws positive conclusions
from long experience with the evils of badly designed alerts:
Designing Effective Action Alerts for the Internet at
http://weber.ucsd.edu/~pagre/alerts.html
Lastly, as a public service, Internet users can help stamp out the
Gullibility Virus by sending copies of this message to anyone who
forwards them a hoax.

Thanks

I'm not real interested in the overnight part, but would like to make a day
trip out of it. Do you think that would work out ok?

Subject: [az_vjc] Cherry Creek - March 20
Thanks
DougB

Lastly, as a public service, Internet users can help stamp out the
Gullibility Virus by sending copies of this message to anyone who
forwards them a hoax.

This message is so important, we're sending it anonymously! Forward
it to all your friends right away! Don't think about it! This is not a
chain letter! This story is true! Don't check it out! This story is
so
timely, there is no date on it! This story is so important, we're using
lots of exclamation points! Lots!! For every message you forward to
some unsuspecting person, the Home for the Hopelessly Gullible will
donate ten cents to itself. (If you wonder how the Home will know
you are forwarding these messages all over creation, you're
obviously thinking too much.)

I'm in! That will be the last trip I can make until mid-May, so I don't want
to miss it. Thanks Doug.
