View Full Version : Can It Really Make You Go Blind???

So, we just got home from a fun filled 5 hours at the local emergency room...
When I got home from work today, ben was on the couch and said he felt like he was coming down with something, but that it was mostly a headache coming from the area of his right eye....his eye felt swollen and kept watering....then I noticed it looked funny....and really red....
He has 20/15 vision and so we decided to go to the emergency room when he covered his left eye and couldn't see anything but a big blur out of his right eye. Now all we know is that he doesn't have glaucoma (no pot for ben), and he doesn't have a detached retna....We have to go for an appt with an opthamalogist (sp) tomorrow.....
He says if he goes blind he's selling the jeep....I say he's just gonna have to be a maid and daddy daycare :D
His dad always said he was amazed ben didn't go blind from his high school extra curriculars (family site edidted)...maybe it has latent effects

Well, they could tell it wasn't a detached retna....it is not a tumor....not a bleeding hemmorhage (sp)....and due to a freakish test where they took something that looked like a rubber condom protected ladies toy and bounced it on his bare eyeball to get eye pressure - he does not have an acute onset of glaucoma --- they just said they had no clue and he has to see this Winkler guy today (the fonze??). It is his aiming eye for firing a weapon so this is very serious....
I so tired....
The jeep - this just gives me more driving time!! :D

Thanks for the jokes, guys....I know he is nervous, because he always jokes more when he is nervous or scared....He has been like a regular stand up comedian the past 12 hours....He said that if this is due to touchey selfey he's going to have to have some time alone, because he wants to get all the bang for his buck if he's going blind! LOL

I'm going to kill the doctor...his discharge papers say to "have head and neck rubbed" for his headache symptoms....this is malarky!!!

seems like they would take some x-rays and see whats going on. Did they at least do that?
I had it happen to me once before with almost the same symptoms, my left eye turned red and started to swell shut. It was due to a really bad sinus infection behind my eye. DR put me on some antibiotics and in about a week things were back to normal

Cat scan, ladies toy bouncing on the bare eyeball test...., bright light to look in the eye....that's all.
They said no antibiotics till they get to the doc.

One time I was driving to San Diego in my pickup (NO A/C) and we were close to Ocotillo and my eye burned..Look at the rear view and it was bright red with Green discharge...YUK. Pulled over and cleaned it..used some visene..all better..just a odd experience:o
***EDIT*** Did I mention it was 115*

Well, we saw Dr. Wooten of Swagel Wooten Eye Centers.....
He has Pars Planitis, which she herself has only seen in a half dozen patients in her career. It apparently is an inflamation - not an infection - caused by at this time unknown factors whose effect on the eye is a swelling and pain behind the cornea area. He has to go to another specialist on Thursday....
No driving or work....neck rubs to help with the head aches (darned doctors are evil)...
I get to drive the jeep to work! :D I'll have to drive him to the doc on Thursday too.
I think we're going to farrellis tonight to see Next so he can be consoled with his favorite place on earth. (movie theater with full dinner menu and even alcoholic beverages www.cinemasupperclub.com )

I'd like to get pics but he's still a bit butt-hurt...between his mother and I we've been hitting him with one-liners all day....and then his depth perception is shot along with vision so he has to be chauffered....He couldn't really help wrench with Yelacon because he kept hitting his head on stuff due to the lack of sight....He's really sad about it. I'm driving the jeep all week and leaving him the crown victoria - at least if he drives and totals that in an emergency where he has to leave the house he'll be safer in the crash and he won't total the Jeep.
Will get on the pics....Remi has a jack sparrow costume.........

I think I know what caused this..
It was your white pale legs from Sunday..
but seriously I hope it all goes well Thursday and they say it is something like a small dirt spec somewhere.....
amber.hodge
06-12-2007, 11:58 PM
If that would cause him eye problems, he would have experienced them 2 years ago! :D

true
amber.hodge
06-14-2007, 11:45 PM
Well, after the docs today, they still cannot say what is causing it because they don't know, but he has 2 things:
Pars Planitis (swelling of eyeball behind cornea due to unknown causes making the vision go down to around 10% in that eye) - this is in right eye only
UVitis (ocular pain from light) - both eyes
Originally, we were told that it would take about a month to get vision back....today they dropped the other shoe and let us know it could take up to 2 years to never for it to be better. He is not allowed to work, drive a commercial or military vehicle, and can only drive a civilian vehicle in dire emergencies.....which I don't like the idea of since he cannot even walk from one end of the house to the other without clotheslining himself on a corner or a cabinet or the couch.....
Needless to say, I will be getting out the creeper, going to napa or checker and changing the oil myself tomorrow to avoid him needing stitches for banging his head on something....he's having a hard time with this and pushing himself too hard to do things....

This totaly blows.. I am so sorry that this has happened..
just keep hoping for something to change and it was just a piece of some sort of debris in his eye...
amber.hodge
06-15-2007, 12:08 AM
The debris is out....out as in there wasn't any....they looked with super bright lights and the optical magnifying glass 4 separate occasions.....dialated his pupils 2 separate days, did eye test upon eye test...even gave him a Cat Scan....cultures...etc...
I'm just praying it will leave as quickly as it came and quick. If he is disabled permanently, we'll just sell the car, and he'll stay home with the boy and I'll have to manage to work full time and cook and clean....not much different than my current responsibilities. :) He'll still be hot to me, even if the metro short bus picks him up at the door to go places!

Crap, that really sucks! I hope he gets better soon.
amber.hodge
06-15-2007, 10:12 AM
We do too.....I told him if he's permanently this way and gets discharged from the Army he can just get all the equipment he needs and since the one eye works fine, he can adapt and go into the fabrication business...

I hope everything works out but don't get too freaked out just yet. I know of 2 people who are basically blind in one eye and still drive. Takes a while to get used to depth.
Besides, no one is writing his off just yet :)

Im blind in one eye....I still drive, draw, and shoot (very well) its NOT the end of the world..it just sucks..:D
amber.hodge
06-15-2007, 12:41 PM
;) the depth is the problem.....that's why he keeps running into things. :) I think we'll wait until he stops running into things on foot for him to get behind the wheel.

Didjoo get my PM...?
amber.hodge
06-15-2007, 12:49 PM
Got it - :) thanks - responded.
Ben says we can only do night runs until I get more experience or the UVitis goes away......it hurts his eyes for daytime light exposure, plus he can see out of the left eye better at night and would be less likely to have a nervous breakdown while I'm driving! :D

Ben... I am gonna have Amber stop by my work tomorrow to pick up my side arm for you to take to your buddy... and maybe some weekend to blow off steam blow through a few hundred rounds.. I will se if my brother in law would like to go and bring his damn new 20 weapons.

????? Ben never reads this unless I'm home - now that he's half blind he REALLY never reads this board.... I'll let him know you wanted him to tell me to do that. I'm lost as to which buddy.....I don't see any of them carrying safely if it is one of the pre-marriage buddies.....He was the only non-retard in his whole group.....
