With satellite radio, are XM & Sirius the only options? Do you have to subscribe to be able to pick up any stations? $13 a month isn't to bad but free is better. Wanting to install something in the old Jeep, but regular radio has limited reception. Also considering just an MP3 player, just looking for something small that can be easily removed ( by me ).
Thanks

actually they supposedly are merging now. We have sirrus in the commander and an XM box in the LJ, works out good when wheeling and you want tunes, box canyon and similar areas play havoc on it tho.

But yes, to my knowledge they are the oly ones and one option is to buy a year or more at a time, that will get you a decent discount

There are merger talks but the govt has to approve/prevent a monopoly first. XM went offline for a few days not long ago - not sure what that was about. I've got Sirius and love it.

I think it's funny when people say they won't pay for radio when they have no problem paying for TV  By that logic, they should still be using dog ears.

Yea, so what happened to "commercial-free" satellite radio too? XM sure does seem to be putting more commercials on air recently.....

Both of them do, XM more than Sirrus but they are both running them

Don't know anything about that, it hasn't been out up here in Denver. I have it in the truck and in the house and listen everyday. I haven't had it not work in the 2 years I've been a subscriber.

Looks like it was for just one day...

We have Sirius in our Commander and the Wrangler, it was initially free for a year for each of them, included all the channels.

ANYWAY, my wife got a coupon in the mail last month. 3 months for 12.95. She called in and they honored it for each vehicle.

I have had both Sirius and XM, and I like Sirius much better as far as channel selection for the music I listen to, customer service, and I think they have been better at signing new customers over the years with their market strategies. I think the more people they have the better it is for everybody and last time I heard, sirius has a landslide lead in the market.

I have XM in both vehicles...my jeep has a Roadie2 and my wifes car has a SkyFi. I haven't heard a commercial or any dumb arse "morning jocks" and those idiotic laugh tracks in the 2 years I have had XM.
I listen to Deep Tracks, XCountry and The Loft most of the time with Deep Tracks getting 80% of the airtime. I absolutely love XM!

I have sirrius and I love it. I have the portable unit so I can transfer it between vehicles. I use it for long drives for work and when I am out in no mans land in the jeep. it has always worked great.

I have xm on my DTV and did have sirius in my Jeep. I need to add a new head unit to the Jeep as the portable ones only last a year.

I've been using my Sportster (portable) between my CJ, ZJ and the boom box for over 2 years now and it's fine. Maybe I misunderstood?

Matt, I have had bad luck with the portable sat radios..I'm on my 2nd one in 2 years...Maybe too much dust or vibration??? I bought the last one new from ebay, its the size of a pda and its broke too. I was thinking a head unit would be the best way?

Hard to say. You wheel more than me so maybe I just haven't abused mine as much as you do :) Or maybe flaws with individual units? The Sportster is the only one I've ever owned so I can't compare.

I think a built in unit would be better, but I like the ability to transfer the portable between vehicles and the house - and because I'm too cheap to buy one for each car :)
