View Full Version : gas leak at cap, ideas?

Still trying to finish up the fuel system work on the CJ - I finally added the liquid check valve, ran a line from it to the emissions canister, and fixed the fuel return setup (previously the fuel return line was hooked up to the canister!). Previously I'd also replaced the fuel filler neck & filler/vent hoses.

What should have been the simplest part of the job is proving the be the most vexing. I put a new gas cap on, then noticed fuel smells coming out of the Jeep while driving it around - discovered the cap had allowed some gas to leak out. I've now tried 3 different caps (Stant locking & non-locking, and a different brand locking one from AutoZone). All of them leak, despite the latest new one being such a tight fit that I have to use my full strength to get it clicked into place.

Ideas? Is it possible my fuel system is overpressurized? If so, how do I diagnose and fix? I'm about ready to take it to a shop, 'cause I don't know what else to do.

Thanks,
Jeff

I made a special gas cap with a valve stem in it to pressurize the system on mine. It should work to see if it has too much pressure also.
