Amber and Ben got their Jeep stuck in the middle of the Gila River while running Battleaxe today. Ben just called me for help and I need to round up a few others to assist with the recovery. If anyone has a trailer they may need it to get the Jeep home to Queen Creek.
I'll be making some calls but please post up here if you can help.
TIA
Matt

All I know is they were trying to cross from south to north and got stuck on the south side, so we're goin in Florence-Kelvin Highway to meet Ben who will guide us back.
I recall it's pretty sandy between the graded highway and the river so I think 4wd would be required.
I guess we should wait on a trailer until we know what the situation is when we get him out. If needed we can tow him into Florence and call for a trailer then.

I thought battleaxe was a pretty easy trail, I think its an alternate way into the coke ovens. It sounds like they were playing around in the river area and got stuck
good luck with the recovery, be sure to bring a camera!

I just spoke with Mike77CJ5 on the phone. The recovery group just left Florence towards Cochran. They have 3 or 4 Jeeps and properly equipped. There is a truck and trailer already en-route. Cell phone reception started breaking up but he said they probably have enough help but extended the invitation to anyone else. And I just checked the water flow for the Gila and is around 500cfs - that's a LOT of water and much higher than the normal avg flow for this time of year.

USGS waterdata reports 519cfs at the moment and long-term median flow for this date is 347cfs. Not sure what the overall avg flow for the Gila is but I certainly don't think it is more than 350 or so. Check out the USGS info here: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/current/?type=flow

Hey Jamie, my avatar pic was taken on the road to Cochran. Great scenery out there, but not so much at night. :D I am in east Mesa and was ready to go but it sounded like they were good to go plus AzCharlie had just called them, and he is very close and RokNRich is just as close and is en-route. Give someone a call in the recovery group for specifics on location. I don't want to say any more than I have here already.

Yes Jamie. I don't know how or where they measure the depth so I don't go by that info really. If 4 feet is the measurement then there are places that are probably 6 to 8 feet deep along with places that are only 1 or 2 feet deep. I just know from numerous trips there what it looks like at various flows and I would not try to cross at the spot I know if it was over 300cfs.

Sounds like we need to plan a scenic trip out that way. Not really difficult but fun and lots of places for pics. My uncle owns some property out there and I have done quite a bit of exploring the area. I'll start thinking of a good route to take. But now I'll stop hijacking this thread. :) I do hope they get out of this ok. I love how this group comes together to help when needed!

who knows what they were thinking... maybe it was shallow then all of a sudden got deep on them....
Wind_Danzer

I'm gonna guess they were crossing in a shallow area but the force of the water pushed them into deeper water off what would be the traditional crossing line.

Big thanks to all who came out and all who offered.
I just got back home. The recovery went well. In fact we timed it perfect as the sun was just setting and it was very cool down by the river :)
I only got a few shots as I was busy winching but I know others got some too.
The Jeep was about 50 yards downstream of where he entered and up to the hood. While they may have some drying to do, they may have dodged a bullet as the dash never submerged and water may not have made it into the intake. We trailered them home as it was getting to dark to try and do any work on it there. Best left to daylight with proper tools/location.
Here are the only pics I took. First two as we found it. The last during the winching.

I had my wench on for one day, and it when fishing.
Simple extraction considering the current.

The current carried them down from where they entered.
The dome light came on when he put the key in to unlock the steering for the pull. Ben disconnected the battery cables once he was on dry land just to be sure nothing shorted out. He'll reattach them after he's had a chance to drail all the fluids from the engine, tranny, tcase, diffs, etc. and pulls the plugs and cranks it over to be sure nothing in the cylinders.

Right on guys! Great job bringing them out of there. If I had seen the post sooner I would have been there. As it was, I would have arrived as they were coming out. Glad everyone is ok. That must have been a scary ride. Good luck drying it out - you probably sucked water into the engine but the good news is that it's a Jeep and the humidity here is about 9%! It will dry fast and once you change all your fluids it will fire right up and wheel again. There are lessons to be learned here, but I will not even address that. I will however make some pop corn and watch this thread tomorrow. :)
I have to say it again: I love how this group comes together to help someone in need. Great job.

First off, thank you, grassyass, and way to go!!!!
We were humbled by the support we were given by the members of VJC...many of whom had never even met us. We were even more humbled to come home and read the 5 pages of support given by VJC members....
JOE WEST: I mentioned this on the trail, but I believe you need to make a new sticker that says "VJC vehicle recovery team" for the members who go out and do this on a day off, during work or whenever for total strangers that just happen to be jeepers....amazing.
Well, we opted to take the jeep to our apt, so we can wrench on it on our own schedule and not impose on anyone else - thank you so much for the offer though, Mike 77 CJ....! .........John, thanks for the ride home and the tow!!!! EVERYONE ELSE: (I'm too tired to recall all and don't want to risk leaving someone out)...you were all an amazing help and are great people to know.
Okay, for the back story everyone is wanting to hear about...................
We decided to run the FJ area, as you all know......
The trail guide said that the place we tried to ford the river was the only crossing....and as it turns out is the only legal one....there were people wading in the crossing area...I almost jumped out and waded in front of the jeep to make sure I was being a good spotter....
Ben looked at me and said "Wanna???"
I looked at Ben and said "(expletive) YEAH!!!"
Remi was in the back seat with the dog...I got back in the jeep (dumb me)...next thing I know, the jeep is some reenactment of "the Oregon Trail" gone wrong where they forgot to caulk the sides of the wagon......water is coming in the doors, my son is out of his seat, clinging to my headrest screaming "I HATE 4WHEELING - WE'RE GOING TO DIE! WE'RE GOING TO DIE!! IM NEVER GOING 4WHEELING AGAIN MAMA!!!!" Ben and I were saying expletives my son shouldn't have heard....the dog was freaking...then the jeep stopped....water up to the ashtrays...
People across the river could not get us pulled out with a chain and their truck....Ben took remi across the river, but I stayed in the jeep with the dog for 45 min, because she can't swim and the current was too strong/deep for me to take her...
Ben left with the man to drive for cell signal to call VJC for help....Got the dog and I to shore but not before a band of drunken 18 year olds stopped and laughed at me and took camera phone pictures....
Then the VJC arrived and all was well in the universe.....Wrenching shall commence tomorrow!!!

Good News, everyone is OK... With proper explanations of what you learned IE: what went wrong, and now that you have learned something new, you will not let that happen to yourselves, OR to him again, Remi will get over it in time.
Not much different than dealing with the bugs in his walls. Keep the explanations simple, and on his level. Why not make it his job to help you by asking him to let you know when he feels uncomfortable, before you try/do something. Then you will know what you need to do to help work him through it, and he will in turn learn that many things he's afraid of, are not as bad as they could be.
As for the tin...the Jeep can be made "good-as-new" with some replacement fluids, a bit of good old fashioned scrubbing, and some time to dry out...
Couple areas to add to the list of things to clean, as I'm sure many of your helpers will remember the vital under-hood and gearbox fluids, etc...;
- Take a garden hose and flush out the alternator, to get as much of the grit/silt from that dirty water out as is practical.
- Remove the dust shield from the clutch housing and do the same to that area also.
- Using the hose, also flush the many underbody floor stringers and supports out, to remove the accumulated grit and silt that would otherwise linger and hold moisture for a LONG time (leading to eventual rusting... yes, even here in the desert...)
- Add a can of "heet" or similar fuel line dry (also known as fuel de-icer in cold country) to the fuel to help absorb/dry any moisture that may have seeped into the fuel system. If you can't locate some over-the-counter fuel system drier, use approx 4-6 oz of de-natured alcohol (any hardware store will carry it), then top off the tank ASAPractical.
- In the interior, remove EVERYTHING that got wet, and wash it down REAL good to remove as much of the dirty water as practical, then do a final rinse with a solution of 3-5 gal water for each capful of household bleach, and/or make up a weak lysol/pinesol or similar solution (to kill the "grungies" that will begin to make it smell skunky after a few days...:( )
PS: If the seats are wet, remove the covers. It's a simple matter to unbolt the seats & remove the covers, then soak and squeeze the foam in clear water to get the "skunky" water out, then squeeze as much as practical out and let em dry for a minimum of 8-12 hours, or over-night if you can... same for any carpeting...(don't bother asking how I know this...:p  :D )
When you put the seats back in, re-lube the slides with a light smear of white or lithium grease, then hang one of them small carboard type air freshners under the seat, to help with the aroma control... :D
I'm sure many others will have thoughts and experiences to share as well...
Once again, glad to hear that other than a bit of ego bruising, no one was physically injured...;)

Oh man! The biscuits and gravy are gooooood! :)
So far, we have drained all but tranny and t-case. Water got into everything. Pulled the oil plug and a solid stream of clear water flowed for a good 10 seconds - more than a gallon! Both diffs had water and 4 of 6 plugs came out wet. Plug wires were nearly sealed on - probably the originals and need replacing anyways. We have opened all electrical connectors under the hood as well as fuse box and distributor cap and drying now. Ben and Kevin have gone to the parts store but we need one more question answered:
What fluids (and how much) or parts do we need for the manual tranny and t-case?
offroadaz
05-29-2007, 11:23 AM
I would take it in and have the tranny flushed. Costs around $110 to have it done. A friend had his fill up with water and even after draining it and sucking fluids out with a shop vac we still couldnt get all the water out.

Alright, decision has been made to flush the system.
SavageSun4x4

Alright, decision has been made to flush the system.
Pick up a six pack of WD 40 and of course you KNOW what the WD stands for, YES?...WATER DISPLACING.
1) Stick that red nozzle in everything you can find and squirt LIBERALLY. This is especially true of all electrical connections and inside you cylinders where you pulled your plugs.
Do this immediately if not sooner to get the water out and prevent corrosion.
2) Next and now comes the expensive part, get you Jeep on as flat a surface as you can find. Buy 5 oil drain pans, open up your drains for axles, TC, tranny, engine. Let drain for several hours, turn over your engine several times, it won't hurt it!
3) Repeat step 1) Be sure to inspect your PS pump for water/foam/white gooey stuff in it.
4) Along about noon or so replace the drain plugs and fill each with the proper amount of fluids. Find this info in the back of your owners manual or drop a note here and I or someone will send it to you ASAP. Now here comes the expensive part [assuming all else is ok]. REPEAT this step at about 100 miles or one week, which ever comes first.
5) Replace all the plugs, be sure that you shot WD 40 into the plugs to push out the water and dry them off. Hook up everything properly, battery, plug wires etc. DO NOT turn on key or attempt to start until you complete step 6).
6) Gather as many JEEP OWNERS as you have on site in front of your Jeep. Sink to your knees and ask, no, beg the Jeep GODS to shine favorably upon you and your Jeep and tell it you will never do it again.
7) Climb in Jeep, everyone hold hands and turn the key to the start position. Good chances are it will start and run fine forever more [assuming your engine was at IDLE when it ingested water].
8) If engine starts and makes a noise like someone is beating on a metal tub with a hammer...kill engine to mitigate further damage. Chances are you have broken a rod, bad news, good news, everything else should be ok.
This should work and take up no much more than this morning. How do I know it will work? Just ask! Your lucky, you could at least see you Jeep in the river, I had to dive down to find mine. I was crossing a river and suddenly I just dropped off into the abyss. We pulled it out, performed the steps above right at rivers edge, it started up, drove back, never had a problem with the electrical or any component of the driveline.
I am carless today or I would come over...

Re the Boy and the Dog.
Similar but different story. Boating. Freind and I owned a ski boat. His son's first trip was the first of the season when he was about 8. He could swim but not very well.
For the first time in 10 years I forgot the plug. Engine stalls at idle while sitting int the water and water is coming over the housing for the engine (I/O). Kid was already in a life vest and we were near shore but he was plenty scared. Got the bildge pump on and jumped in the water to put the plug in. Dropped it. Got spare plug in a swam to shore. Got the boat out let it drain and went out on the lake.
To keep the story short, it took time but he got over his fear. He did learn how to swim well at home, put the plug in the boat right before we left each time, and became a good skier and wake boarder.
Not only that but he is an A-10 pilot learning how to land on aircraft carrieres now.
We didn't press him but in time his friends wanted to ski and that go things started.
Good luck.

I wouldnt put any ATF in there at all. Just the recommended 10w30 synthetic.
Then change it again!!!!.
ATF belongs in the tcase only.

I just got home, I have to run in to work. However, Amber and Ben's Jeep was purring like it was new when I left there. Both diffs serviced, cylinders cleared (fun to watch, too - wish we had a video cam for the water cannon show), new distributor cap, plugs and wires and oil pan drained all morning. Lots of WD40 on elec. connects, in cylinders and any other place we could use it (thanks Don). And thanks for all the advice from everyone! Still need to address the tranny and t-case but Ben will handle that. Work calls now. I'm glad to see that thing running and running well. I'm sure Amber will follow up with details and further progress. Brad and Kevin, nice to see you guys again and thanks for joining in.

I believe the fill on the T case is on the back. I believe the transmisson bolt on mine was a 33mm socket. I dont know why it was metric. The electrical might have fryed the radio and possibly other things the. Even if it didnt get soaked. I am pretty goood with electrical but I work all night.

The PS pump, transmission and the Tcase were the some of the hardest things to get water out of for me. Make sure to replace the brake fluid too, just in case.
The other thing I had a problem with was, sand getting in the cooling fins of the radiator. I am not sure how so much got in them, but it was a PITA to clean out.

I got most of the electrical issues fixed.. all is left is the brake lights... they blew both bulbs... but the electrical junction block under the driver side dash behind the DLC is badly coroded..
I ran out of time working on it.. I was there till 10:30 I just got home..
THe brake light issue lies with in the junction block... or the brake light switch..
but the 3rd brake light works. but that runs on its own circuit.. so it actually could be the switch... BEN GO BUY A BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH
