View Full Version : Splicing different gauge wires together? Bad??

Hey all...got a question for your electrical gurus.
I am installing a ViAir compressor in the rear of my TJ. The kit comes with 12GA wire to power the compressor, but since I am wiring it so far from the battery, it is suggested I use a minimum of 8GA wire.
I have 6GA THWM wire I picked up from Ace Harware...but I will need to add an inline fuse at the battery and also splice into the 12GA wire at the solenoid (located next to the compressor).
Is splicing the 12GA wire into the 6GA wire at the inline fuse and the solenoid a bad idea? If so...what should I do to fix this problem? I want to make sure the wiring is safe.
Thanks.

If you solder the connection, then insulate it well, it will be fine...:D
In general it is NOT unusual, as differing size wire splices are common in many applications, all over your vehicle...;)

Awesome. I always solder and use use shrink tubing on my electric connections. Thanks!

Generally speaking you can go one size difference down, like from a 12 to a 14. But don't try to go from a 02 to a 16 and not expect a few issues.
As said above insure you have a good clean, and solid connection.

You need to find out what size wire is required for the current load. If you have the minimum size wire then you best not go smaller. You can go larger if you want, just reduces the resistance. Too small of a wire could cause a fire or at least burnt insulation and a short.

make sure that the fuse being used will protect the smallest size wire being used. The wire gauge has a maximum load and the fuse should be matched.

Like what already has been said switching wire size throughout a vehicle is not uncommon. Just remember you must have a solid connection and shrink. Also the fuse size is important. Fuse for the smaller 12 ga wire.

Oh yeah, forgot the most important part. X2 what he said.

I will be using the 12GA wire and fuse holder/fuse that came with the kit, then switching to 6GA to make the long trek to the back of the Rubi...so fusing for the 12GA is no problem.
I have the tank and compressor mounted...time to run some wires and hoses! Who knew NPT fittings were so darn expensive!!!! Good gravy!
