Ok, so the rotors and pads need to be done on the ole CJ, the rotors for sure. I got all the parts thinking this would take the same 90 minutes it took to do the brakes on the TJ. Wrong. The rotor appears to be a part of the hub assembly. Anyways, Stu-offroad is great but lacks big time in the CJ build category. Anyone got a good site to step me through this, or good detailed step by step instruction?

This is what makes swapping a broken CJ front axle on the trail so much fun!

Once you've got the caliper off the rotor, you need to remove the locking hub and bearing nuts, then give a tug on the rotor/hub to loosen the outer bearing. Be sure not to tug too hard lest the bearing flop out onto the ground. I's a good idea to have a rag waiting to catch it. Once the outer bearing is out the hub/rotor assembly slides off. Have it turned, and reverse the process to reassemble. Pretty easy, but you'll need a bearing nut socket. I'd lend you mine but it's a long drive :)

I can't seem to get the caliper off and I need to replace the front rotors...they are toast. Should I look for a chiltons or haynes manual? Seems the way the caliper is attached is different than I am used to and I just can't understand how it is supposed to come off. Looks like it would pull off with the hub/rotor assembly. And will I have to pound the wheelstuds into the new rotor? I think I will.

What is a bearing nut socket? Just so I know what I am asking for at the counter.

If you CJ caliper is like my 79, there is a hex/allen bolt at the very bottom. You loosen/remove the bolt and then tap the flat 'pressure/retainer bar' (for lack of a better word) out which will free up the caliper to be pulled away from the rotor.

If your rotors are that bad, then you'll need new and you should buy a new set of wheel studs and (imo) have them pressed in. You might be able to tap them in and then seat them when you tighten/torque your lug nuts.

I'm not sure of the official name, but if you tell them you need a wheel bearing nut socket they'll know what you mean. The year/model Jeep will tel them what size you need.

My 79 CJ7 is exactly like that./\ /\ What he said. Once I figured out that keeper it was pretty straight forward.

I bought a spindle nut socket at AMC4X4 Savage $8.95 they are just south of 67th Ave and Northern. And I used a lugnut to seat the wheel studs.
