Take a look at the attached photos...

THis onne shows the agle of the pinion on the back of the D44 axle... basically I shimmed it to ZERO with a jackstand..
11072

This one shows the Spring perch ( not welded just set to zero as well...)
11073

Next one shows the Angle based on the top of a new spicer Balljoint in the knuckle..... take a look....

11074

Does this mean that on my J10 axle the Stock 'caster' is basicallt right around 10 degrees? ....... For some reason this camber junk just isn't sticking in my head ... I'm thinking that the camber will be "ok" without rotating the knuckles on the tubes,....

NEXT question as I was out in the garage last night grinding to make my 15" rims fit (had to grind the calipers on the D60 rear as well) take a look at the photo.. is the area outlioned in RED really required... The rear weld on disc tabs do not have all this EXTRA..... why would the front ....
11078

and lastly..... here's how it sits this AM...

Jeff,
FWIW, in both your first & third pics, you show the protractor sitting in locations that are NOT likely to provide accurate measurement results...

Regarding your question about camber being something like 10 deg... I believe you are referring to Caster... The answer is no.

According to the '76 OEM service manual;
- Caster is factory pre-set for J-10 @ 4 degs with a tolerance of +1/-0 deg.
- Camber is factory preset @ 1.5 with a tolerance of + 0.5/-0 deg...
- Steering Axis inclination is pre-set @ 8.5 deg... (which BTW, is what it appears you were attempting to measure...)
- Toe-in 3/64 - 3/32 inch

hope this info helps...;)

I think it will depend on where the springs set the pinion angle. I think you are gonna have to install the unit and make the measurements. Just tack the perches in first in case changes have to be made. Also, what is the relationship of the pinion to the axis of the steering pivot.

I guess what I am saying is, without the axle in place, and weight on the springs, it will be hard to determine where the castor will end up. I think your assumption might be that the perches will end up on exactly the bottom of the spring and this might not be the case.

Is that clear or are you more confused? I have that effect on people :)

Bolt it up, and put some weight on it and set your pinion angle. Then check your castor. Try to find a larger flat spot to put the angle finder on. That is the only way your going to get an accurate measurement.
