Subject: Power Line
Hi, all.
I am going to try to make the Power Line run on 2/13. I have an out of town guest who owns a vintage (?) Land Rover. He may come along (in the jeep, not to worry). I get home from a road trip very late Friday night, so if anything goes wrong I may miss it. This will be my first group run. I am psyched. I also have enjoyed the threads immensely. I also find that it is real easy to delete email you don't want to read. I get 30-50 business emails a day and 10-15 from VJC. Guess which ones I enjoy the most. No contest!! This is a great group.

Subject: Mr. Ed's Excellent Adventures
The other day I called ASA4WDC to find out what happened to my membership
application, which I sent in mid December. The phone was answered by a guy who
is known as "Mr. Ed". Mr. Ed is an older gentleman and quite a character. I
never found out what happened to my application; they seem rather disorganized
over there. But Mr. Ed was interesting to talk to.
Mr. Ed is in to serious knarley extreme rock crawling. He sells videos of his
adventures. These are mostly in AZ and New Mexico. He has videos of the
Terminator and Woodpecker Mine for example.
If interested, check out his web site at <A HREF="http://www.mreds.com/">
www.mreds.com</A>.
BTW, he also told me the BLM plans to close down Silly Mountain to vehicles.
If you aren't familiar with Silly Mtn, it's the hill just east of Apache
Junction off 60 - easily seen on the way to the Superstitions, on the North
side of the road. Its supposed to be a Class 4 trip to the top. It's a short
run. If anything it'd make a romantic place to watch the sun set over the
Valley.
ASA4WDC is working with the BLM to try to prevent the closure.

(Here you go George. This is a previous note from Doug B. Hope it helps.
Dan M.)
Dan has a good idea here, in terms of staggered start times. It probably
takes at least 15 minutes or so to get to the class 4 stuff on Log
Corral, so I'd suggest a 10:15 jump off for Power Line, to add a little
cushion. For those interested in Power Line, it should be easy to find:
Take SR 87 north from Mesa...(Log Corral is bout 8.7 mi north of Four
Peaks Road, on the west side (see previous note))
To get to Power Line, just continue north to Sunflower (very small
hamlet) and just look for the power lines bout 3.5 to 4 mi north of
Sunflower. Ed (Coyote) posted a note on it's general location. It should
be just south of the Power Lines...though the location may have shifted
a little.
I've not done Power Line, but Ed indicates that it's fairly easy and
quite scenic.
A good place to gas up before the trail is at Fort McDowell...a Texaco
as I recall. No other gas between there and the trail head.
Maps are also a good idea, esp. if your doing a trail you hadn't been on
before. Fortunately, the Power Line trail generally follows the Power
Line, so I think it'll be hard to go wrong there. However, for those
interesed, the Quad maps would be Reno Pass (for the start of the Power
Line trail); Lion Mountain (for the main part of Power Line); and
Maverick Mountain (for most of Log Corral).
If you havn't already done so, please post a note so we know who's
going, so we can keep a look out, and know who's interested in doing
which trail. Thanks

I attempted the Powerline trail this past weekend, several
things to note from my mis-adventure:
Most importantly, the Power LIne trail (FR393) is CLOSED
just south of the Dam. The Trail is Closed from Dec 1
through June 30 due to Bald Eagles nesting in the area.
This makes the area below the Dam a Protected Wilderness Area.
From talking to the Eagle Watchers, they though that if
caught there is a $300 or more fine. The eagle watchers,
Adam and Jessie (sp?) Are very friendly.
Having discovered this, I attempted to cross the river.
NOTE: THE RIVER IS NOT CROSSABLE. They are letting out
water at an increasing rate. The river looks like there
may be places to cross, but trust me it is not. If you do
try you will need the following number: Super Hook Towing:
1-602-488-3342. He is a nice man and will charge somewhere
between $200 -$300. He charged me $250. And by the way, the
water temp is is nice comfortable 56 degrees. The current is
eating out holes, REALLY BIG HOLES, in the river bottoms.
The FR393 is also fairly weathered/washed out in places,
It took me 3.5 hours to get to the Verde/Bartlett Dam. I was
moving a a pretty good clip.
It looks like once you get to the dam, you will need to
turn around and head back the same way, or try the Power Line
(FR393) to Log Corral (FR98) Triangle.
BTW: I got over 2 Gallons of water out of my engine and
still flushing....

Yikes! Thanks for your note. Sounds like the idea of crossing the Verde
is out. I assume from your note that there were no poblems from SR87 to
the Log Corral junction...correct? Since we won't be crossing the Verde,
we should be keeping clear of the closed area.

I was starting to feel left out and was talking myself into making the trip
this weekend (via Powerline) Have, since changed my mind (after reading this
post). I'll catch everyone on the next class 3 outing.
Broke in my new tires pretty well this weekend - they work great but I
definitely need to add a small lift - got some occasional rubbing on the
fenders. Wanted to check around with the group - I lack the tools and
knowledge to install a spacer lift myself, would anyone be interested in
earning a few bucks some Saturday (the shops all want to charge about $150 to
do this - an amount I don't want to pay).
Suggested future trip: What about doing Lake Pleasant up to Crown King -
camping there then doing Senator Hwy to Prescott?

Melinda,
For what it's worth, KenS was referring to a part of the trail (crossing
the Verde) that we won't be doing. As to Power Line, I believe that
there'll be at least another unmodified Jeep going. I don't believe it
would be a problem for you, but I can't speak from personal experience.
Ed (Coyote) described it as being fairly easy.
As to your suggestion about Crown King...a really good one. Great
camping up there. We'll need to schedule a trip soon. If there's a date
you had in mind...throw it out, and see who bites.

I guess that's why they say not to Jeep alone.;^)
Don't feel too bad we've all done it at one time or another. I had a similar
experience with some mud in Mexico with my old YJ (walked several miles that
day). The really good part was it was our honeymoon.
I still haven't heard the end of that one.

able to after all. Put me down for looking at the Log Corral nasty spot at
9 -- even though I'll probably go do the Power Line Road.
The big question: would anyone mind if I brought a friend with a non-Jeep
along? I've been bragging about this group so much that he decided he had
to come along, but he wants to drive his truck.
Anybody up for breakfast?

Melinda,
Different Power Line. This one is off SR87, north of Sunflower by about
3-4 miles. Trail is where the power lines cross SR87. The one you
referred to (and had been on before) is also called Power Line, but is
also known as also known as Apache Leap trail.
The two runs we'll be doing (Log Corral and Power Line) start at
different points off SR87, but come together near Bartlett Lake. Log
Corral has a very tough spot, and is not recommended for stock vehicles.
Power Line, from previous reports is fairly easy by comparison.
To get to either trail head, take SR87 from Mesa north. The turn off for
Log Corral (and other interesting trails) is where SR87 crosses over
Sycamore Creek. There's a sign marking the creek....bout 8.7 mi north of
Four Peaks Road. Trail is on the west side of the road. BTW, there are
some other cool trails in this area.
To get to Power Line...keep going north to Sunflower...not too far. Bout
3-4 mi. north of Sunflower you'll see Power Lines crossing. The trail
starts there...on the west side of SR87.

I think all we are going to be able to do is keep the road open a little longer . It would be nice if we can keep it open forever, but I have a feeling that the folks that live at its base are eventually going to tired of having so many people in their backyard. I'll keep the AZVJC posted on what's happening.

[This was sent yesterday. I'm not sure any of my AOL e-mail is getting out. If
you didn't get this message and feel you should have, let me know. ;-)
Thanks for the report! Looks like crossing the Verde is out. But the loop from
Log Corral to Powerline and SR-87 is still viable, since these roads meet well
west of Bartlett Lake.
I believe the Powerline Road is rated a Class 3. So everyone planning to come
should be able to make it. From your run Ken, do you think it is a 3?
BTW, the Mesa 4-Wheelers are planning a trip to Bartlett Lake on the same day.
Anyone know what route they are taking?
As for the Eagles, Arizona has about 35 pairs of breeding Bald Eagles. The
breeding population is primarily restricted to the Salt and Verde rivers in
central Arizona. Last year an area around Lake Pleasant was closed off until
June 15 because a nest was discovered. I put in a call to a guy at Game and
Fish to get more details. Perhaps there is a place where we can safely see the
nest. I think the group you are referring to is the "Arizona Bald Eagle
Nestwatch". Do you have a number where I can call them?

The only way I know to figure that out yet is to go out and try it - with a
buddy that has a winch of course. Going on someone else's data leaves a lot
to be desired. The Pirates of the Rubicon claim that 400+ CFM is passable,
but those guys seem a little extreme to me. Great to daydream about though!

That would be me. This is a good kit for use with the 31 inch tires. You won't
get any rubbing on the trail even with the sway bar disconnected.
Regarding the Teraflex Budget Boost - exactly how difficult

Easy. Basically the kit has four identical spring spacers and four bump stop
extensions. Good instructions can be found at
<A HREF="http://members.aol.com/ThumprJeep/coil.html">
http://members.aol.com/ThumprJeep/coil.html</A>
In short, lift the back, remove tires, disconnect shocks at the bottom,
disconnect the sway bar, lift out the spring, install the spacer and bump
stop, but the spring back in. Repeat for the front.

Mr. Ed is in to serious knarley extreme rock crawling. He sells videos of his

BTW: I got over 2 Gallons of water out of my engine and
still flushing....

in TX), and i just wanted to look into some of the trails.......

Yikes! Thanks for your note. Sounds like the idea of crossing the Verde
is out. I assume from your note that there were no poblems from SR87 to
the Log Corral junction...correct? Since we won't be crossing the Verde,
we should be keeping clear of the closed area.

I'm resending this for directions to Log Corral. Power Line trail is
further up SR87...north of Sunflower by several miles...at the Power

Just checked the group homepage to refresh my memory - I did the Powerline
Trail (snow run in November). I'm going to go ahead and sign up for this one
too! However, it was mentioned that we are meeting up on SR87 - when we did it
in Nov. we met up on US 60 outside Forence Junction. I know this is probably
redundant, but could someone simply verify to meeting location for the Power

Hi all
I didn't think I could make the run on the 13th, but it appears that I'll be
able to after all.

If

Easy. Basically the kit has four identical spring spacers and four bump stop
extensions. Good instructions can be found at
<A HREF="http://members.aol.com/ThumprJeep/coil.html">
http://members.aol.com/ThumprJeep/coil.html</A>
In short, lift the back, remove tires, disconnect shocks at the bottom,
disconnect the sway bar, lift out the spring, install the spacer and bump
stop, but the spring back in. Repeat for the front.
