View Full Version : AZVJC Anniversary Run Poll Date Thread

This is just a thread to try and come to some consensus on what weekend we want to try and schedule the CK run for. We've normally done it in August yet tried to stay away from Labor Day because of family acitivities.

This is why I've put the poll up with the three dates in August the 11th, 18th, or 25th.

If there doesn't seem to be any kind of excitement over those dates then we can start a new poll thread and do it all over again.

Saturday, August 18th would be more traditional based on the last 4 years I showed..

I figure we can leave this poll up til at least until the beginning of July. We should be able to get a good handle on when we want to do it by then.

X2! I did it twice with doors, top and A/C, don't think I will do it as open as I run now.:( Too freakin hot. It would be so much nicer in Oct or Nov.

We always run around 530 and get up and out of the heat by 10. :D It's those later runs that get a little warm. :D

THe only problem with CK now is, there is only 1 or 2 real obstacles, and they have a fwy as a bypass. I ran this about 2 months ago, in the pouring rain with a friend of mine, and only had to put it in 4WD one time, for an optional.:( It use to actually have some fun places, but they are almost all gone now.

We started at 9:00 last year. Yeah it was a little warm but it wasn't that bad. The only problem we had was we didn't bring enough "Canned Goods" and had to bum off other people. We ended up at CK around 5pm found a camp ground then headed for the bar which we didn't leave until 1am. Good times.

Yup, thats true. You can run at least 90% of the trail in 2WD.

I voted the 25th because I'm selfish and will be out of town on the 18th.

Every year the discusion comes up about how the trail has been paved and is not worthy, etc.

Every year there are a broken axle or two, flat tires, and occasional flops.

Good fun, hope to make it and see some of you out there.

PS- East side runs start and stay LATE !

Well, if we have another 10 mores years of Good rain the CK trail will be rough again...

Yup, thats true. You can run at least 98 1/2% of the trail in 2WD.

Fixed it for you.

18th sounds good. :) not a drill weekend and we'll all be off work. :D although the 25th will be closer to the cooler weather...
Beginning of August sounds torturously hot.

How about an east side event :) I"m sure I will be working all 3 dates anyway. What is all involved in this event?

I voted for the 18th, since thats around the weekend we did it last year.
I ran it all open last year and it really wasn't bad at all. We headed out at 6, and got out of the heat before it became an issue. Then again it really doesnt bother me.
Yea it's 2wd most of the way now, but its a tradition, and the reward at the top is worth the run. I will probably camp this year as well, and throw the top and doors on, the dust last year was horrible!!

Meet at Castle hot springs rd and wheel to the top of crown king, the reward is a nice dinner and a beer! Then camp or head home.

Food for thought
What about having it on both weekends..... That way it will break up the group & be more manageable for such a large crowd on this trail.... I prefer the 5-530am start myself along with 30 other freaks (lol)
Who knows even Crown King would prefer both weekends rather than just one.
How does this sound????

That sounds cool to me. I think it would depend on the number of Jeeps. How many Jeeps are there usually on these runs? Never been to Crown King so I don't know what would be considered overwhelming to the town.

In the past we have gone up in waves of 20 or more jeeps throughout the day. Crown King is a small town, but it can handle a lot of people. It used to be able to handle more before the Switchback Saloon burned down.

Hate to be a thread digger here, but I'll be in state for a month and half starting the beginning of August and remembered the anniversary runs of the past and found this and wondered why there hasn't been much said lately? Has there been a date set yet?

i am with some of the others here. i am from the east side and 1) wouldn't mind an east side run or 2)a different spot other than CK as the road is not as fun

If you go it helps to go early in the morning to beat the heat and you also get the choicest parking at the top :)

The run to Crown King is the anniversary run for the VJC and celebrates the first run that the club ever held. This is a tradition and will be my third year. Forget an east side run, show up and it will all make perfect sense.:D

I'm in for the 18th and will be camping.

Hi all,

We are a little more than a month away and i think this poll needs to be closed so we can get the run organized. I would like to open another thread for trail leaders and tailgunners as well as times. As it sits now it looks like the 18th is the date. I will go ahead and start the thread and hold off on the date until confirmed.

On a run with this many Jeeps. The easier the trail the more fun you will have. If it gets harder it gets Slooower. Besides with a group this big it's all about the people, man.

At this point, my vote would be useless. I am hoping to make any of those dates. Hopefully I can get this ARB bull bar swapped out by then. If there are any '97-'01 Cherokee owner out there interested, let me know.

Looks like Saturday August 18th has the consensus. I'm going to go ahead and close this thread so that people can now start their own threads to sign up for different times etc....
