Subject: Dual runs Saturday 2/13

The idea of having an easier run in parallel with the Log Corral run seems to
be catching on.

The idea is for those who want to try the Class 4 trail, meet at the Log
Corral trailhead at 9 AM. Those who want an easier run meet at the Powerline
Road trailhead at 10 AM. Those who aren't sure, go to Log Corral and take a
look, since the Class 4 spot is right up front. If you don't want to attempt
it, drive up to Sunflower to the Powerline Road for the trip an hour later.

Both teams could meet up at Bartlett Lake for lunch, then decide if we want to
cross the Verde River to get back to Phoenix, or return via Powerline Road.
I'm guessing the Verde will be low enough to cross since we haven't had much
rain or snow this year.

Let me know if you are interested in the Powerline Road trip. I've never been
on it but I believe it's a Class 3 or easier. Anyone know for sure?

Dan has a good idea here, in terms of staggered start times. It probably
takes at least 15 minutes or so to get to the class 4 stuff on Log
Corral, so I'd suggest a 10:15 jump off for Power Line, to add a little
cushion. For those interested in Power Line, it should be easy to find:

Take SR 87 north from Mesa...(Log Corral is bout 8.7 mi north of Four
Peaks Road, on the west side (see previous note))

To get to Power Line, just continue north to Sunflower (very small
hamlet) and just look for the power lines bout 3.5 to 4 mi north of
Sunflower. Ed (Coyote) posted a note on it's general location. It should
be just south of the Power Lines...though the location may have shifted
a little.

I've not done Power Line, but Ed indicates that it's fairly easy and
quite scenic.

A good place to gas up before the trail is at Fort McDowell...a Texaco
as I recall. No other gas between there and the trail head.

Maps are also a good idea, esp. if your doing a trail you hadn't been on
before. Fortunately, the Power Line trail generally follows the Power
Line, so I think it'll be hard to go wrong there. However, for those
interesed, the Quad maps would be Reno Pass (for the start of the Power
Line trail); Lion Mountain (for the main part of Power Line); and
Maverick Mountain (for most of Log Corral).

If you havn't already done so, please post a note so we know who's
going, so we can keep a look out, and know who's interested in doing
which trail. Thanks

Sounds like fun! I think I'll stick with the Power Line trail, though.

Subject: Wheels/Tires anyone?

Well, I just finished filling out my taxes, and my refund is going to be
bigger than expected. I'm thinking about getting larger tires to go with my
3" Teraflex lift.

If anybody is looking to upgrade their stock tires/wheels, I've got five
15x8 Gambler-style wheels (from the 30" TJ package), 4 31x10.50x15 Dunlop
Radial Mud Rovers with about 4,000 miles on them, and one 30x9.50x15
GoodYear Wrangler GS-A spare tire. The Dunlops will fit on a stock TJ, or a
YJ with a 2 1/2" lift.

I just thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone else in the group is
looking for a "Tax Refund Upgrade". Hopefully I'll make it out on another
run soon if anyone wants to check the tires/wheels out. I hope it isn't
inappropriate to post this here.

As a follow-up, I guess I should point out that I was ideally hoping to find
somebody interested in both tires and wheels together. I'm thinking $580
for everything, or $500 for the Dunlops and 4 wheels. Alternatively, I have
somebody possibly interested in the Dunlops if anybody wants just the
wheels. It would just be easier to do as a package.

Thanks,
Jeff

Anything with a wheelbase less than 109" is a baby! What does your '81 Cherokee score!

Dan,
I like the way things are, just fine. If a guy can't enjoy a little humor then let him go. Remember, You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all the time.

PS: Looks like I might make the Log Coral Run after all. My daughter has to go to driving school that weekend (Speeding in her mustang)Ha Ha, so the collage trip has been postponed.

I agree with those who posted that things are fine the way things are. I
see no abuse (well..except for the VIN guy). Some may get wrapped a
little tight...let 'em go. As Ed said...can't please 'em all. The rating
web page was interesting...not particularly meaningful, but interesting.

I'm not sure what the problem is. It's not like we get dozens of email notes
everyday from the group. Mostly just notes about upcoming trail runs. I've
really enjoyed it, and haven't seen anything I objected to. To each his own.

Well, we lost one on that thread.

As your Benevolent Moderator I haven't tried to restrict what gets posted
here, other than a couple of obviously off-topic or otherwise inappropriate
posts.

If you don't like what is getting posted or you want to see things more
restrictive, e-mail me and we'll discuss it. I haven't had any complaints so
far though, although we've had several people unsubscribe lately.

As we get more and more members we may have to get more creative. For example,
we could create a second mailing list for general discussion and keep the
original just for organizing trail runs.

Just thought I would throw in my vote that I like things the way they are.
This is a great forum to discuss things amongst Jeeper's from Arizona. I
don't think people should have to fear posting something, especially when it
is Jeep related, as the Jeep Rating post was.

Hi George

I know the deck is stacked against us larger types, but I thought that everyone else might have fun with it. (Go to the page and click "view source" - full size Jeeps start out with the lowest initial score of everything except 'all other Jeeps') We need to get dirtroad.com to add bonus points for cargo capacity, towing capacity, being able to lay down and sleep in the back of the Jeep, ability to carry a Suzuki Samurai in the back of the Jeep, etc.

I'll betcha we still beat some them though. :-)

Hmmmm....not quite the reaction I expected. The FSJ list had a lot of fun
with that one, even starting a thread about who had the LOWEST score. Some
people griped about the rating system being stacked in favor of the smaller
Jeeps, but everyone took it for what it was: a mildly entertaining, not
very informative link that doesn't mean a thing in the real world because it
doesn't account for the most important part of the Jeep: the driver.

Oh well....my ex-wife always said that my only talent was pissing people off
:-)

Then again, maybe the guy who left DID run his Jeep through the rating and
couldn't stand being beaten by a truck as ugly as mine!

Happy Motoring

Most of the trail is shown on the Maverick Mountain USGS Quad
map...which can be obtained at Wide World of Maps in Mesa; REI in Tempe.
I'm sure there are other places. Also, it shows up on the Arizona Atlas,
and likely shows up on Forest Service maps.
