Dan and I had been talking about a camping trip for March, up Cherry
Creek. It's a very scenic all day trip that takes you into the pines of
the Sierra Anchas. The trail itself is officially closed (washed out)
but I've done it twice w/ no problems. I'd say it's a class 2+ to a
light class 3. Not paricularly challenging, but the scenery is
spectacular, and there are some side trails that look interesting and
worth exploring.
We'll end up on the Globe/Young Highway (improved dirt rd.), and there
are several good camping spots up there.

We currently have 68 members and growing. I believe this makes us the largest

I knew the AZ_VJC was growing, but I had no idea we'd gotten that big already.
So like I was saying earlier, with 68 members, there should be no shortage of
opportunities to go wheelin' with at least a few of the other members. Anyone
interested in going out next weekend? No football, no baseball, and no real
basketball yet. What else could you possibly have to do? ;-)

Well, it takes a while to get to the trail (near Roosevelt of the Globe
Highway), and basically all day to get to the mountains. You could do it
in a day, but you'd be back fairly late.

Looks like the 2/13 date is it for the Log Corral run. Let me know if this
date is a problem.
This is a Class 4 run. Most of it is actually Class 3 with one short
challenging part rated Class 4. Stock Jeeps are not recommended. Notes from
DougB follow.
Details on what time and exactly where to meet to follow.

QD's but no lockers yet. Be back in a week, See ya

Trail rating: Class 4 - Need lift; good size tires; l/s rear or
lockers.
Location: (N 33*47.858'/W 111*29.534'). Off SR87 at Sycamore Creek
bridge (signed), bout 8.7 mi north of Four Peaks Road. Just after the
bridge, cross over SR87 (to the west). Follow the trail for a short way
and we'll assemble on a flat spot next to the creek.
Time: How's 9a sound?
Notes: This is not a trail for unmodified vehicles. The beginning of the
trail is quite rough and rocky and is a very strong 4. It had been
washed out several years ago, and basically you have to slowly maneuver
over and between some very large rocks. Expect some banging, and the
potential for hang up. Going is slow, but then the trail opens up and
is fine.

This is not to frighten anyone about this run, I am only telling of my experiance.I made this trip 2 times. The first time with a lift and 33" tires. It was slow going but passable. The next time I had added ARB lockers Front and Rear and changed my gears to 4:10's and a Warn fullfloating rear axle kit. Well this was the first trip with all the new upgrades, and I had the worst time ever on the trail. While trying to pass the class 4 part I got stuck in between some rocks and could not get myself out. While trying I smoked my clutch, bent my drag link and and damaged my new rear locking hub. We had to Hi-Lift the front end and drive forword off the jack. That freed me up, but I had no left steering. We were able to straighten the drag link some, so I could complete the trail. Then, I noticed my rear tire going flat the rocks put a small hole in the side wall. After changing it with the crappy spare I had, I was able to go about 3 more miles then the crappy spare gave out. I had to use a buddies spare to finish and get home. This trip solidly convinced me that I needed a HI-Lift and a full size spare on board.
I also put a tear in my top, caught it on a rock. Well, I would love to make this run on the 13th , just to get back at the rocks, but I have to go to CA and check out a collage with my daughter that week end. You all have fun and lets here your stories. This was my worst day out ever.

Subject: Trail Run on 2/13
Idea...Some have expressed an interest in heading out on the 13th, but
are concerned about the class 4 spot. One idea is for one group to take
the alternate route (PowerLine Trail) to Bartlett Lake. This is the way
out we'll likely be using from Bartlett Lake after Log Corral.
Basically, the 2 groups could meet at the lake for lunch, and either
cross the Verde, or head back on the Power Line to SR87. Log Corral,
Power Line, and SR87 essentially form a triangle, with Bartlett Lake
being where Log Corral and Power Line come together.
I've not done Power Line, but I attached a note from CoyoteEd, who
indicates that it's fairly easy.
If there's interest, let me know and I'll try to get more info.
Also, those who are interested in Log Corral, shoot me a note, so I have
an idea of how many want to do this one. Thanks

I think I'll check out the Log Corral to start. Since the difficult spot is
right at the first and short, I could scope it out and decide if I think I can
make it. If not, perhaps I'll go the power line trail instead. Where does the
power line trail intersect SR-87?
Perhaps those who want to go directly to Power Line could meet 1 hour later
than those starting at Log Corral. That would allow some of us to check out
Log Corral and change our mind!

Great Idea,
Kathy and I were looking forward to making the Feb run our first, but no way could we do a class 4 run, as the TJ is still bone stock (hopefully the 2" lift will be installed by then). Having an alternate route for those not wanting to or able to take on a class 4 is a great idea, if it comes together, count us in. Looking forward to meeting you all there.

On the Reno Pass Quad, you'll see power lines crossing SR87 (from WSW to
ENE) about 3.5 to 4 mi north of Sunflower (approx 33*54'22"/111*29'45").
The Power Line trail (on the map) starts on the south side of the lines.
Of course, the quad I checked is old, so it may have moved...but it's
likely still on the south side. The trail generally follows the lines
all the way to Bartlett.
Ed says it's in a turn, which appears to be the same location shown in
the quad. My thoughs are, that the best way to find it is to go to the
Lines...turn around and look for the trail on the west side of the road.

BTW2...the Quad shows 2 trails S. of the lines. The closest to the lines
shows a structure and a turn around. I think this is what Ed was
referring to. I believe I've been on this, and there is a sign on the
gate that says road closed/no trespassing. There is another trail a
little further south, which I also was on for a short stretch...right in
a curve. This may be the trail. I'm not certain, however. It'll probably
take a little searching, but it should be easy to find.

I am looking at a Tonto National Forest map and the power line trail #393 is clearly marked. I do not recall seeing a no traspassing sign at the trail, but there was one that restricted access to the Hiway dept. yard.

What else could you possibly have to do? ;-)

Well, it takes a while to get to the trail (near Roosevelt of the Globe

in a day, but you'd be back fairly late.

Going is slow, but then the trail opens up and
is fine.

We won't be able to make the Log Corral trip (Feb 13). We are purchasing land

Great Idea,
Kathy and I were looking forward to making the Feb run our first, but no way could we do a class 4 run, as the TJ is still bone stock (hopefully the 2" lift will be installed by then).

I do not recall seeing a no traspassing sign at the trail, but there was one that restricted access to the Hiway dept. yard.
