Mid-August. No date yet set for 2007--we usually put out a poll.

Typically the annual run lands on the 3rd week on august..last year it was the Sat. the 20th.

What is that trail rated. I have an xj 2" lift on 31's open/open but by that time I may have my lift and lockers, but how I'm set up now could I make that trail?

You're just fine for the trail with your current set up. :)
I'm hoping I can finally go this year, I've missed every one since I have been here in AZ and it depresses me. :p

Wow, I think this might actually be the earliest I've seen the CK run talked about since I've been with the VJC. Maybe we should get Don or another Moderator (Than can be in this section. I'm only for Land Use) to add in a poll with some applicable dates in August. Just browsing the calendar either the 11th, 18th, or 25th looks to be right around when we do it each year.

As long as it is not the first weekend of the month, we are good to go! :D
As for the XJ with open/open running 31's, we didn't really have any problems with open/open 35's and 3"lift and 33's.....we did pass up a bunch of land rovers that couldn't make it up a hill, but I think that was due to poor driving.

I think my little cuz's power wheels Jeep could make it up CK. You shouldn't have issues, unless you are a ridiculously bad driver:)

Crown King was known for being a more challenging local trail until they took a tractor to it and made it a freeway!!! In mid 2005 it was more of a solid 3.5..Now I would say if you stay on the road its a 2.5 and if you hit the obsticles its a 3.0 at best.

sounds good I would love to take the family on the trip I've heard alot about the trail to crown king but never have been, as far as being a bad drive I've only been wheeling twice once to martinez cabin and once through box canyon and then onto upper woodpecker but by then I should have more experience so I should slow up the trip

HUH??? I am confused. You running 35s on the back and 33s on the front? Or right and left? I would run the 35s on the left, keeps you tipping away from the big cliffs.

The Crown King trail doesn't cut it anymore. Like Jason said above, its been grated and is cake now. Not to mention, the drive home from CK takes forever!
I would like to organize an informal jamboree out at either Table Mesa, White Tanks or FJ. Something with a bunch of different runs going on all day and have a BBQ in the evening. We could have trail runs for all levels. Just a thought, I'm sure organizing this would be very difficult but I know our club could come through with a great event!
What does everyone think? The annual CK run can still happen. I’d like to see something more though.

That sounds like a lot of fun. Something like this would have to take place in a cooler month like October - April instead of August like the CK run. Also, have to worry about monsoon season.
I'd be up for something like this as well as the CK run. It's nice to get out of the valley in August.

martinez mine would be a good one. Its got good rock obsticles after the cabins and switch backs after that with a little tour of the mine at the top. Then back down to the cabins for lunch or dinner. I wouldn't want to go with a giant group like the ones that usually go to crown king though.
I'm on vacation this weekend and next but after I return if anyones wants to run crown king or martinez mine, let me know.

This sounds like a lot of fun. The trail choices could handle a larger number of people than a single run, and the BBQ is a great idea. I agree with Jamie about cooler time of year.

A AZVJC jamboree in fj would be fun! Lots of fun trails!
A few easy trails for stockers!
A few 3.5's for us DD's
A few 5.0's for the buggies!
Places on cottonwood to set it all up!
We all know where it is!!

I like the idea of the jambo type setup, but this day and age getting a permit for a group outing like that could definitely be an issue.
I don't really look at the CK run as really a challenge for people, but more of a rememberance of how the club got started from Mike, Jim, and the rest of those guys. It's easy enough for anyone to do it and there are some spots people can play on. However the gathering of people up in CK over a cold one of your choice and a chance to talk smack on people in person is really what makes me hit it every year.
I guess that I'm thinking that making something bigger and better doesn't always need to happen.

In looking at this closer, I want to avoid FJ. I have a feeling we'll get hassled due to the State Land and other issues concerning FJ.
Ideally, we should have it at Table Mesa. All the trails are very close and the river bed you cross on the way to Lower Terminator would be a perfect staging area and BBQ spot. There is a ton of room. I would also want to have this event in late Sept/early Oct.

Whould we be required to get a permit? I want to organize this like its just another run. There would be no fees nor cost. We would basically go and run a bunch of trails and then have a BBQ. Very informal. If this is too much hassle, then we simple won't do it. I don't know much about organizing a event so I have a lot to learn.
Thanks

I have an idea. Ben and I were talking about opening our house to have a big housewarming jeeper BBQ after it is finished being built. We'll be out towards FJ, and I can talk to him and make sure he is still up for it, but our house will be done in September and we could probably host a mid October BBQ....That would give us enough time to get the yard and BBQ done.
We loved hackberry, and I think that would be a fun run.

A caveat on that, I had heard of the annual run a month ago, and although crown king is easier, it is one of my fav small towns and has been for years. We were filthy and caked in dirt, but it was a fun little run. We'd be happy to do it again, and there is something to be said about traditions. Sometimes they get old to people, but commemorating events is pretty important. We are down for the annual being in Crown King as it will be our first, and we'd hate to see the tradition go by the wayside before we even get a chance to partake in it.
That being said, if anyone wants to do a winter event, that would be cool also. :)

I could host a fall/winter get together at my house. full acre and plenty of parking. perryville and indian school. 10 minutes from I 10 and watson for a white tanks run and then a BBQ at the house. the back yard landscaping will be done by then. 2 horse shoe pits basket ball court and a playground for the kids.

Ok.
Just a recap.
We should do the August Crown King run to the COOLER pine country, maybe even have a BBQ up there, (There's plenty of spots for this...) This will be in keeping with tradition, etc.
Who ever thought of a BBQ in the desert in August, either hasn't been here long, or is just plain not worried about other people's comfort level...
If we wanna get all fancy and stuff, someone look into getting Kentuck Springs up there by Crown King reserved for the weekend we all go. We may all have to kick in some money for camping, and if we don't all fit, there's plenty of surrounding "No Pay areas"...
If you all want to do a "NON-EVENT" in Table Mesa, in October or late September, keep the "Organization" loose and your story straight, and there should be no problem.
"Officer we came out here to run some trails, and realized we all knew each other. Isn't that great!?"
I'm sure there's some time to work on our "Story" should the need arise.
The Lower Agua Fria crossing for an assembly point is a good Idea, since Law Enforcement usually doesn't venture much past Table Mesa Road...
If you are thinking Florence Junction, get ready for some heat from enforcement. Cottonwood Canyon Rd is a COUNTY road, and the Sheriff does patrol it. Compare it to Table Mesa Rd, only WORSE.
I don't think Florence Junction is a viable option.
Additionally, if some of you want to do a BBQ at your house, do it as a separate event, post it up as a meet and greet.
And as far as the "Original Dirty Half Dozen", It was Doug Ballard, Dan Weed, Jim Florence, Jim Langdon, Scott Kruize, Scott Ruby, and Larry.
Mike came in afterward.

What about the country thunder area at FJ? If we can contact someone from there maybe we can set something up to use that area for a BBQ/camping.

why could we not do a road tour if you will of the three valley hot spots FJ TM and WT one each per month. that way locals can play at home and others can see new areas. then there is enough time between runs repair and regroup. we could do the CK run in aug then TM in sept FJ in oct WT in nov. then we would have hunter's great BBQ in dec. this woul give people the ability to show off there home turf as it were. just my take on it. no one gets left out and everyone has time to learn what permits are needed and where to get them.

I am so not trying to rain on anyone's parade here. I was just thinking out loud about all of the hoops we are having to jump thru right now with the land agencies and I know one of the major ones we ran into with FJ was in regards to Group Outings and permits related to such. Now TM is ran by an entirely different field office so that might be a more viable option to do a large event with multiple runs on different trails etc....
Thanks for the heads up Bill. It's been so long now I was drawing a blank. :D

I'm definatly in for CK! Never been there!
A group event would take a lot of planning, but it could be fun. You guys and gals that are our land issue specialists would know 'if, where and when' better than us, so any input is gladly accepted! The idea of a winter jamboree is cool though!
I would gladly volunteer to help in planning such an event!

Yeah!
Me too!
Only I've been there!
Planning a 'Non Event' like this isn't all that difficult!
It's really not as tough as you think!
As posted earlier, we could do a winter "Non Event" too!
We may take you up on your "volunteer" status!
Exclamation point!

So I'd say we are about due to setup a poll for the CK Run for August. We've got pretty much 3 Saturday's that surround when we normally do it. You all want a poll added to this thread or to have a new thread started?

Looks like two runs this year.
I'm leading a group on Saturday morning, leaving at 6 AM (as the group grows, there may be a 5 am and/or a 7 am as well...)
Joe is leading a group on Sunday that leaves at 9 am.
Both should fun. Check the Calendar and click on the day you want to go, then post up so we'll be looking for you!
Look forward to running with you soon.
