Howdy all.

A few days ago there was a thread that had some folks that were interested in a Winching 101 Class?

I thought I'd try and get something going. Here's my idea and we can take it from here.

Unfortunalty, my weekends have become pretty busy so I dont have much time to get away. I also figure its getting pretty hot and I am in no mood to sit in the sun and talk about stuff. With that in mind, I thought we could use my shop to hold the clininc.. Crank up the swamp cooler, pull in a few vehicles from members to use as demo's, and talk about it. Have a few cold ones if desired and order some pizza and make a fun afternoon/evening out of it.

All in all, I'd say no more than a couple of hours to go over it all. Depending on questions and how many "stories" get told, could be shorter or longer.

Some of the things and subjects I could cover:

Understanding how Your winch works:
Understanding how winches work
Myths about winching:
How cables break
Ways to protect you or your vehcile in case of a failure
Compare some of the more common winches on the market
Understanding weight ratio's in vehicles when winching
Your Shovel is Your Best Freind when winching.
Synthetic line issues

There is more but this should be a overveiw.

I am thinking in 2 to 3 weeks? Saturdays or maybe a Friday night?

Who's interested? (We will start here):)

For what it's worth I have the outline I put together for the recovery 101 workshop Jeff and I (and Travis and Danno) did. I'll copy and paste it. I hand wrote some other items in but it didn't make it into the document but I'm sure you can add to this. I also covered using a winch extension with a bung to adjust the length of the winch line to fit your needs. In addition I worked up a sweat and demonstrated the use of the highlift for winching. During that manual winching demonstration I also through in the Jack Mate into the mix. Here's the outline:

Familiarize with
Importance of work gloves
D shackles
WLL, SLL, Nominal breaking strength
Yanker straps (kinetic energy straps)
Never attach a yanker strap to a trailer ball
Tow ropes
Recovery straps
Recovery points (always frame mounted)
Snatch block
choker chain
grab hook vs slip hook
extension rope
winch controller
hilift jack
top clamp strength
lifting mechanism
always stow the jack with the lifting mechanism in the up position
offroad base
accessory kit
using extension ropes
chain
always recheck rigging
never use casting hole under lifting tongue for D-shackle
Advantages of the JackMate in the rocks
Try to always push down, not pull down on the handle while jacking
to decrease the chance of letting go of the handle and hitting your
jaw
Stabilize jack
Always maintain contact with the jack
Shear pin
hilift maximum ratings for lifting, winching, and clamping
Pull pal

Winch:
Worm drive vs Planetary drive
Solenoid pack vs integrated solenoid
hand signals
wrap up rope
wrap out rope
bump trigger
sthop
hands in winch

GVW of vehicle and selecting the proper winch rating
Always attempt to use 80-90% of your available rope
Discuss how extra wraps on the drum affect winch
Winching on the 1st wrap provides full capacity
Pull by layer (Warn 9.5ti)
1st layer: 9,500lbs
2nd layer: 8,650lbs
3rd layer: 7,920lbs
4th layer: 7,400lbs
5th layer: 6,940lbs

Hand over hand when paying in the rope.
Using a snatch block
single line pull
double line pull
change direction pull

I think you misspelled lynch. :D

But seriously folks, I'll be here all week, and would be interested in learning about winches.

I'm going to hijack for one second, and then back to topic --
nope, don't like to lynch - I'd tie him to a stake and plant it over a fire ant hill after dowsing his feet with honey if I didn't like him, which isn't the case :)

and back on the road.....is there a decision as of yet on what day/time this will be and how far out??????

Ok! Guess were a go. Maybe the 12th of May, should be Saturday I believe. Maybe late afternoon? I have to check with some issues on my end for timing but I think that should do.

It will be held at my shop which is in Tempe Right around the 202 and 101.

625 S Smith Suite 1, Tempe, AZ, 85281

I plan on just doing the Winch Safety type stuff and winch info. If we get finished early or those that want to stick around, we can get into other stuff as people ask for it. I'm game for that.

Useing a Hi-lift? Yeah, that's 202 and 303, but man, do I have some good Hi-Lift stories.

Sounds good. I may have the boy, if so, I'll stay back and send Ben...aparently they have them learn winching in school for his military occupation, but that is on 5 ton and deuce and a half trucks....I'm sure there is also differences in terrain and little things here and there that he'll want to pick up. It gets him out of the house to do "man stuff" anyway so I don't have him doing "honey do's" on his time off!

I'll be there. Sounds like a very worthwhile trip to the east side. I don't get to go wheelin much but have had a winch for over a year. Only used it once to pull a tree out of the ground. I guess I've got a lot to learn.
