View Full Version : Mall Crawler....
My Green Jeep

Up until a week ago, I never knew my jeep was considered a "mall crawler"...
When I asked my husband what a "mall crawler" was he said "your jeep". I asked him to define the word "mall crawler" and he told me...
I don't think so...
Ok everyone... just asking... does this jeep look like a "mall crawler" to you?

Ok... instead of scratching and denting up my jeep... we have a "his and hers" jeep... these pictures are when my son 1st got her (then we bought her from him)... she is a bit dinged up and has better tires, a lift... a little bit of this and a little bit of that added to her... she is the jeep that will be taken offroad and dented up...

The picture posted by XJDOYLE, is of my Jeep, and it is by no means a Mall Crawler. It is less than a year old, which should explain why it still looks good. It does have some scratches, and some dents. It's just that all the dents are on the under-belly skid plates. It has been to Martinez Cabin twice, Sunflower Mine once, and up Widow Maker twice. And if all goes right, Broken Arrow (and more) this weekend.
Now, go here and apologize. :) :D

I told Walt (WalterD) that I wanted to take my jeep out this weekend to Sedona "AND" do some wheeling.. but something to do with big tires... factory rearend... so until that gets fixed..changed..completed... I am in the passengers seat of his jeep...

Okay, I would say on the spare tire cover alone it is a mall crawler....I love frogs too, but why not put rainbows and lollipops on the jeep? :) There is a time and place for girliness, and the outside features of your jeep is not that place...nor will it ever have a time...if you don't want it considered a mall crawler (in my opinion)...
But, if you actually take that jeep off road on trails harder than 1.5-2.0, then no, your jeep wouldn't be a mall crawler......you can have the biggest prettiest lift and still be a mall crawler from the definition I know of it.

I find it funny that many people that make fun of Mall Crawlers probably don't drive your "REAL" Jeep on a daily basis to and from work. You probably have a truck, or a car (GASP!), and only wheel your Jeep on the weekends. And a lot of you, I know because I see you, actually tow your Jeep to the wheeling locations. If you're going to tow your Jeep, why not just build a rock buggy?
I just don't get it. What is wrong with daily driver Jeeps? Do they have to be all dented and scratched to be cool with AZVJC? :D
Note: The above post was in humor. Please don't firebomb my house. :D

Ours is a daily driver and it gets dirty, and I don't say "mall crawler" with disdain. :) I would hope that it was not only dented jeeps that were allowed to be on virtual jeep - that would be as silly as saying only republicans could be members - or only people who drove 3.5 - 4.0 trails could be! :) If that were so, there wouldn't be trail sections for pleasure trails! :) And towing the jeep is probably a good idea for those who can -- the trucks get better mileage!! :)

I park mine at my apts for weeks on end when its broke. does that make it an apt crawler since its usually parked on the curb till they tell me it looks bad to ahve it on the curb... or even in the parking lot at all :(
Is it bad when they say "no abandoned or broke down vehicles" and you have to warn them that your jeep DOES MOVE but just looks like its abandoned or broke down?

I daily drive mine....with 4.88's, 35's a 5 spd and autolockers front and rear.
But there is an underlying "gotta have dents and scratches" to be cool tone here on VJC...and thats fine...because there are some kick butt rigs on this forum..with guys who know how to wheel.
I am one that still wants his Jeep to be nice...and get crap for it..but thats ok too...cuz I do wheel it..I love getting out on dirt...even if its a long gravel road thru the desert, just as much as I like crawling up washes and rocks.
My Jeep is My Jeep...not anyone elses...and Ill build it and wheel it as I see fit...if that means Im a little more careful on Anaconda...then so be it..I cant throw it on a trailer and back it into the back yard and jump in my "other" vehicle..because my wife daily drives that one to work. I got thru it with the help of some good friends...same as I got thru the Cracks with another groups of good friends....same as I got thru Martinez Canyon back when I started...and Log Corral...and so on and so on...
Not everyone will build a hardcore rig...and not everyone will even lift theirs. But thats part of whats cool about it...each person is different...and each Jeep is too...
There is nothing wrong with having and KEEPING a nice Jeep...:D

I'd say it is just girly...but if your husband doesn't have to drive it with the spare tire cover on it, there probably isn't an issue there! :) But it still is lifted higher than ours with bigger tires and can probably do some serious obstacles offroad.

Some of us that trailer our jeeps don't have highway tires. Why would i kill my tires driving it 35miles to a trail when my truck and trailer have tires that are for the highway. Also some of us like AC and nice relaxing rides home after a hard days wheeling. But thats really not the point. The point is i go out and spend $300 a tire for my crawler and get 50mins trail time and 2500 miles highway. Also most of us that trailer our jeeps play on harder trails then the mall jeeps and we have a higher chance of braking something too. So if you brake your daily driver out playing on sunday and then you have to drive to work 20miles one way thats a long walk also your now paying some tow truck guy to tow your heep home for you. All and all it is just smart that once you get passed the pre teen days of hitting the mall and grow up you will trailer it if you can too.

LOL...yeah ok...my mall crawler hits trials with trailered rigs...whats yer point
While having a trailer and truck to pull it is nice...it doesnt mean that a non trailer rig cant hang...most of the time its because the trailered rig has been rolled too many times and is no longer street legal with all the parts removed. Or due to mods that dont allow over 50 mph....2nd would be tires...and yes...the best reason to trailer is to remove a broke rig...and get it home. Still doesnt mean you cant without calling a tow truck.
Still...it has drawbacks as well...leaving a vehicle at a trailhead...vandalism, theft...and having to drive the rig back around to the trailhead on one way trails..
Maybe some day Ill retire the Jeep as a DD and go all out on it...and trailer it to and from...but its what I want to drive.....its a Jeep thing.

Firebombs are on their way. I resemble that remark, BUT I do have a Jeep that is street legal(although not very street friendly:o ). I have on occasion even driven it to the trails. I can do 65 MPH, but the $300+ tires are not really made for that. If I had the CASH to build a buggy, I would think about it, but why not just wheel the Jeep I already have, and the one I have sunk all the money into? Sure it has some "character marks", but I don't look down my nose at other people who actually wheel their junk or Jeep. A true mall crawler is one driven by Buffy of Snottsdale, who thinks offroading is having to drive her own Jeep through the drivethru at the local In-and-out Burger while the parking lot is being resurfaced. And Brad, YOU drive a mall crawler, but I will wheel with you anytime. Lets just go run CD or Anaconda to get there.:D To answer Green Jeeps question......do you wheel it? Or does it do street duty only? If it gets you on the dirt(and not just Scottsdale Road under construction), then NO, it is not a mall crawler. Too many people spend unGodly amounts of money on the Jeep so it looks good, but never wheel it. D35 with 35" tires and 3.07 gears= MALL CRAWLER!

Maybe some day Ill retire the Jeep as a DD and go all out on it...and trailer it to and from...but its what I want to drive.....its a Jeep thing.
Like i said when we grow up we ill trailer. Now i'm not the trailering type don't get me wrong but i do understand were it come's from i used to trailer my jeep to a trail that was 21miles for the event i was at and yes my jeep is limited to 55mph. Not a problem for me but when you are leading the trial and most of the people with you have trailers and the rest have A/T's and can run 75mph they don't want to wait for you. So i'm not here to down anyones mall crawler or anything mine used to look like that alongs time ago. But things happen you get on a trail you shouldn't have been on, you fall off the rock things happen to make you bash up your jeeps. Now if you have owned your heep for 5yrs and still have 31's and wash it every time it gets dusty then yha were talking about you! I understand that people don't go out and spend 35k on a rubi and go bash it up. Thats what H2's for. So no disrespect to DDmorris or Anyone else that is taking this the wrong way. It's all fun and games.
All i am saying is that some people like to go out spend a couple of hours looking that the trees and wildlife and some of us like looking at big rocks and wondering how the heep is going over that. So if you are just out to look at wildlife and do 3.0 and blow trials geart love it glad to see you out there if you are like me and 3.5+ is you thing then great love to see you out there. I just don't hear people say hey look at the cute thing or clean thing when they look at my POS or any of the people i wheel with. But i do hear people say that bout mall crawlers so if you don't like the name Mall Crawler you know what to do. Or you can just take it with a grian of salt and go have fun.

It is not really a trailer queen but in LAs Cruces i didn't have to drive to the next state to go wheeling it was 5 miles from house so yha it drives like poop on street and is slow but i didn't build it to get me to the post office and bring it out on sundays. and the pic is from The Good the Bad and The ugly in the Dana Ana's in LC not the best but i can't drive and take pics.

Just my $.02 on this one -
I am not new to forums, but new to this one. That said, I know enough to show some respect to the current members of a forum if you are new. I am guessing you are under 20? Reading this forum I had enough common sense and intelligence to read the sarcasm and humor in the comments. There was no fighting or need for "****" until you posted. those are some cool jeeps, definately not mall crawlers. the frogs just make it unique... the white lettering even looks good. *edit: and those who say white lettering makes it a mall crawler are crazy, the raised lettering helps with sidewall grip on the rocks. :)

The funny thing about this thread....
My friends and I all drive Jeeps, we all go offroad when we can (usually at least once a month). Our Jeeps are not heavily modded but we have fun and our Jeeps are rarely clean and sparkly....
But we all work at the mall (Apple Computer) :P
So in the parking lot of the Chandler mall you will see 2 yellow TJs, a white TJ (mine), a White XJ, a green XJ and a red Liberty.
The only shiny, non scratched and muddy car in the group is our manager's white Hummer H3! :P

No, he is not being sarcastic. I don't want to bring the club into my personal problems, but Tim (POETOFWAR) is mad at me, and, I guess, trying to get me to get into an argument on this board. I refuse to do that, so if you see him responding to me in a negative way, please just ignore his comments as I am doing.
I mean, maybe I do have a mall crawler. It is my daily drive, so I do need to be careful of the runs that I do, and it does spend more time on the paved roads than it does off highway. But it gets me where I want to go when I want to go, so I am happy with it.

Degreased all the excess after the last lube job. Cut the snot outta my fingers while washing the rims and tires too. Those things are so chewed up they are like a cheese grater.:o If it wasn't beat to hell, you might actually think it WAS a mall crawler, the thing cleans up pretty nice(except for all the rock rash):D
