My Dad has been bugging me to get my ham lisence.

I guess it is time I study and go for it. I have access to all kinds of radio set-ups.

Hymmm

I don't know about PHX area, but up here (Yavapai Co.), they have been having some "cram" courses and get all the training in one day.
Then they usually have the test session a week or two later, seems to work.

If you can't find a class, pick up the ARRL book to study and take the practice tests online for free. Once you are consistently passing, go take the test. There is usually a test every weekend in the Phoenix area. If you do this method, make sure you have a friend to fill you in on all the practical details. The license is the easy part. :)

No kidding. Practical details, like avoiding use of phoentics or SSB lingo (Q codes) on an FM repeater as neither are typically necessary. Kerchunking repeaters. Quick keying. Saying "over" on an FM repeater, especially one that has a courtesy tone. Using police phoentics instead of the correct international phonetic alphabet. Knowing how to use one's equipment. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of one's station. Knowing or being open to learning how radio works in the first place.

There are entire web sites dedicated to what not to do and also to proper nad time honored etiquette, the latter of which is sorely lacking in many new hams.

Congrats on the new ticket. Maybe we could organize a ragchew session with everyone sometime, that would be cool.
