So we are getting into getting jeep protection/armor/etc put on the jeep.

I'm asking for opinions.

If you wanted to take....say.....$500.00 and stretch it to get some protection mods, what would you guys get to start off with...what is most important to get?

Rocker gaurds... then crusher corners...
the full roll cage, update all yours skid plates, added frt and rear diff cover skids, oil pan,
steering gear box skid. etc.

Rocker gaurds... then crusher corners...

rocker guards with or without tubing? (keep in mind this vehicle has no skid plates except what the jeep factory gave her)

I'd go with rockers as most important, then oil pan and diffs

With tubing - it keeps you further away from the rocks

Oil pan skid, Rocker panel protection

with tubing...those are not in stock for up to a month according to 4wheelers...I saw some for sale used on here, but they wanted very close to what the 4wheelers price is new in box.

What brand are you looking at? Poison Spyder?

What brand are you looking at? Poison Spyder?

I want the powder coat poison spider rocker knockers - not in stock....this is the closest thing I could even find anywhere for sale private party:

http://www.offroadtoystore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=JM-TBP&Category_Code=Jeeperman-Skidz

We're going 4 wheeling to CK Sat and then Hackberry on Monday - I'm kind of wanting to get this stuff so we can put it on either tonight or more realistically, Sunday....I know we need to protect it...

Rocker guards is always first! Get'em with the tube if you can afford it! If your going to run doorless you might want tube doors too!

Second should be the undercarrage! Front dif. steering, and oil pan! Might want to change out the trackbar while your down there! That stock one will bend like a pretzel on some of these rocks!

Third should be the rear corners! Seems we are always bangin them up!

Cage! The stock cage will not hold up well in a roll. We know you dont plan on rolling, but for them that have...they love having a cage!

After that your on your own!

I know he's not very popular around here, but Troy from Toys By Troy makes some really solid armor...

Don't forget the gas tank skid. I would do that before adding crusher corners.

Called the husband....got approval to buy rocker knockers....but 4 wheelers do not have them in stock!!!! could be a month.....I really don't want to wait, because that will be somewhere close to 8 off roading trips before getting them...I'm sure we'll screw up the tub before then with the crap we're going over...
We have the factory step downs, but they have been shortened due to getting bent out of control on sunflower....
Anyone want to give me suggestions?

Lunch over now -
feel free to pm - at least I can see those from my email even though I can't respond.

we already put a good gash in the factory one at sunflower in the garden.

I have banged the worst in the following order:

Front Diff cover.
Oil pan. (nothing that coudn't be welded)
gas tank ( I wasn't using those last 3 gallons anyway)
Steering box
control arm mounts (front lower)
Body mounts
rear quater panal
fender flares
believe it or not I have never done any significant rocker damage, guess I'm not trying hard enough ;)

rockers, gas skid, oil skid

CAGE, diff guards, C/Arm skids

rear corner armor, steering box skid, frnt and rear bumper/tire carrier

first priority would be to focus on things that hold fluids... heavy duty diff covers, oil pan, steering box, transmission pan if its an automatic, etc.

Then get some good rock sliders.

It doesn't make sense to first get body protection, crusher corners, etc... If your running trails that need that stuff then you'd better protect those diffs first

Cage!, front diff guard, HD steering, sliders, gas tank skid, rear diff guard, corner protection. All the other protection won't matter of you crush your skull. I know some people think it is VERY unlikely they will roll, "I won't roll" but it can happen on the freeway to the run too, and a cage will save your life. Just depends on if you want to go to your funeral in a well built jeep with little body damage, or be wheeling a bashed in one. My wife and kids safety comes first. Even though I did a few mods BEFORE my cage, I would do it differently now.

See if they have the Rocker Knockers in stock without powder coating, then just hit them with a few coats of black spraypaint, since you will be bashing them up and probably want to repaint them anyway.

I would say rock sliders and gas tank first. You can always add rock slider bar later if you wanted. Second I would worry about your safety and get sport cage. Third lockers and diff covers you should be able get through most trails with ease and not have to bump and bang so much. Fourth get steering box skid and oil skid. By now you have two jobs and dont have any time to wheel anymore.

Bashing up your rocker would suck...but putting a hole in your oil pan would be worse.

Rocker protection comes in many flavors...but the best ones you will have to wait for (order, fab, shipping). You would be better off holding off and getting the armor that will last and do its job than settling for something because you want it now.

Take it slow and do it once/right. To address your immediate need for protection, I was planning to remove my stock rubicon sliders next weekend in order to instal my new Rokmen sliders...but if you want them for temporary protection until you get better armor, I could remove them tomorrow...you are welcome to them.

I don't think that the stock rocker guards off a LWB Rubi. will fit on a SWB TJ sport. I did the Toys by Troy rockers and his oil pan skid first. Don't regret it at all. Nobody mentioned the T-case skid, but for me, it was high up on the list. Engine and T-case are the most expensive things under there, do them first. A roll cage is important, believe me I know, but you won't get it done for $500, so take care of the essential stuff now, and plan for the big stuff as soon as you can afford it... JEEP, just empty every pocket....:)

Wayne, don't you have a Monkeybars cage like me? How much was yours? Mine is a great cage, and apparently yours is too after the rolls you took. Would you rather have had undercarriage protection or your cage at the time?;)

Lance, don't get me wrong, a full cage is a great thing, I can't say how much mine cost because Brian (Monkeybars) gave me a special deal on a new design. I really think that the stock cage would have been sufficient to save me in my roll, but glad to have the extra protection. Even a Poison Spyder bolt in cage is pricey, don't know how much, but I bet it's over $500. We all did our Jeep's vital stuff first, why not let Amber do that too. Anyway, she is only 5 feet tall, she could duck and be OK in a roll over.... :D
Sorry Amber, no offense meant, I admire the vertically challenged, especially when they have to get into a lifted Jeep....:D

Just call me short, okay? I had to use the step to get in the jeep BEFORE it was lifted...vertically challenged, socially challenged, reality challenged....I'm just altogether 'challenged'
I popped on really quick because I have been hearing from Don that Warn makes good slider bars.....also, TbT makes the extender for the roll cage for 360.00 it is just a bolt on but it comes up centerline to give the windshield area more protection...

Amber just forget about all this running around. Take out a personal loan, get some cash advances on the credit cards, forget about the house in QC, and just buy this.:D

Yeah, my dream Jeep! I talked to Brian yesterday, he gave my roll cage (his roll cage) a good inspection and pronounced it good to go. :)
You can't go wrong buying a Jeep built by Monkeybars.....:D

Yeah, my husband would start sleeping in that thing if we owned it until we got a garage! It is pretty, but I bet over time we can make one just as pretty and have the experience and learning from doing it ourselves with help and advice.....

Off work - COLE, I'LL BE THERE TO SEE YOU FOR THAT SPYDER SLIDER SET UP IN 20 MIN....

For now we're going with the spyder sliders with step downs for 380.00 *too short to get in the jeep now that its loaded....maybe a handicap lift would have been cheaper :)*
Next, I think we are going with the front diff cover, steering box protector, oil pan protector...........ADVICE on brands/where to buy would be great!
Then, going to ?Toys X Troy? for the mount on roll cage extender for the front area...quoted 360.00 on it...
finally the tie rod, transfer case skid and maybe a gas tank skid....again ADVICE on brands/where to buy would be great!

If I don't get it right away, I can ref this later...

Thank you for all of your help!!!

For protection, the first thing I would add (and I did) was a oil pan/ tranny skid. You can drive home with dent in sheet metal I just recently put on sliders. I don't get to go out nearly as often as I like, so my chances of damage as less than those who go every week. You should be fine rocker wise right now it you are careful. And for rocker recommendations, order some from Rokmen. They make a great product and have great service. They are more than most others by a little, but the quality makes up for it. They also seem to get orders shipped really quick, so you would probably get rockers from them quicker than waiting for them at 4Wheelers. And you would get a better product.

Mine are gonna be angle iron from the local steel yard, $50 for the metal and make them myself.

I'm personally in no hurry to spend a ton of cash to protect sheet metal, it's a trail rig and that money can go toward a cage, oil pan skid, axles or MORE TOOLS!

My spare parts list is getting sorta low too.

I'm thinking about going the rout Allen did and lock up the rear D35. I can get a spare carrier, ring and pinion, axles and bearings to carry around for less than just and ARB let alone swapping in a 44. Even if I explode an axle housing, D35 replacement is cheap and I love to work on stuff anyway :)

Amber, did you call DesertFab? We make them custom to fit your Jeep and can allow for future armor elsewhere (or modify later). we also sell all of the other protection your wanting from skids to cages.

Just call us at 480 288-4213

man, the site died on me as I was trying to reply to Thump...Desert Fab kind of spooked me even though I have heard some great things about their custom fabrications - as have I about Toys X Troy. The reason was that for the installation of the shocks, price of the shocks and the installation of our lift and tires it was about 500.00 higher at Desert Fab. The labor is what made the difference. I'll have to go in and look at the product - they are close enough to drop in sometime - I just won't be paying for their labor rates ever. I'm pretty loyal, so sadly for everyone but Cole and Mike, I'll be by 4wheelers the most ---- the initial service and price mean a lot to me (we are tagged with 4wheelers stickers on both sides of the hood)....
That is NOT saying I'm NOT planning on checking out what others have, though.

Warn diff covers and gas tank skids and steering box skids are less expensive than others and a tough cover. Also check out 4 Wheelers oilpan skids and engine skids.

I checked out their roll cages today...bolt on....at 4 wheelers...you can come away with those for less than what my skids were. Is that enough protection in a roll?

Amber,
I think there may have been a misunderstanding of the quote..
Full retail of the RS9000 adjustable shocks is $90.00 ea. .
We offer below Full retail price to keep in line with other shops pricing.
(If I mis quoted you the wrong shock, then of course I appologize)
4 hours labor to install the kit including shock install and allignment
at $90.00 per hour. is $360.00

We do believe that this is a fair price.

Take care

Heres my first REAL Jeep!!! After the lift/tires I got the TxT rock steps and a rear locker and it did me plenty fine for a year!! I then decided while in Jury duty for 6 weeks (and a lifestyle change) that I needed a bigger Jeep and the evolution began on a 2005 unlimited and of coarse as you wheel and understand what you need becomes far more clear! Then after some time passes 2 years you decide that you need to spend another $6K on your Jeep..Yet still not and never Finished:rolleyes:

Mod #2 Rockers DONE

Mod #4 Bigger tires 35" or 37"!
