I've been on the road alot for work the last few weeks and just week alone i hit 5 states in 4 days!!! Well i've been leaving the CJ in the long term lots at the airport. Its gotten very hard to start i have used carb cleaner to get it going and when it does turn over and get running its ok for a little while. Once i start to drive the idle starts to rev like mad!!!! i can feel it when i start to brake and when i park i have to it takes off as well. So i shut it down right away. I looked under the hood and nothing looks like its binding up anywhere. Does it sound like the float bowl is cracked???? What can it be?????? I'm in Ct.now and will be flying home late Sunday afternoon. Any help would be great
BTW its a weber 32/36 carb
THANKS!!!!!!!

sounds like a possible vacum leak...

or the throtle plates/ linkages are sticking open slightly.

If it were a vac leak wouldnt it do it when i start it?? I let it run for a few minutes then kick it down and it idles fine its only after i've been driving. how much should the throtle plates be open if at all at idle????

Sounds like choke problem to me.

Try plugging off your brake booster vacuum source, and see if that doesn't stop all the fuss... From your description, it would seem there is a decent chance the booster diaphram has ruptured...;)

It sounds like the choke is not opening up after the engine warms up. I'm not familiar with the carb on your engine but there needs to be a heat source to open up the choke on the carb. Sometimes it's electric other times it's exhaust heat. Check the Choke linkage for binding. Take the air cleaner off and look at the choke when you are having this issue and see if it is still closed. This will verify if it is the choke, if you find the choke is closed with your fast idle, you will then need to identify the cause, binding, broken spring bad linkage etc.

Quick update....... landed last night and i tried to start it to go home and it didnt start. It urned and i sprayed carb cleaner into it and it ran for a few seconds then quit. I was to tired and jet lagged to mess with so i called my wife and she picked me up. My Jeep is in the Pre-Flight lot on 44th St. and i have to get it out today, I'm going to get some starter fluid and maybe a new fuel filter (changed out the last one 12 to 18 months ago) Anyone have any other ideas why it not catching and starting?????
TIA

well look at fuel to make sure it is getting that. Then check to see if it is sparking at the plugs. Then you should have your answer why it is not starting. Them old jeeps would start with a old rusty carb and a dented up ciol and 15 year old plugs and wires so. On the idle point the first thing i would do is run a vacum test on all the lines to see if one of your hoses may have a crack in it but is a slight one and only opens up with heat. Then i was yank that carb off and rebuild it sould not take but 45min to take of and put back on and set it. I had an old jeep that had to be re jetted for summer and winter. Test old bugger should have kept it. Another thing is too is maybe your throtle cable is sticking a little too try looking at that.
