Just curious. How many people that read this tonight are going on the
Battle Axe run tomorrow? There are at least two Jeeps, probably three from
here in Tucson that are heading up for tomorrow's ride.

Still meeting at 8:30 at the Texaco, right?

Later,

I have done the north part of it and the trail over Cow Flat Mtn. Watched
Steve push around some refrigerator-sized boulders with his truck.
Definitely an overnight trip!

I am expecting about 20 vehicles. This trail can handle a big group
problems. The coke ovens area is a bit tight, but we'll fit!

I hate to do this, but I've got a sick kid at home and I'm going to have to
bow out of tomorrow's run. It was already questionable after my other son
broke his arm playing football last weekend. Oh, the life of a parent. ;-)
My kids keep me hopping, but I wouldn't trade them for anything. Anyway, just
wanted to let you know not to be looking for me tomorrow. Have fun, and take
lots of pictures. Should be the largest group of jeeps so far. Wish I could
be there.

Subject: Coke Ovens Run

We had over 40 vehicles for this one...WHEW. Linda did a great job
leading the group....which at times appeared like one big traffic
jam...but I think everyone had a good time, and the trail was well
suited for a large group. Coke Ovens were very interesting, and the
weather was great, as was the scenery. The only casualty was Nick's rear
tire, which decided to go flat. Luckily, some one had a repair kit
handy, and it held air for the rest of the trip. A good tire repair kit
is a smart thing to pack on runs...I'm gonna add it to my list of trail
accessories.

As I understand it, we had about 4 different clubs represented, and a
fifth (from Payson) that came along later w/ about 12 additional
vehicles, so actually, I guess there were over 50 vehicles.

After the Coke Ovens, Dan, Ed, Nick and myself(Doug) peeled off from
the group and did some exploring on some side trails. Found some
potentials for future runs.

During this side trip, we talked about needing a camping fix. Anyone
interested?? We could combine a trail run w/ an overnight...Cherry Creek
into the Sierra Anchas is one suggestion. Will be cool up there this
time of year, but that's part of the fun.

Wadda ya think??

I didn't expect such a large group! Most trips have 5-12 vehicles so don't let this one instance scare anyone away from organized trail rides. I glad things went as smoothly as they did. Those rocky ledges weren't half the problem I thought they would be.

I didn't expect the dues-and-a-halfs on the road out. My tailgunners, Ted and Loran in the Sammy were almost run down by one of them. Quick thinking on the part of both drivers; however, kept the situation from turning ugly!

A dues and a half is one of those big military cargo trucks, the ones with
like 6 wheels the size of small tractor tires. A Sammy is a Suzuki Samuri.

As I recall, there is some debate as to what they were built for. Some
say to produce coke, some say to make charcoal. My guess is
charcoal...but it's just a guess. They look just like charcoal kilns
I've seen in Ohio, and coke is made from coal...of which there is none
any where near the Gila. Also, the production of coke requires very high
temperatures, and I wonder if these could withstand that kind of heat.

I'd also be curious if there is more info out there on them.

Probably either coke or charcoal could be used to power

We are no better or worse than any other drivers. It's just that,
with our four inch suspension lifts, two inch body lifts, heavy duty lifting

Well, I had a lot of fun on my first trip. I met several other
first-timers, including Eric and family in their red XJ, and a couple of
guys from Luke AFB in their red and white YJs (If you read this, I can't
remember your names. I'm the guy in the Desert Sand TJ). I also met a
couple of people from the Dust (Dirt?) Devils club. I did get a chance to
meet Linda, and I talked to Doug B. just long enough to grill him about his
TJ upgrades. Hopefully I didn't irritate him too much.

My hats off to Linda for leading such a large group. I was suprised at how
smoothly it went given the number of vehicles. I look forward to a run with
just VJCers (or at least a lot less vehicles) so that some of us newcomers
have a better opportunity to become aquainted with the regulars from this
group.

Finally, I have a tip for those of you who have new Jeeps and want to get
past that urge to baby it because it looks and smells so new and clean
inside. Just go on a run to the Coke Ovens on a dry day with 40 other
vehicles, then leave your top down as you return to the highway via the
gunnery range, driving right in the middle of the convoy. Presto, your Jeep
is "broken in" like a well-oiled baseball glove.

Later,
Jeff H. ('99 TJ)

"Deuce-and-a-half" is what they called the older ones, since the capacity
was two and a half tons. The newer 5-tons I drove in Saudi and stateside
have a 5-ton off-road capacity, or can tow 10-tons. They can carry
10-tons on-road. Glad to hear you guys missed them. I saw one incident
of a 5-ton backing over a Dodge Colt, and it wasn't a pretty sight.

Yep, I did almost exactly the same thing a couple of years back with a group
on a Crown King run. I think it became a "true Jeep" that day. Looking
forward to meeting you and some of the other new members on one of the next
trips. I'm one of the folks who had to cancel just before Saturday's run,
otherwise it would have been an even LARGER group. Sounds like everyone had
fun, though. Later.

Later,
Jeff H. ('99 TJ)

Gee! All I did was roll up the windows and set the A/C to 70-deg! ;)

The dust was almost as thick as pea soup. If I had known the Natl Guard was
going to be out there we would have headed towards US60 instead!

Hi everyone, I am currently working on my Scrambler (not running yet)
and I have signed up for the All 4 Fun in Fairplay, CO this summer. I am
hoping my Jeep will be finished by then. Have installed the 304 & 999
transmission, am currently fighting the fuel tank to install the Holley
Pro Jection. Have a Ford 9" and Dana 44 standing by to be narrowed.
One thread at a time....

Welcome Ken! What part of town do you live in, and what are you driving? Ya
know, it seems like this group has grown so large that we should almost be
able to have a run going every weekend. How many people are currently in the
group Dan/Doug?

I received this link, and i tried it. Can anyone figure out how this trick
works? It seems to get it right everytime I try it. Any input would be
