Picked up an '03 TJ on Fri. with a few goodies on it. My first Jeep, so I'll be here often! Took it to Mexico this weekend, but didn't do much offroading. I didn't want my inexperience gettin' me stranded down there. Look forward to learning from you guys! Here's a couple pics and specs.

Do you live off of Riggs ? So do I, down by Higley though. Wasn't my Jeep though there are a few that I see on a daily basis on my way into big blue.
If you want to keep that Jeep looking nice and pretty, you may want to avoid this group. Otherwise there is a bunch of good wheeling nearby. There is usually something going on in the Florence area every weekend. Check out the trails section of the website - http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/forumdisplay.php?f=73
It's warming up now so many of the runs be going at night.
Box Canyon to the Coke ovens is a great first run for anyone with a new Jeep. http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=16960 (Ovens themselves are closed, but the trip is still a must run)
From there it will depend on how hard the disease hits you. Welcome

Yee Haww did someone say wrenching party? Let me at it LOL.
Oh and amber if you are reading this one, glad you and Ben installed the brakes properly, they really got a workout on Hackberry.
I had a wrenching party here to teach folks a few things. I let Amber and Ben re assemble almost everything except the pumpkin, they obviously did a fine job cuz I'm still alive!
Welcome to the group dude, we'll take good care of you, and might as well get out the check book now, your gonna need it when you get addicted to this party.

I live on Cooper south of Ocotillo. Little worried about the checkbook 'cuz I'm already putting the shopping list together. First thing I want to do is relocate the mirrors, but what I see seems like it moves them forward and won't be out far enough for visibility. Am I wrong on this?

In my experience mirrors on a jeep are tree food ;) Mine are never aligned any more since they keep getting banged on rocks and trees.
If you get some new brackets, mount them off of the doors in case you take the doors off.
Avoid spending too much money until you go wheeling several times, see what is working and what isn't. Talk to others who have wasted money and avoid the mistake. We have all done it.
My rig is going to stay the way it is for about a year then get new axles and the works, maybe even a 350 small block.
Will that be Debit or Credit?

You won't be able to use the passenger side mirror much do to it being blocked by the hard door. Mine did that and the soft doors do it now. If that doesn't bother you then it would be a good way to keep the mirrors for when the doors are off.

legally you only need one exterior mirror, I just relocated my drivers mirror and left the passenger mirror on the door.
Allen
04-25-2007, 11:11 PM
I just leave the mirrors on the doors and go for the PepBoyz $7 mirror in the top door bracket!
Works OK. It vibrated a little so I reinforced it a little...now it's great!
Wind_Danzer
04-25-2007, 11:13 PM
Yea technically on the mirror thing, you only need one back facing mirror so as long as you have a rear view one on the windshield, all is good. :)

Here we go. I'm looking at engine mods now. Best intake? Should I do a throttle body spacer? What's the best headers? I have an engine light on - I had it checked once and it was an emission code so I replaced the gas cap, but now it's back. Is this common? I guess that's a good start.
Roughian98TJ
04-25-2007, 11:21 PM
oh boy and it begins....I don't think intakes or anything really makes THAT much of a difference, especially spacers. I would spend your money on thing that really will be useful or make your vehicle more capable. the thing about those open filter intakes is that it doesn't protect your intake as well from water (not that your are going to sink your Jeep all that often out here, but I have done it). As for the header, don't worry about it, your exhaust manifold will crack soon enough and you'll have a good excuse to replace it. I've got a banks torque tube cause my manifold ripped itself apart (it might be my fault too). how many miles you got and what was the code?
Wind_Danzer
04-25-2007, 11:22 PM
Gas cap tight? Running rough now instead? That could be an O2 sensor.
Intake, I kinda am looking to modify my modified one by placing a filter under the cowl so I can have cooler air coming into the Jeep. My original cowl snorkel is having issue with the fender mod I just did.
Headers, don't go Borla. I replaced mine 2 times and both times they cracked. Not worth the money or the lifetime warentee on it. There are many different brands out there. 4 Wheelers sells Gibson and the new stock version. I went with the newer stock version and it's held up fine!!
Roughian98TJ
04-25-2007, 11:29 PM
oh yeah just to put mine out there its a sort of modified version of a ARB snorkel....the outside is the ARB and the inside is Home Depot ABS and a cone K&N filter. kind of long and obstructive but it works, though about adding an avenger or something but haven't decided if its worth it or not. But the Jeep is about to be retired to toy status cause I'm getting a diesel Jetta for a DD.

Let me know when you want to go wheelin...
And dont mind Brad, I've spotted him through some of the tougher trails without so much as a scratch... (The ones Jeff put on his fog light were NOT my fault!!)
Ok, that's not ENTIRELY true.. I did have to scratch a little.. :o
Also Brad's homophobic, and JohnP phobic... But that doesn't make him all bad. :D
He may just be worried you'll outwheel him after only hanging with me for a couple weeks... Or he really could be concerned for your life and safety and that of your Jeep...
Tough to tell, but trust me anyway...:D

As far as intake, I was hoping to gain a few mpg, since it is my daily driver right now. Probably a mute point since I'm running 33's.

LOL... and I was told once back to stock performance gearing on mine (went from 3.73 to 4.56 with 35" tires) I was going to save $$$'s on gas and better my MPG.
Yea, that's happening....
Roughian98TJ
04-25-2007, 11:37 PM
monday. and to be honest with all the tinkering with different things, I've never seen much of difference with gas mileage. I think gears would probably make the biggest difference. My Jeep now, The Purple People Eater, aka Barney (37s and 4.88s), gets about the same mileage(little bit worse cause its over geared) as Murphy (31s and 3.07s) did. lets face it we are driving vehicles with all of the aerodynamics of a 78' Kenmore refrigerator and a basically 30 year old motor, what do you expect.
corbas
04-25-2007, 11:40 PM
Good point, but now i'm going to have the visual of driving a refrigerator down the street.
Wind_Danzer
04-25-2007, 11:40 PM
Agreed, but I was seeing better mileage with my 3.73's and 35's then the 4.56's and 35's and the 4.56's were supposed to bring it back to stock when that was 3.73's and 28" tires.
Yes, there was a time... :D

umm the two digit numbers 35s or 37 or 28s or whatever is referring to tire size (you probable got that). the decimal numbers ie 3.73, 3.07, 4.56, 4.88 refers to the ring and pinion gears in the axles. its basically a ratio of how many time the drive shaft turns vs. the axle shaft. (that's pretty much as basic as I can make it). basically the larger the number the less revolution the axle shaft turns per revolutions of the drive shaft....is this making sense. So when you get bigger tires you now have a larger circumference so you don't need as many revolutions to maintain the same speed.

Welcome to the group. You picked up a well built Jeep, congrats! In my opinion, you should just drive it and wheel it as is for a while. Replace the O2 sensor, or whatever the emission issue is and then just put some miles on and get to know your new ride. Once you get to know it, it will tell you what it needs. Have fun and be safe! :)
