View Full Version : Florence on Monday, April 30, 2007

We'll have a 3" lift and 33's put on by tomorrow afternoon, and want to go play in Florence. We want to start out running the "Elvis Trail" but are up to suggestions. This does NOT have to be a kid-friendly run, as ours won't be there, but we are open to kid-friendly - whatever. Do need someone more experienced to lead. Start time is open, destination open....

If I'm done painting my house by Monday, I would love to go. I have run Elvis several times and it's a fun trail. Make sure you get some spare dana 35shafts though.:)

desertdawg

Unless you are really set on going to Florence Junction may I suggest Hackberry Creek? It's just about the same distance but east of Superior.
It's a beautiful and fun trail, plus it may not be accessable in the future when they start mining operations. :)

spare 35 shafts? I got home and thought about it....I think we do have one spare shaft now...and we'll go on whatever - I assume most of these obstacles have "go arounds" if something looks too hairy, right?

if you think of a better trail that you (or if anyone does, for that matter :) ) think we could hack with a all stock except 3" suspension lift and 33" baja claws, we are up for it...Everything is new so nothing will be boring.
We don't even really have to stick to any specific area.

I up for a run on the 30th! Hackberry Creek is a great trail, but it's not the same distance for us folks down in the creek here! You forget desertdawg that we live 19 miles from price road and 50 miles from BattleAxe Rd.

And I have all 4 shafts!!

I would love to re-try that hole I had to get winched out of on Elvis!...but then again I never got to finish Hackberry Creek either :(

amber.hodge

Hackberry Creek it is - We'll be coming from ** (house in *** is still under construction) need to determine rally point and time....

We'll be on channel 4 with our CB Radio

Allen

Regular rally point is some restraunt in superior - breakfast burritos! It has a "Rest Area" sign in front!

whats the name??

Could probably meet in Gold Canyon earyler and wheel out together!

We have to get the boy to either daycare or his dad's before we go...What time are you thinking? Gold Canyon would be a better for us....

Now as far as hackberry, you said you broke through there? are there different lines for some of the more extreme areas that we could go around if we need to? (husband's daily driver)

Allen
04-25-2007, 05:08 PM
Nope......wasn't me that broke! Someone did break and we took a shortcut off the trail towing him! He couldnt get it in 4WD for some reason!

It's not been too hot, but I'm thinking that wont last much longer, so a 8am departure from gold canyon would be nice. What time would you be able to be there??

You going to lead Mr Dawg?? I know where to start but I have yet to make the END of that trail, so your expertice would be welcome! I'll bring my GPS and record it!!

hmmm if I'm back from CA by monday, I'm in I've been wanting to run hackberry for a while. My on board air isn't working right now so no front locker but the rear is good to go......unless I get off my *** and fix it this week, anyone want to help?

Fire Ball
04-25-2007, 06:08 PM
We did hackberry today, there are a couple of really hairy obstacles. I had the least capable maybe with front locker and open rear on 33's and only had trouble in one place. Actually we all did, fully locked or not, but some good spotting and a little throttle yahoo and we all got through. Sorry you got out the winch for nothing Samdog ;)

Oh and we are out for the 30th, I have to work.

Too bad you guys couldn't have joined us today...we had and awesome run with some definitely challenging spots....have fun...it will take you all day to do the whole loop, we got half way in about 4-5 hours with a stop for lunch and the side trip to devils canyon....awesome view....:D

Yeah some people and their ring and pinons! J/K Kyle

I'm not a definite yet, but if I do go, Yes I will lead Allen.:)

Amber you should have no problem if you have good driving skills. You can compare most of the trail to the creek bed on Sunflower but uphill in certain areas. The lift will help you out tremendously and lockers are not necessary. We can take our time and get you through the rough spots and if it gets to rough for you we can exit out the road to 177. Just be prepared and make sure you have some kind of recovery points on your Jeep such as tow hooks. If you have spare axle shafts for the 35 that would be great just in case one breaks.

It's your call, so if you do not feel comfortable running this trail we can do something easier. You can also check out the trail report I posted in the moderate trail section to see if you are up to it.

The normal meeting spot in Gold Canyon is the Shell station. I don't remember the cross street. But it's on the north side of the road. I'm pretty sure it's the 2nd stoplight in Gold Canyon if'n you're eastbound on the 60.

Actually I believe Allen made it up with no lockers. But we can bypass it if you want.

Looks like I am going to try to make it, just hate the 2+ hour drive from Tucson. Will meet the group at the rest stop in Superior, or would the trail head/parking lot of the campground be better? Say around 8:30 - 8:45, not sure how long it takes to get to Superior from the Shell station. I will probably gas up in Superior at the local station, up the road (east) from the Rest Stop. See you all there, for now the Rest Stop.

In case anyone does not know where to find gold canyon (which is a town/city), mapquest directions to this location:
7138 E Highway 60
Apache Junction, AZ 85219, US

And it shouldn't be too much further east than here...I believe that address is to the shell station that has a mcdonalds in it that we are meeting at, but if that is a little off, it shouldn't be too far to keep going and shell should be somewhere close.

Shell/Mcdonalds/Conveinance store in Gold Canyon. Second traffic light, north side, US 60.

Meeting Time
0800 hrs

Lonnie will meet at the trailhead

We will be on CB Channel 4

If you miss us in Gold Canyon, proceed east on US 60 to Superior. Continue east on US 60 past Superior and the tunnel. Approximately 2 miles past the tunnel you will see the sign for Oak Flats campground. Make a right. Follow the dirt road to the right and turn left at the sign pointing to the campground. See you all in the morning!:)

Ouch! How did that happen?

you had to ask, I dropped it, picked my foot up cause I thought it was going to go straight down, it flipped around back and sliced right into the back of my ankle and into my achilles tendon. PS Columbia River M-16s are nice sharp knifes.

Yes, we got lost! :o We took a bypass on one event (the big rock mountain) and thought for sure that by the time we got done on "the bypass that never ends" that they would be done and waiting for us....so we passed them and got lost...but that wasn't the worst of it....I keep radioing for them to come back on the radio and we weren't getting a signal from them, so we figured we were way off from where they were....the whole time they could hear us - we just had the squelch setting adjusted wrong!
My husband's later reply was "that's my wife! she's not the smartest girl in the world but she sure is pretty" --- the only way he gets away with calling me a retard.

Anyway, we made it through some stuff we would have never thought we could ever do - thank you Mike for leading! We also had a great time putting faces to the names on this board - had fun meeting you all and promise we'll stop confusing Jim and Kevin (cuz they look identical right? )

Mike - please email those pictures to my cox.net email account when you can - I'm so excited to see them!

Oh, and Dan is the most wiley old codger I've ever met - I wish my dad was that cool! :)

This is blasphemy and I will not tolerate it. You go to the apology board and you apologize for your hurtful and just outright wrong comments towards the Red Wings. Everybody knows that the Wings are going to win it. They are the best and the only competition is the Canadians and most of them play for the Wings anway!! You know it, I know it - we all know it - you go apologize you teller of lies!!!!!

Thanks for the call Amber and Ben to let me know you had a great trip today. I can't help but feel that I'm a little responsible from saving you from the abbyss of being a non-jeep owner.

BTW, Tony Stewart will win the Championship, not trying to start anything:eek:

Thanks to all who came out to play today! Especially Lonnie who came all the way from Tucson! It was great meeting you Amber and Ben, hopefully we can run some more trails together soon. You guys did great today. Although it was a bit funny how Amber was sending out May Day's thinking you guys were lost. I thought they taught you ARMY dudes how to find your way through the wilderness.:D

Great fun today!:)

Mike - thank you so much for getting us into this! We have had so much fun - and are totally addicted. Since they don't make a methadone for jeeping, I'm sure we are hooked for life! :) We might as well try to buy stock at 4wheelers because I see a lot of our money going to them in the future!!:D

Hackberry will always be one of my favorite trips. I had to work overnight and then head out after work. Got there as everyone was loading up. STarted the trail having been up for 26 hours. I lost count of how long it was by the time i got home.

Roger and i had PM'd most of the night since he was 3rd shift at the time and was gonna head out from Tucson and meet us there. Was the second time meeting him and the last time wheeling with him. yeah Hackberry is great! Ill have to run it again before the area is closed.

Dan you know i got a date with that little ledge that i couldnt make that time. Ill be kickin its ace next time :D

Had a great time yesterday, it was nice seeing some of the old folks that I've wheeled with and haven't seen in a long time and met some great new folks. Weekday runs are always fun, especially for us ol retired farts. Hope to see you all on the trails again.

No problem - was great to meet you too. I hope that we can take the kids out soon for a run - would love to have you lead a tucson area run - that would have to be on a Sat or Sun - post up any weekend except for the first of any given month and we will likely be able to show! :)
