Looking at these Alloy D44 seals

Now I have a 80 something J10 axle..... just thinking these are nice and would help in the upkeep of some "potentially" when I get alloy shafts for the D44....

My feeling on these is like a fence...does a fence keep "it" out or does a fence keep "it" in? And the answer is: BOTH!

That said, my thoughts are: we live in a desert, rare mud or rain and they may well work out here. I will let some others chime in on this.

Shock boots...who runs them and why don't people run them?

not sure if the new design is out yet. pm stu and ask him his ideas on them. i asked a while back and he said they were redesigning them and to wait if at all. I think there are better places that you could spend BUT for the added security of the thousands you spent on your axle you might as well :D

I tried to get some for my Waggy 44 but they only fit Rubicon 44's.

From a discussion on cjoffroad.com...

"The axle seals fit in the axle housing but prevented the axle from going all the way in because of the u-joint hitting the seal housing."

"You have to get a set of internal tube seals. I thought about getting those seals till I replaced a joint and found that there is very little space between the end of the tube and the joint and from the pic I seen of them, they stick pretty far out of the tube. If I remember correctly, JP magazine used internal seals when converting a rear dana 60 to a front set-up. Issue April 2005, page 52. It says they used Seals-it seals that were $69 bucks a piece."

So far I'm not running any outer seals and I've not had any issues. The inner seal prevents crud from getting into the housing and diff fluid from getting out.

Most the time the shock boots are not long enough to fit the shock fully extended.

I have a set from Alloy USA installed in my D30 axle. They are the most current design (I think they are on revision 3 now). I've experienced no problem with mine. They keep the dirt and grit out of the tubes.....which means you won't be sliding your splines through that stuff just before they slip into the differential.

http://www.stu-offroad.com/axle/usaseal/usaseal-1.htm has the details and my comments on them.

I had trouble with mine after less than a month. I noticed on the trail that the passenger side seal was spinning in the axle tube. I also noticed that the rubber seals had pushed out of the billet part, and was up against the axleshaft yoke on both sides.

I had not RTV'd them in, but there were no instructions provided, so I didn't think that step was necessary. Only one of them was spinning, so I'm still not sure about that step.

Shortly after I found my problem, Stu posted his write-up and I noticed the outer snap ring, which my seals did not have.

I removed them and sent these pictures along to my Vendor (RedRock4x4) and AlloyUSA. AlloyUSA promptly sent me new ones, but I have yet to install them. It turns out I got a set of the older style. I'm assuming they were revision 2 because I had the black plastic inner sleeve rather than the twin o-rings, but I did not have the outer snap ring.

Here's what I found when I removed them. The rubber had melted to the axleshaft and made a huge sticky mess.
