Like is says I really want to get out of town. Lets meet at the Conoco across from Fort McDowell Casino a couple miles North of the instersection of 87 and Shea at 9 am on Saturday morning. Then start wheeling Payeatt draw on Saturday about at lunch time. Then on Sunday we will run Lower Skull Crusher. T.C. will be our trail leader for this trail. I am camping at the entrance to Payeatt Draw trail. I plan on coming home on Monday after breakfast.

There are challenging trail but they are absolutely gorgous. I will say these are rating a solid 4.0. You must have lockers F+R and 35" to do lower skull crusher. Payson will be perfect weather this time of the year. There should hopefully be a lot of downtime in between the runs for relaxing. Also I am sure I will run in to town to pick up supplies and stuff. Anyway come out for a good time even if you cant make it for the whole thing :)

I found out that smasher canyon is about 70 miles away from payson so we can either drive over to it and then drive back the same day or we can drive there and just camp someone there also. I have someone offering to lead us on this as well.

OK so the second trail I would like to do is skull crusher. From what I found out this trail is in Payson or right near it. I think this would be a better second run so if anyone would like to lead that day or knows where it is that would be great.

Also I have thought about it and I thinking leaving early Saturday morning and getting up there by lunch to early morning might work better.

I would be down for running two trails in Payson instead of driving into cottonwood. It is looking more and more like I am going to be able to go if the Jeep is running to up to par.

I am not sure if I could run upper. My goal this weekend is to wheel and relax and just enjoy the outdoors. I am in no rush to get through any of these trails. I would like to run skull crusher, if there are parts that are too hard I wont run it. I am in no rush but I am down to check out the trail and if we get done really early we could run payette draw again then. I am not picky just out to have a good time :)

I dont think I will be able to do the back part of skull crusher right now but am willing to give the front a try, or at least walk it. I think I ok on 4.0 with my current set up, but may be early next spring I will be better equiped.

Are you open in the front? You're profile doesn't say anything other than a detroit rear.

You need a BUILT rig to do Upper Skull Crusher. Lower isn't too bad as there are lots of bypasses and the road is next to the wash.

I guess I should update my profile some :)

I am locked front and rear with a longer wheelbase vehicle, body damage doesnt bother me. Upgraded axles, hydro assist, crawl ratio of 223:1, 38.5 TSL/SX, and I am sure other stuff.

I am here to have fun. If I can't do upper skull crusher then I cant do it. I just want to have fun camping and wheeling some good trails. I think Payette draw and the lower half of skull crusher is rated at 4.0.

That's almost exactly my old setup but I didn't have 60s f/r so I opt'd not to go for it. You can definitely make it (you will likely need a winch too, jfyi) but if you're running less than 1T running gear, bring spares.

Have fun and post pics. It's a great run.....

Ya upper Crusher is pretty much buggy territory, lower can be handled pretty much by what you have slow going though as its still tough.....I know it's kind of a late issue but some of my friends are doing it april 28th at 9am if your not doing anything your more than welcome to check out the trail with us in the am,if not I will show you upper and lower and you can decide ....T.C.

I wish I could have pre ran it but I am currently broken. I broke rear R and P about 3 weeks ago. I am just waiting for the new part. I would still greatly appreciate it if you could lead the run on Sunday morning to lower skull crusher.

Also slight change of plans. I think it would be better to leave Saturday morning to head up there and get there at lunch time as opposed to leaving Friday night after work. I hope this allows more people to make the runs.

If I were you, Kevin, I wouldn't run it. You are going to need a winch and a few spares. Also, it concerns me that you are breaking Ring and pinions. Perhaps too much tire and too much low gearing?
Skull Crusher is a trail you want to be on with people who have run it before.

But while you are in Payson, and running lower Skull Crusher, I'd suggest just taking a walk up Upper Skull Crusher, just so you can see it first hand. It's a good hike, and it'll help you decide if you really wanna try it.

I should be able to make it for a day trip. I could be up there by 10:00. That would give a little more time for the trail and still be able to get back to the valley before it gets to awful late for those that won't be able to stay the night up there.

Excellent point Bill,Kevin, i or anyone else is not against anyone of you giving it a try,I hope you saw my post on Upper Crusher and the pic's from last weekend it will kind of give you an idea of what the trail is like and from the last water fall there is a good three foot hole of water and a climb out of there that is about 12 ft.If you don't have a winch i do not see how you are going to get out of there as on this run there are no bypasses,if you want to walk it or do lower i would be glad to show you either.....would not mind seeing you on this trip either Bill as all are killer runs in cooler climates ..Please keep in mind this is a six hr run even with nothing going wrong...T.C.:)

It is nice forest road all the way up to payeatt draw camp site. I would be willing to guess that skull crusher is trailer friendly as well. Payeatt draw isnt really a loop but there is a road that runs parallel with the whole thing. I am not sure if skull crusher loops.

Is it true that there is an 'easy' route and a 'hard' route on Payette draw? I heard there is an upper and lower trail that kinda intersect each other at times.

Skii4x4
05-16-2007, 03:09 PM
There is a road that runs along the whole Payette draw. You can bypass any hard obstacle that you do not want to do. There are bypasses the whole trail. The bypass road is just a normal forest service road.

Is there a good time line for Saturday. I'm thinking a day trip would work for me. If we leave at 9, are we wheeling by, say 1030 and done by 430 if all goes well? Just trying to figure out when we'd be home Saturday night.

Also, can you give direction to the trail head, so I know where I'm going. Any concern about the fire up there?

Digger

I was there for the XJ run/camp, it's awsome, bedrock for crawlin and forest trails run along for bypass. It was dry up there, with the fire burning by Christ. Creek I'm thinking there will be fire restrictions. It was hot there, bring extra ice and water. I might be there for Memorial weekend.

I am not too sure about the timeline but I will try my best. Leave around nine. By the time we get to the trail head I am thinking about noon. This is including people coming late, slow vehicles driving up there, stuff like that. Then the trail depending on how many people may take about 4-5 hours at most. I dont remember it being that long. Then your drive back.

Also the fire that is up there is supposed to be contained by 5/22/2007 as on a government fire website of some sort.

With a ride up from valley, ride to camp, and a run, is a full day. If anyone wants to make a day trip, figure on getting back to valley in the dark.
The trail isn't all that long just time consuming if you want to challenge the good spots. many different lines the whole way.

On Sunday we will be running Lower Skull Crusher. We will be meeting TC to lead us to the trail at about 9 am on Sunday. We will be meeting at the Basha's parking lot at the intersection of 87 and 260. If you are coming up for sunday only please make sure you post up or pm me so I know to wait for you.

I think there will be a bunch of people coming up for Saturday and then turning around. My guess is probably 3-4 of us camping for the weekend.

Feel free to join if you want.

When are you leaving from the trail head?

Are these directions to the trail head correct?

Payette Draw class ratings are from 2.5 to 5+
lower is a solid 3 and middle is a definate 4 Upper is a 5+

Take 87 to the 260 split in Payson. pass through the light and continue on about three miles. Once passed the roundy round you'll see Huston Mesa rd on the right. Turn right onto Huston Mesa rd. Follow Huston Mesa rd past the Shoo fly indian ruins. about 1 mile from the Ruins is a dirt rd that cuts off to the right as the main rd heads left. Follow this dirt road up and over the saddle back and across the second wash crossing will be a small brown sign or trail marker. I can't remember the number off the top of my head...
make the right turn and drop into the was as you cross over. Left is the 3+ and right is a fun section that takes you back to the maind dirt road.

Have fun and be safe.
