Hi Folks,

For those who know me ... I am now in Ashland, Kentucky polishing up my
professional skills. I have an assignment to prepare a full fledged MS Power
Point presentation. I will proudly do this on the topic of Jeeps and 4
wheeling.

Can some one refresh my memory on the trail rating (1-5) descriptions. I
appreciate any help, and of course, I will be promoting 4 wheeling.

Thanks,

Eric

Here is the Red Rock 4-Wheelers
Trail Difficulty Ratings

1 All weather road; 4WD not needed.

1 1/2 Graded road; 4WD may be needed in poor weather.

2 Unimproved or rarely graded road. 4WD or extra clearance needed at times,
with no special driving skills required.

2 1/2 Road rarely maintained, 4WD, good clearance, low gears often needed,
with some extra care and a bit of driving experience useful.

3 Road in difficult terrain, rarely maintained, 4WD, good clearance, and low
gears essential, with some driving skill and daring required.

3 1/2 Road in difficult terrain, probably maintained only by occasional
users. Excellent stock truck or utility vehicle required, with considerable
driving skill and daring needed.

4 Trail either never bladed or badly eroded. Stock vehicles are in jeopardy.
Modifications for improved off-road performance and top driving skills
needed.

4 + We can hardly improve on the original description written a few years
ago by Jack Bickers: "with driving by World Class Yahoo Jeepers not much
concerned with vehicle durability or personal safety." It is common to have
as many as 10 percent of the vehicles experience major mechanical failures
(gears, axles, driveshafts) on these trails.

Hi Eric! The following is quoted from Scott Deuty's book "The Four Wheel
Drive Trails of Arizona, Vol. 1," COPYRIGHT 1996:

"1. Easiest; Usually a graded dirt road. These roads can usually be traversed
by a high clearance two wheel drive vehicle such as a truck or van. Four
wheel drive vehicles with reduced air pressure in the tires will be able to
provide better handling and comfort on trails rated with a 1. Generally, four
wheel drive will not be needed unless it rains or snows. Typically, these
trails can be run in 4WD High.

2. Intended for those with little or no experience and a stock vehicle. Four
wheel drive traction will be required on these roads. Sometimes, rough
terrain will require the use of low range four wheel drive (if so equipped) in
order to provide the best ride comfort. Typically, these trails can be run in
4WD High.

3. Intended for a driver with little or no experience driving a modified
vehicle OR Experienced drivers with a stock vehicle. You will most likely be
using low range on portions of a trail rated with a 3. In addition modified
vehicles should have skid plates and modifications such as a lifted suspension
or increased axle articulation. Stock tires work OK on 3 rated trails,
however those with increased tire diameter and height and a more aggressive
traction pattern will do better on a 3 rated trail.

4. Requires Modified Vehicle and Experienced Driver. These two elements were
listed as Modified Vehicle OR Experienced Driver in a 3 rating now they are
listed as Modified Vehicle AND Experienced Driver. On a trail such as this
you will experience obstacles such as rocks, ruts, off camber grades, and
difficult hill climbs. In addition to the modifications in a 3 rating, it is
recommended that at least one axle in the vehicle have a traction aiding
device such as a limited slip or "locking" differential. These trails are run
in 4WD Low.

5. Hardest; Don't even think about it with a stock vehicle or if you
inexperienced. You will be hating life and me as well! These trails require
the ultimate in traction and wheel travel. In addition, body damage may occur.
If you have a three inch lift (at the very least), skid plates, larger tires,
traction aiding devices in both differentials, and don't care if the brush
eats your paint at least your vehicle may be able to make it. It is now down
to the question of your experience in properly placing tires. YOU SHOULD HAVE
ENOUGH EXPERIENCE TO TRAVERSE A TRAIL RATED 4 WITH EASE BEFORE ATTEMPTING A
TRAIL RATED WITH A 5."

Hope this helps. See you on the trail soon.

If that's the definition of road rage then about 95% of Arizona drivers have
it, with the possible exception of the Sun City/Sun Lakes residents who
always use their turn signals (even when not turning) and never drive more
than 25 (even in the left lane). I tend to take it easy in our Jeep since it
doesn't handle or brake anywhere near as well as our other car.

Thought you might enjoy checking this one out. It is an internet survey
being taken on road rage by Leon James, a professor of traffic
psychology at U of Hawii-Manoa. According to James, drivers of SUVs
tend to be more aggressive -- quicker to tailgate, speed or change lanes
without signalling. I don't know about you, but my ZJ would be too
easily recongnized for me to get away with doing things like that so I
do the speed limit, use my signals, and try not to do anything really
stupid!

OK. How does Feb 13 sound to those interested?

As a reminder, this trail has a class 4 spot, that really requires a
lift and decent tires. A limited slip rear end (or locker) would
certainly help with the rock crawling.

Nick,

I forgot another great source for trails. Arizona Highways magazine! They have
been running articles on back country trails since 1993. I think they have these
articles on-line at their website. I know their hiking trail articles are
there.

I plan on a trip to Pueblo Devol some time later this year. According to the
AZ Highways article, this trail has a hill that is as slippery as a greased
flagpole. Well, it isn't that steep, and the trail isn't as difficult as they
say it is, but there are a few spots that are pretty interesting.

Hi all,

The Copperstate 4-wheelers will be having their 11th annual Treasure Hunt
on March 12, 13 & 14. Base camp is a Winkelman City Park. Registration is
$40 which includes two dinner tickets. Camping is $3 a night. This is a fun
family oriented 4x4 event. The Treasure Hunt usually has a theme. Last year
it was Pirates (that's where the skull and crossbones on my ZJ came from), the
year before it was Raiders of the Lost Arc. The trails they use for the event
can be driven in a stock 4x4.

Winkelman City Park is where the older part of Winkelman used to be before it
got washed away a few years ago. It is on the bank of the Gila River. If the
mine is still operating, you can watch them dump on the slag heap. At night it
looks like a volcano erupting.

This is Valentine's weekend. If I spend a day four wheeling, my sweetie might
make sure I'm sleeping in my Jeep for a week!

How about the weekend before or after?

They had a good article a few months back on the Cherry Creek Road which
parallels the Sierra Ancha Wilderness. Probably a class 3. I would like to try
this. It may be long enough for an overnight camping expedition.

You can also occasionally find articles in various 4x4 magazines or Jp
Magazine.

I've done this, and was going to suggest it for this spring. It'd be an
excellent overnite. This is a VERY scenic trail... light class 3...fine
for stock. Camping up in the Sierra Anchas is quite good...up in the
pines. There's one spot I know that's good for a number of tents...next
to a nice stream.

How's March sound??? Of course, I'd go any time. I enjoy cold weather
camping, so sooner works for me.

I do get Arizona highways and have for years. I looked through my back issues and did see some 4wheel trips. It seems though that most everything they feature is up north or atleast 2-3 hours drive. I get to that kind of driving usually once a month though. I wouldn't mind doing an overnighter either.

Did anyone see the 4 wheel trail story on todays, outdoors section of the newspaper? Doug, ya that trail I mentioned had Camping on the Cave creek highway side. North I thought? There is actually a park there at the river that you pull into. Not real populated.

Class 1 - Improved dirt road...no problem for any vehicle. No 4wd needed.

Class 2 - Easy - ok for stock Jeep, some 4wd may be needed, but not
necessary.

Class 3 - Moderate - 4wd required; w/ some low range; good all terrain
tires also needed. Suspension mods desirable, but not generally
necessary.

Class 4 - Hard - Low Range; suspension mods required; limited slip in the
rear required; lockers desirable. Damage may occur to body or drivetrain.

Class 5 - Very Hard - Oh my Gaud....Low gears, lockers front and rear,
winch, heavily modified vehicle, and a little crazyness all required.

Hope that helps, Eric.
