Well it looks like I am going to get to start working on my flatty again.. It has a d44 with one piece axles and detroit/ d30 combo.. But both with 3:54 gears. My question is what is the biggest thick gears you can get? I know they make 4:88 but really want 5"38's.
Also can anyone give me a ball part on gears and install?
Thanks
Keith

The highest numerically speaking you can go with a d30 is 4.88. Your d44 will go much deeper.

Thanks for the reply... Guess I'll have to do 4:88's then.. Just figured the d30 would go lower as the d25/d27's came with 5:38's
What's the going rate for gears and install now?

Incorrect. That stands for TJ short pinion/crush sleeve and YJ/XJ Rev gears. The standard D30 (CJ's, Bronco's and Scouts) WILL go 5.38. For the D44, 4.88 is the deepest they go on a thick gear, but you can use a 5.38 gear and a ring gear spacer. It is done quite a bit. Any questions, Please feel free to call me at the shop. I can give you a quote then also, If you like. :D

The Dana 25/27 shares only the diff cover with the 30. The ring gear is a different size, carrier breaks are different and bearings are different. I know of only one aftermarket gearset available for the D27 and its a 4.27 ratio. Just built one a few weeks ago......:D
