Monday, April 23 meeting at 11am, Butcher Jones Rec Area, Saguaro Lake. Leave about 11:20 towards Cove 1. Just before dropping into the wash to Cove 1, overlooking the 'play hills' area is the abandoned TJ. We will be extracting the wreck in conjunction with Tonto Natl Forest to the B Jones parking lot. This time we do not have to drag the thing up any hills. Mostly level tow surface and one short drop into the wash.
We would like to have at least 4 Jeeps/Trucks, lockers would help but not absolutely necessary. Anyone and everyone is welcome to help, watch, photograph or point and laugh :p . Remember to bring plenty of water. :)

No, but it has to be towed DOWN one. That can be equally exciting as we learned last time. :D
As posted in the other thread, I can't make it as I gotta work. I hope everyone has fun.

Here are some pictures of the extraction of the TJ at the Coves....
Seems that since DavidC was last out there someone tried to dump it into the
ravine... possibly to steal parts..

Did anybody notice where my line broke? I thought it was in the middle. I don't remember if I wound it back in prior to that picture being taken or not.

Lay out the piece with the hook to get an idea of the length. Wife said she thought it was at rug, Jeep side.

Well I guess it doesn't matter because I know what I did wrong now. I installed the line on wrong, which caused severe abrasion on the line.:o

Mission accomplished. Despite someone's efforts to roll it into the ravine, we managed to drag the wreck to the parking lot in 2 hours. I was afraid someone else was gonna mess with the wreck before we could get to it. And sure enough somebody flipped it upside down and stole the rear driveshaft, all 4 coil springs even though they were ruined  , the 2 front factory tow hooks, windshield light brackets and the 1" recvr mini-hitch. Luckily it did not roll down the ravine so we just had to bring it up a few feet and flip it back over. The only damage we suffered was Desert Dawg's synthetic winch rope which broke. I had brought a tow bar with me that I wanted to try but it just didn't fit right, so we wrapped a long chain around the front of the frame/bumper and good old tow strap to me and Desert Dawg out front with a tow strap to me. The 2 of us had enough power to drag it all the way to the lot, only one hill to go down which turned out easy to handle. Kevin was out front of us scouting the route and Walt, Roxanne and Glen followed us and collected anything that came off in transit. I was surprised how well the TJ held together against the extreme abuse of being dragged like that. Vehicles in the past have nearly disentigrated losing major undercarriage parts and even the entire engine. This Jeep stayed intact and the best part is so did our Jeeps! No damage this time other than the winch rope.
So thank you to Desert Dawg, Walt D & Roxanne, Kevin (Rokcrlr), Glen and Andrea for the help on this project. I had planned on posting my pics that Andrea took with my crappy camera but it looks like I have managed to erased them somehow. I just have not had very good luck with electronic devices lately. I think Roxanne, though, did a fine job with her pics and commentary. And one more thanks goes out to Robin with the Tonto FS who seemed to drop everything to help us right away, getting us an approval to move a confirmed stolen vehicle in about 24 hrs. It's great to have the Forest Service work with us like they do.
There are more abandoned/burned out vehicles scattered in the Coves area and Sycamore creek with new ones deposited frequently. I have learned first hand the immense amount of effort it takes to remove these and clean up afterwards. I hate to see the waste and the ugliness left behind. I don't understand the mentality (or the lack of) that causes someone to steal/torch/abandon a perfectly good car and endanger our desert with fire. I want to stop this from happening but it seems any real solution that I can think of is against the law(:mad: ). So I must direct my efforts to cleanup when I can. Thanks to everyone that helps in this capacity and to everyone that lends support in any way.
