View Full Version : Jeep run okay for kids

As embarrassed as i am to say this, we have never been on a jeep run. Are they kid friendly at all? (5 year old child) We'd like to go on one, but I don't know much about which ones to go to or which ones would be a safe environment for children.....

"the only stupid question is the one you don't ask"....or the one you ask 80 times.

I always take my 2 and 4 year old 4 wheeling, and they love it. In my Opinion There are many trails around that you can safely take your kids on. Wheeling is a family sport.

I always take my kid or kid (s) with me on trail runs bothe girls 12 and 2. The trail rating would depend on your build.

Ps. I take the wife on the 3.5 and kids on the 4.0's!

Okay, I wanted to make sure I wouldn't be the only one there with kids and that it was something safe to do. Remington is just like his mama - a rush junkie, so he'd love it. I know my husband would turn the passenger air bag off, put him up front and put mom (me) in the back with the cooler. He doesn't trust my off road ability, although I've done some light off road driving when he's been out of town and everything was just fine!!

So which runs that are coming up would be good for kids/family and aren't too trecherous? (1999 wrangler no lift but oversized 31" tires with great tread)

Amber what I would suggest is to post up in the easy trip section that you want to run a trail but would like to have someone else lead. Also post up the specs on your Jeep so we know what trails to suggest. There's alot of trails you could do that the kids would have a blast on. Before you know it you'll catch the fever and want to do more.

By the way do you know Jim Ashworth. He was the Command Sgt. Major out at the Papago Guard Unit. He just retired not too long ago. Good friend of mine.:)

Sergeant Major Ashworth used to give me a ride to work on his Goldwing when I was a specialist about 3-4 years ago after a car accident! Yes, I know him! He is super good people...I see him at least monthly at work!!

Well, we are advertizing the jeep to sell, but since we don't have to sell it, we're sticking pretty firm on asking price - if we catch the fever, it will make it all that much harder to sell.

Tell Jim that SGT Hodge said hello and if he doesn't recognize say "martin was her maiden name"

That's funny because he called me last night asking about jeeps for sale and I read him the ad on your Jeep. Small world!:)

I'm going over to his house Saturday night, I'll tell him you said hello.:)

Here are a couple pics of the ends of a few trails with the 4 year old. Been out for 10-12 hours on each of these runs:D In the second pic, it was so dusty coming out of Cottonwood Canyon RD, her drool turned to mud!!!

Something similar in all these.........

Amber, you may want to hold off on going on a Jeep run... If you do, you will likely no longer be selling the Jeep... Almost guaranteed.

Its an addition and it only takes once. I would suggest sticking with Crack Cocaine... It seems to be less addicting than Jeepin.

DUDE! My wife happened to be with me when I stopped at 4 Wheelers today. I picked up a set of stock RUBICON axles for spares, and Mike in service asked if I had a front axle from a Rubi? I shot him a look, and the cat was outta the bag! Regina said she didn't even WANT to know what it was gonna cost! BUSTED.:o

See my wife just says, "Yes" to anything I want. Because she knows when she wants a house mod I wont say "No." Because if I do, then its "No Jeep mod for you!" Now she wants Granite Counter Tops. It's a vicious cycle.

I have been taking my 8 year old grandson since he was ?? under 2 years old, he is now the best spotter of the group and I'm sure if he was taller would be the best driver. He has been to Moab and Las Cruces and most of the trails in Southern Arizona. Plus the little ones can manage to sleep just about anywhere under any conditions as Lances pictures show. Heck yes take the little ones on trail runs. They have a blast and enjoy the same things we do when we go out, plus you find they are fun to talk to and a lot smarter than you thought.

Use sunscreen.....take plenty of water, lunch and snacks...and a camera. :D Watch for snakes....they are out this time of year...and have a good time..

There will be people airing down their tires and disconnecting swaybars...if you want to do that...bring what you'll need toolwise.

I still haven't been able to get any answer on rally point and time on the Sunflower Mines thing...Thinking about going camping tonight and then meeting tomorrow but don't know where or when...
As for snakes, Ben was out at the range in florence messing around with a john deere tractor doing some work and had to kill one with the front bucket yesterday...3 foot rattle snake...I'm sure he'll be very watchful after that.

if you do post a run make sure you mark it KID FRIENDLY so people wont later complain about foul mouths or drinking or any other hooliganisms.

I don't know that it is posted, but this run will be KID FRIENDLY as far as our jeeps are concerned as we will have Remington in tow (our 5 year old, not our rifle)

Back on topic, one thing that bugs me is when people say, "I can't do anything because I can't take the kids along." Nice to see not everyone has that idea, I asy bring em out and have some fun!

I grew up in farm country and we drove vehicles before we were 10 years old.

I grew up in Chandler, and dad made us wait until we were 12.

Foul mouth?? Uh...F bombs left and right would constitute as foul for us with the kids...or b**** when not referring to your dog that just welped.

Actually it was with family and some of his friends. Stereos blasting hip hop full tilt, drinking beer and driving like idiots plus some crap I won't get into.

If that's what you are into, no problem, I'm just more into slow, peaceful, enjoy nature and relax.

:D WHOOOOO HOOOO! :D

Just got back from our first jeep run...could not find Jeeper05 (what happened to you today? ), but met up with Mike CJ 77......

This was supposed to be one last "hurrah" with the jeep before selling it...somehow by the end of the run we decided we were going to pull money out of savings to pay down the jeep and refinance it PLUS get a 3" lift kit, 33" mickey thompsons and put diamondplating around the outside with a winch on the front....!!!

How did this happen?

The boy loved it except he was upset we brought out a bunch of MREs for our food - The old "If this is good enough for mom and dad, its good enough for you" thing didn't work....But at least he had fun...And he even ran around fielding brass at one of our stop points (it is Earth Day, after all)

The jeep did pretty well, we got through a rock garden that was about a 3.5 or so and were able to complete the whole sunflower loop...the rock garden taking a couple tries sold me on the lift kit and tires...

WE'VE BEEN BITTEN!!!

Best thing I ever did was buy the wife her own jeep, the only problwm is when she starts to really drive the jeep off road they sometimes end up being a better driver and put you to shame. The other down side is if you think one jeep is eating your wallet try having two sucking it dry. I want 35's, I want a cage, I want a winch it never ends.;) But its a good thing. :D

Ben wants to eventually get me the new 4 door jeep but he said we're keeping that one on the street...after I went for the lift, tires, shocks, etc...he started naming off 8 or 9 other things he wants...at least he works 2 jobs...We decided all of the money from his second job can go towards maintenance, parts and mods for the jeep but family expenses come first. He's going to let me drive one of these times....for now, I'll just stick to outshooting him! :)
