We made the attempt last november to go from Rocky point to El Gulfo. We made it about half way. . . we think. It was a very cool trip. We were unfamiliar with a route. . . just thought we would follow the coast/train tracks till we found it. It is neat to get into the "backcountry" of Mexico. Wish I could come along. I have to work that weekend.

This could be a little soon for me. Do you have details on camping, etc? It is my understanding that rocky point is very busy during Cinco De Mayo, you know since it's a mexican holiday...

I'll report back. Thanks!

I don't want to camp in RP, it will be too busy. I'd like to camp in El Golfo Friday night, and camp again en route to RP Saturday night

Tentative.

Working on the wife.

Will be bringing 3/4 ton GMC 4X4 on 35's. (Think multiple coolers ;) )

Your plan sounds good, camping Fri in Elgolfo, Sat enroute , if we could camp here, I think the boss would be in:
10448

Sunday find pavement and head home.

Iam pretty sure were in as well. What time do you want to leave on Fri? Looks like the trip is aprox. five hours so that should leave plenty of time for swimming, exploring, ect.

Let me know if I can help with your trip. With the new highway coming in to that area, the remote experience will be gone in a few years...

Navigation through the salt flats can be difficult and be careful driving along the RR tracks in the rainy season, well, if the road is flooded it becomes impassible and you will need to drive ON the tracks :)

Anytime in the afternoon is good for me. I'll probably be off work by 12p. Sound s like the timeline will be very flexible. Should be plenty of time for recreation.

The wife and I want to come but we need a little more info...

How long in the trip from PHX to El Golfo? (I'm actually in Casa Grande area)

Have the new passport requirements kicked in yet?

When do you plan on heading back Sunday? (I have work in the afternoon and might be able to get coverage for it)

I'm guessing 5 hours from Phoenix to Elgolfo. Its 3 to Sonoyta and I'll say around 2 hours to Elgolfo but thats a WAG at best. You do not need a passport for re-entry yet. Still it's a good idea to bring your birth certificate although I have yet to need anything other than my DL. I haven't decided when I'll head back on Sunday. Earlier is better; its going to be slow getting back across the border that day.

Sounds good. I'm still trying to get coverage for work on Sunday. If I can't I can't go.

I would like to know who is in on this run as soon as possible. If you have plans to go post up here or give me a call 623-628-1379. I have a surplus of camping gear if anyone needs to borrow some holler.

Ok, I have coverage for work, so I'm good to go with the wife as long as we don't start too early. She has work in Ahwatukee Friday morning. We live near Casa Grande, so we'd like to join up when you come through if that's ok. I don't remember, when on Friday you were wanting to leave.

Do I need to buy Mexican auto insurance?

Consider Mexican insurance mandatory. In case of a wreck, if you can't show proof of finacial resposibility you go staight to jail until you can. I don't think you want to spend any time in a Mexican jail!!!:D

We can get Mexican insurance in Yuma on the way down. I'll be off work at 330p on Friday and would like to be on the road 4p-430p. We can meet up at the McDonalds in Gila Bend; looks to be about an hour from you. Then it's another 2 hours to San Luis, then on to El GOlfo. I hope to be there by 8pm.

Sounds good. We can meet at the McD's in Gila Bend!

I found a good rate for the insurance online at www.motormexico.com $50 for 3 days with full coverage including emergency medical evacuation.
