Anybody wanna go do somethin' tomorow/today Sunday the 10th.???

I don't really want to hang around here.

I'm on the NW side and up for a little off roading. How about the Table Mesa
Road. I missed it when y'all did it a while back.

time were you thinking for table mesa? Something closer would be cool to,

have some really complicated stuff going on tomorrow so it's gonna be kinda

Hey, between 12 and 1 is fine with me. I'll out of here probably early. If I
don't I'll be dodging frying pans.... if ya know what I mean.

Anyone else want to join up?

Hmmmm. I think I'll just find refuge in front of the TV instead of going

Hope no one minds me posting this here, I ran across it in the Jeep

Her name is MIKELLE BIGGS and she is 11 years old. The Jeep seen that
may be a possible witness is described by the Mesa Police Department as
"copper Jeep CJ with a light-colored top." The area is Mesa, AZ, around
Gilbert and Southern. It would have been around 6PM, Saturday, January
2, 1999.

Actually, one of the (many) reasons we formed this group was because there
really isn't a lot of information out there. So AZ-VJC is a way to exchange
trail information.

Here are some resources:

http://members.aol.com/Revolvr/az_backcountry_jeep.htm

This is my site of course, and I started it to document the trails I know of.
Course, that's the problem with it, it only has trails I've been on (so it
doesn't help me much. ;-)

A book called "4x4 Trails of Arizona Vol. 1" by Deuty is available at Popular.
This is a spiral bound book with descriptions and GPS coordinates for a number
of trails in central AZ. He never wrote a Vol. 2.

At Wide World of Maps, you can find two pamphlets called "4 Wheel Drive Trail
Guide & Maps", sponsored by Jeep. These each have about 15 trails described,
and cost about $5. Again, these are mostly in central AZ. Wide World of Maps
is THE place for Topos too. They have 2 places in Phoenix, one in Mesa.

You might also want to get the DeLorme Arizona Atlas which can also be found
at Popular. This shows many unimproved roads and trails, but you won't find
specific trail information. Good for exploring.

And then there's the AZ-VJC! If you find a trail that sounds interesting, post
it. I don't recommend trying a Class 3 or above trail on your own. That's what
we're here for!

Subject: Trail Info

The easiest way to find out where trails are at in Arizona is to go
on runs with people who know where they are. Sorry. Probably not what you
wanted to hear! Going on trail rides in groups is much more fun than going
it alone.

The one thing nice about Arizona is that most trails are publicly accessible
even though some require permits. All Arizona State Trust Land access requires
a permit.

There are three ways of getting a State Trust Land permit:
(1) General hunting license. But if you get stopped, you had better have a
good explanation, since hunting seasons vary per game animal.
(2) By joining a club affiliated with the Arizona State Association of 4WD Clubs
or by joining the ASA4WDC as an individual member. The rules here are pretty vague.
But basically, you have a permit that allows you to recreate (have fun) on State
Trust Land.
(3) Purchase your own permit from the State Trust Land office.
Call Peggy Drumm (AZ State Trust Land Office) 542-2926.

Bulldog Canyon is the only National Forest trail that requires a permit.
TheCamino del Diablo requires permits from the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife
Refuge and the Goldwater Gunnery Range. Both are free. You can have them FAXed
or snail mailed to you. The Gunnery Range permit is good you 1 year and can be
renewed via telephone. The Marines are very detailed oriented and want to know
practically everything about your visit to the range. If they act brusque, they
are only doing their job!

Some Indian Reservations require you to purchase permits for travelling
in some areas.

There are a few trails where knowing the rancher who owns the
land you are crossing is very helpful. Trails such as the ones around the ghost
town of Ruby, Arizona are on private property, but access usually means writing
a letter and asking permission --- pretty easy.

As for trails in the PHX area, the DeLorme map book is very helpful in letting
you know if you are on BLM, State Trust Land, Military or Indian Reservations,
National Forest, National Park, or National Monument. All these 'lands' have
different rules for access that you need to be aware of. Fines can be pretty
steep if you are caught in the wrong place at the wrong time!

I plan on including a list of popular 4x4 trails on my upcoming web page. The
ones I list will visible on either USGS quadrangles or in the DeLorme book. I
know that not everybody has GPS units. I don't, I find a compass and a map much
more reliable since compasses don't use microprocessors or batteries! <VBG>
Besides, sometimes getting disoriented (err lost) can lead to some interesting
adventures!

As far as exploring on your own make sure you avoid trails that are above
your experience or the capability of your vehicle. Carry at least 5 gallons
of water with you on any trip, make sure someone knows where you are going
and when you expect to return, and carry a CB or a 2-meter ham radio. Chances
are you will be able to successfully contact someone with either of these is
much more likely than with a cell phone. A 2-meter ham radio requires a no-code
technicians license. The test is pretty easy -- I know of an 83 year old woman
who didn't finish high school who got her license last year!

See yall on Jan 23! It looks like the Rim Country 4-wheelers are meeting at
9:30am at the Texaco station. Most of them are driving down from the Payson-
Pine area so they will be starting a little later. We will probably meet at t
the Coke Ovens.

Linda

I am new to the area of Pheonix and I am rebuilding my 1982 CJ-7. I am at the
point in which I need some body work and painting done.
The tub and all other body parts have been removed from the frame and removed
of all paint. So I need a shop or individual who can do the work off frame.
I would appriciate any help in this area and look forward to hearing from
individuals interested in jeeps or other areas.

I have tomorrow off, and was thinking of heading out, to find a trail
I've been looking for. Should be a good trail for a run in Feb for
AzVJC....maybe even for an overnight, but I want to find it before I
suggest it for a run. Goes to Bartlett Lake, and is supposed to be a
class 3+. LindaL has done this before, but at night, as I recall.

Anyway, if anyone wants to come exploring tomorrow, shoot me a note.
