Just wanted to share some links with everyone:

>El Camino Del Diablo: Highway of the Devil <~~~this is a good trial in Arizona

Awesome trail. I have done it twice (1996, 1997) and plan on doing it again sometime. The neatest thing about the trail is that there are no aircraft (except military) so it is really quiet out there. The biggest hassle is getting the permits from the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge and the Goldwater Gunnery Range (they are free, but you want to get them way in advance just to make things easier). There are people who do this trail in two days. We spent 5 days on the trail last year (1997) and still felt like we were going way too fast!

Linda

Subject: New Years Day Run

Just a reminder that Steve and I will be doing our 2nd Annual New Years Day trail run.

Meeting Place: ASA4WDC Jamboree campsite.
Meeting time: January 1, 1999 @ 9:00am
Monitor CB Channel 7
Trail rating: Not sure, but will probably be doing Upper Woodpecker, which is a 3.5-4+ trail.

Trail description (if we do upper woodpecker): Lots of rock crawling, interesting obstacles, the most challenging obstacles have alternates. The trail is approx 3/4-mile long, but is very slow going. This trail can be walked faster than it can be driven!

Notes: We will be out on the trail most of the day so bring lunch, drinks, and more water than you think you need. Make sure you have at least one good spare tire. This trail eats them!

Directions: Approx 20 miles east of Phoenix on US60 to Hwy 79 (Florence Junction). Go south on Hwy 79 towards Florence approximately 5 miles. Turn east at the flagpole between milepost 144 and 145. Continue approx 5 miles on the well graded dirt road. If in doubt, stay Right. The campsite is approximately 1/2 mile before you reach the cattle guard on the south side of the road. If you get to the cattle guard, you have gone too far. There are 3 or 4 entrances into the campsite on the south side of the road. You can't get lost! -- Unless you want to! Look for the big green Dodge, the blue ZJ, and a very small white travel trailer.

Looks like we got a few new members in December. Welcome!

We have people with all levels of experience. Some of you may never have taken
your Jeep off-road and you're looking for a fairly easy trail to get your feet
wet. There are good trails out there for this. Some of you may be bored with
anything less than Class 4. Good trails for that too.

Some of you are more interested in hunting down remote ghost towns, or perhaps
rockhounding, or camping in remote areas. A lot of us have these interests
too.

So drop us a line and tell us where you are located and what kind of trail
runs you want to try. If you want to try a particular trail, post it and a
proposed date. Our trail runs typically have from 2 to 10 Jeeps involved (and
more people). The longer the advanced notice, the more people tend to come.
Family and pets are welcome too.

We typically do 1 or 2 major runs a month, and sometimes several smaller
wildcat runs someone may think up on short notice.

Check out our archives at

http://www.egroups.com/list/az_vjc/. You will find past trail reports and
upcoming plans. The next trip planned is 1/23. Linda is leading a trip
to Coke Ovens via Battle Axe Road. See her e-mail dated 12/21 for details.

Your more than welcome to join us on the 23rd. All you need is a Jeep.
The trail that Linda has suggested is a class 3, that will start of
Batle Axe road, south of Superior. Check the list serv for old messages
that will provide more info.

Welcome to AzVJC.

Hello all,

I found your list about a month ago and have been following all
of the posts with interest. My wife, Kathy, and I live in Cordes
Lakes (about 45 mi N of Phoenix), and recently traded in our 88 XJ
on a 98 TJ. So far it is stock (2" RE spacer lift for Xmas, not yet
installed), and we have had it off road a bit (enough to beat the
hell out of the factory gas tank skid plate). We were planning to
try to come to the trip on the 23rd, but unfortunately, I have to
work that day (I work every 5th Saturday). We are looking forward
to whatever is planned in February and look forward to meeting
everyone.

Subject: TK Slider's - review

A while back, I posted a note about TK Sliders (rear sway bar
disconnects for TJ's and YJ's)...and I indicated I'd post a note to the
group on my impressions.

As reference, I have a 98 TJ w/ a Teraflex 3" lift, and flexible upper
and lower control arms in the rear, and flexible lower control arms in
the front; w/ 32x11.50 BFG MT's.

Upon inspection, the TK's appear to be quite well made, and
strong...better then I anticipated. The stop bolt looked a little
vulnerable to damage...until I saw that it had a protective sleave
covering it....so no problems there.

I put the TK's on this morning, and installation was fairly quick and
easy. The only problem was with the bushing sleeves, which had an inside
diameter that was too small for the bolts...so I used the old sleeves
from the Teraflex connector bushings, which worked fine. BTW, the stock
Jeep sleeves won't work. I advised Tim Kyle (TK Sliders) about the
problem, and I'm sure he'll make the necessary adjustments.

Anyway, I headed out to the Coves this afternoon to try them out. I
wanted to see how they were on some trails and hills I've done before.
On the road with the pins in place, they were quiet...no noise that I
could tell, as contrasted with the Teraflex front disconnects that I
have...that do rattle a little.

At Butcher Jones (trail head), I disconnected by pulling one pin per
side. Since the connectors arn't as accessable as the front disconnects
are, this required reaching under the TJ a bit, just in front of the
rear wheels. No big deal.

Once through the gate, there are some major mogals, which are fun. I
immediately noticed how level the TJ was, as the rear wheels
articulated. The TK's allow for 4" of slider travel, before the sway bar
kicks in, and if you have a wheel drop suddenly, you'll hear the stop on
the slider click as the sway bar engages and starts to bend. I like the
fact that the sliders only provide so much additional travel, and still
allows the sway bar to work at extreme movements...since I've heard
(from a post in the Jeep-Willys NG) of someone that removed their rear
sway bar all together...only to have a rear spring pop out on the trail.
I was followed by a friend in a CJ, who indicated that my rear wheels
were really tucking up into the wells, and dropping down into the
holes...but I experienced no rubbing in the fender well, and I did not
experience any limit of shock travel (DT 3000's).

We headed toward the 3rd Cove, where there are some class 4 hills.
Again, the TK's provided for an increase in rear wheel articulation, and
I made it up all hills w/o spinning a wheel. I was able to keep the rear
wheels firmly on the ground at all times. I've done all these hills at
least two previous times, and this was by far the easiest time I've had.

The TK's really did make a difference...though not as dramatic as front
disconnects do. I noticed that the TJ rode more level...w/o the rear
wheel jerk you sometimes get when running w/ only your fronts
disconnected.

Back at Butcher Jones, re-connection was easy, though it did require
getting under the Jeep. The rear sway bar is not as heavy as the front,
and getting the pins in was simply a matter of reaching up to the bar
and pushing it up, or pulling it down to get the pins in. It (the sway
bar) bends w/ only moderate effort.

All in all, I'm glad I got these...and will continue to use them. I'll
advise of any additional relevant observations.

Hi All,

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Randy Stewart and will be joining
you in the Southwest in mid Feb.

I have a 70 CJ5 and am looking forward to some rock crawling and
a Devil's Highway run.

As Oregon does not require pre 1975 vehicles to meet any pollution
standards, my CJ DOES NOT.

What are the rules for pollution control (smog pump, headers, muffler
restrictions, etc.) in Maricopa and surrounding. I am planning to live in
Chandler, Mesa or Tempe area.

Thanks in advance,

Randy

Hi All,

As you all know I am moving to AZ. The clinker is that a 1970
CJ5 must pass smog. (Yeah right.) But a 1967 or earlier does not.

Does anyone have a title and VIN plaque that you would part
with (or trade for my 1970)?

Here is your chance to get some $$$ for your junked jeep!

Thanks,

Randy

At the risk of sounding intolerant, it sounds to me that you are using our
mailing list to propose an illegal activity. This is not an acceptable way to
use any mail list service, especially this one. As Moderator, there are a
number of ways I can respond. Unless the rest of the group expresses a
different opinion, I think today I'll stop with this warning. Perhaps I'm just
missing some subtle humor here.

We have a fine, diverse group of people here, a group I'm proud to be a part
of. I'd like to keep it that way.

In my understanding, swapping titles/VIN plates between vehicles is highly
illegal, and would result in fines, jail time, or both for all people
involved. Since you have advertised in this way, anyone responding with the
material you asked for would also be guilty of knowingly aiding in the
commission of a crime. The rest of us on the list could also be liable for
conspiricy (sp?).

Dan is a much nicer person than I. If it were up to me, I would permanently
lock you out of the list, report you to your ISP for solicitation of illegal
activities, and report you to the Department of Motor Vehicles both in AZ
and your home state.

The short version is: GO AWAY

Len

I agree with the opinion expressed by Dan. This is really not something
