I didn't post this in the do it yourself as I didn't take pictures along the way because I never think to. One day I'll get it right. Anyway, my buddy called me up at about 5pm saying he was in a jam. Me not being able to turn down a fun task especially if it has to do with melting metal I told him I'd be home by 6:30. He was heading to Glamis at 4:30 the next morning for a day trip and didn't want to load up his toy hauler since he wasn't going to be there overnight. He borrowed a trailer from his buddy and noticed his buggy was too wide for it. This trailer had ride on wheel wells but once the buggy was on there was only a couple of inches of tire on each side in contact with the trailer. The rest was hanging over the edge. He jokingly said to his buddy with the trailer, "we could always widen it". To which his buddy responded, if you want to go for it. He made him aware that widening it meant welding, and he was all for it. Still, I'll make a note to self never to let my buddy Don borrow anything of mine...let alone a trailer. :D
Don grabbed 6 1/4" plates approximately 12" square. He figured I could weld 3 per side. The finished product is about 106" wide which is 4" wider than the law allows but it will get him to the dunes and back today. When he gets back we're going to take 2" off of each side as well as probably cut off the leading and trailing corners to kinda mimic the lines of the trailer and give a more finished look. In addition the trailer didn't have a safety chain so we welded on a tab and installed that. Put on a place to mount a spare tire, and rewired the break-a-way brake switch. Oh yeah, even cut out the post holes in the plate. Anyway, here are the pics:
