Greetings,

I'm sure this is on the board somewhere, but I don't have Internet at home, and very limited time to surf at work. I need to know the capacity and type of gear lube recommended for this axle. It has a limited slip. I'm replacing a bent shaft this weekend. Any other pitfalls to be aware of?

Thanks for your assistance,

Rob

I don't remember how many pints I used although I do know it used a lot mroe than I thought. Remember, on the 8.8 the seals are actually on the end of the axle so the entire axle is full of oil. I'm thinking mine may have taken 5 of those Royal Purple containers (are they a quart?). I just kept filling it up until it was up to the bottom of the filler hole. Also, I hated filling that thing up because the fill hole is on the pinion side of the pumpkin.

Mike,

Thanks for the response. According to the local Ford dealer, it should take 2.75 quarts of oil. However, they couldn't tell me if the LSD needs friction modifier or not. Hopefully, I can get a definitive answer befor this weekend.

Wow, only 2.75??? Last time I had to fill it I want to say mine took 4.

I'd have to agree with Mike and Chris. I don't remember the exact figue either, but it was a lot more than expected. I think I bought 3 qts, and had to go back to the auto store for at least one more.

My 8.8 came new with what appeared to be synthetic fluid, so that's what I've always put in it. Was an open carrier, now with a Detroit...so I can't comment o nthe friction additive for an LSD.

yes you need to throw a bottle/tube of the limited slip modifier for LSD. as for the total amount of fluid it holds.............just bring it up to the fill hole or until your pinky finger gets wet when inserted in the hole. as mentioned it fills on the pinion side of diff so you don't have to try and "overfill" it if you have a lift and the diff is pointed up at an extreme angle.

Stock 8.8 on a ford is about 3qts. in a jeep with a lift and the pinion up, its about 5qts.

Really the friction modifier wouldn't hurt things so if in doubt just put it in... but on a clutch type LSD you do need it...

most limited slips have clutches in them. If this is true for your limited slip, then I have just one ?ion.... How many miles u have on it? If it is over 100K then dont worry about it. Brcause after 100K most clutches are gone and the limited slip no longer works. I found this out the hard way, stuck in a river bottom in knee high water.

Thanks for the replies. I just picked this beast up from a guy in Prescott, so I have no idea how many miles were on the rear before it went under the Jeep. I'll pick up 5 qts and some modifier, rather have too much than not enough, since the nearest parts store is a 40 mile round trip. For those interested, I'll throw some specs out and try to get a picture or 2 next week when things calm down at work.

SOA on stock springs, SRS, 8.8 rear, D30 front 3.73 (gotta go deeper) 37" MT/Rs, alloy wheels
hi-steer, full cage, pretty trick looking tubular fender/stinger combo.

It looks to have been built by a good fab shop, all the welding work is awesome!

Thanks again for the responses, looking forward to actually having time to wheel this beast!

Yeah, that was my reaction too. As soon as the 37's are worn out, I'm going to put 35's on it, and the plan is to re-gear to 4.88's in June.
