So I'm a new jeep owner, and am in the process of being inducted into the club.

I bought a 1980 CJ-7 last weekend (my first jeep), and drove about 50 miles before I had to replace the alternator. Then drove another 50 or so miles before having to replace all the fuel lines and fuel filter in the engine compartment (while parked in the back parking lot of a Tempe Red Lobster)

Now that I have it back home in Flagstaff, I went to replace the fuel filter that hides in the carb, and found out the brass fuel line couplings were glued on (with JB-weld) because the threads didn’t match. So I’m rebuilding the carb (Carter Quadrajet 4bbl) and I don’t know what I should use to lube the external mechanics of the carb. Or should I lube it at all?

So hello to everyone! I’m looking forward to doing some runs with you all in the near future.

Unless things have changed in the last 20 years......please don't rebuild the
Q-Jet! They are junk!

Welcome aboard! :D

I am the friend of Telanas that helped him get into jeeping. I told him of my old q-jet in my '73 CJ5 that never seemed to work after the rebuild.
If it aint broke, dont fix it? New carbs are expensive, and rebuilding seems cheap.... but he might be anal enough to do it correctly.......

I am just not sure if it is worth rebuilding if it is working....

I've been rather happy with my Edelbrock (Carter AFB) 600... on my 77J10 (390), 78CJ7 (304), and have had on several GrandWaggy's . Surprised to hear Q-jet bad things... I've heard really good things. What I like about AFB is how easy is to change metering rods (altitude change requires).

make sure you give me a call when you are in town

fwiw, I had a Carter 2bbl on my 258 for years and regardless of all the crap people say about it, it worked great. I rebuilt the same carb a half dozen times and it still worked great. It all depends on whose doing the rebuilds ;)

I just figure it better to rebuild an old carb, rather then learning on a new fancy one. Besides I still need to figure out why the secondary throttle plates are not opening. ;)

from my experience, money, time, frustration not feeling .002" warp on mating surface (causing vacum leak and general crappy performance), or not being able to flush restriction from one of several vents= not worth rebuilding/having rebuilt

K7... looks like he is running 360

CJ run : wife out of town+3girls+way long ride for tripe=doubtful:(

Matt and all. I am only talking about the quadra-jet. I finally got to where
every vehicle I bought that had one, the first thing I did was replace it.
My last was on a 73 blazer 350. I started home late one night from
Phoenix and by the time I got to Sunflower, it had no power but would start
and idle fine. Just setting there, you could rev the engine. The only way
I could get it to move the vehicle was to pump the gas pedal! I drove the last
one hundred miles home like this at 30 miles an hour.

Doe anyone know what the problem was?:p

The accelerator pump on the Q-jet was stuck! I walked with a
limp all weekend! If I had only know.:o

I'm not sure I can get the carb working by the weekend, But I'll give it my best. I just got back from some auto parts stores, and nobody has the threaded brass fuel line coupling that goes into the carb. They have some self taping ones, but they are to large. So I may just clean it up and apply more JB weld.

I may post some pictures and see if anyone here has some better ideas first though. BTW Thanks for the warm welcome.
