The garmin topo software is called Map Source.

its mapsource. get the topo software it is very in depth i use it with my etrex legend. acuracy is based on the # of satillites it tracks. in vehicle, it can be less than accurate due to lack of line of site with the sky. good luck ive enjoyed mine and it does help

I have a Garmin 60csx and I bought my garmin software at REI. They had the city street maps as well as the topo navigatioin maps. Strange thing was that the city maps sometimes showed more of the road type trails than the topo maps did. Both are great to have though.

The Mapsource topo software works great. I've been using it for a few years now...

I just loaded up a bunch of maps into my Etrex Vista today from a Map Source
Topo CD. I don't think it shows FS road numbers though. I'll have to look.

I've got the Garmin Jeep trailguide. It came with the city navigator and I bought the mapsource topo programs for the unit. I can load a few sections at a time and it works great. I was disappointed when I went to the Harquala observatory it didn't show the road. It showed the other one coming up the other side.

There is a national parks program that shows the forest service roads etc. If you go to wide world of maps they have the programs in the computer and show you how they look before you buy. They are knowledgable about how to download etc. I forgot the young man who helped me but he really knows his stuff. Plus they are an authorized dealer.

PS friends, In search and rescue the GPS is just one tool, we also carry two compass and a paper map of the area. Always use your map and compass skills alomg with the GPS.

I have the garmin topo and its ok for what your going to use it for on the small units. I have the GPS V deluxe and it works great. If you want to use the unit with a computer (laptop on the trail or at home) I would recommend a program called maptech (i think) or the Delorme topo. the maptech uses actual quad maps from the USGS. I think that delorme has a similar program.
