Wondering if anyone has done this recently to their jeep? Want to replace the paper element with something more durable (K&N or air raid) but the stock piping isnt condusive to the mod. I would have to purchase a kit (around $250  ) or purchase the piping myself and jimmy-rig it. Advice please? Also, there are several hose connections that present a problem, both are vacuum related I think and have connections to the stock piping. Is it possible to route around this and leave them disconnected? If not how do I keep them connected when I switch to using a K&N filter? Heres a picture of the air raid system, I like it better than the K&N because it utilizes the box by sitting on top of it. http://www.airaid.com/310-136_jeep.asp
TY in advance.

Just buy a replacement K&N, should be able to get one the same size as stock and just drop it in.

If you want clean air entering your engine, stick with the OEM filter... Filtration capacity and capability to provide clean air to your motor is WAY better than the gauze washables K&N and everyone of thier copy cat's offer...
One of those aftermarket washable gauze filters may be "sorta-ok" for the rainy areas of the country, or areas where ther is little or no dust, but here in Central and South Western AZ, we have the smallest particle sizes and most abrasive dust partticles (caliche) in the north western hemisphere...
FWIW: you won't find any AG or construction equipment around these parts outfitted with washable gauze air filtration systems... There is a VERY good reason for that...:) ;)

Thats very interesting, I did not know that. I was under the impression that the "washable" K&N filters are better for filtering out dirt and all the crap you dont want in your engine. Besides, I hate the way those paper filters look.
If you look at my avatar you'll know the reason that got me thinking about doing a K&N filter mod. See on XJ's the air box is under the hood next to the engine, but the air pick up is actually under the bumper. That scare's the $#!7 outta me when crossing water that comes right up to my frame, hence the reason for the K&N filter.

They do a bang-up job of advertising, but those gauze washable styles of filter mediums simply do NOT provide as good as the OEM paper filters.
If you're looking for a way to keep the engine intake out of water, buy some hose and/or PVC, and plumb the intake over to the fresh-air intake plenum (the heater's fresh air intake plenum box which is screened off, directly in front of, and below the Windshield)...
Has the added "plus" of the potential to provide a VERY slight performance boost, due to the fact that at highway speeds, it's the highest pressure zone anywhere on the front of the XJ...:) ;)
FWIW: that's where the air intake was on the 4.0L LSR Commanche which set B-production PU Truck, of 141 Mph @ Bonneville.:D ;)

I went back to paper after I saw how much dirt got past my K&N.
The K&N is now in the dumpster. Waste of money IMO.
