Hey all,
It's been 15 years since I last had a 4x4. I have been running all this time in 2wd wranglers or xj's.
I picked up a 1995 xj 6cyl auto 4x4 on sunday :D . I wanted to test the 4x4 last night and realized that it doesn't have the good old Warn locking hubs on the front.
I figured it has the newer auto-locking hubs, so I rolled it forward at about 5mph and slowly pulled back on the transfer case shifter, it made the familiar "thunk" when it dropped to 4L, so I put the tranny to 1st and give it a little gas to engage, then get up to about 10mph and start a slight right hand turn, and wouldn't you know it, it starts to hop.
What is the right way to get this thing engaged

THe shifter did? If its lifted it might need a drop bracket kit for the linkage. What exactly is hopping? the tires? might have a locker?

Never thought I would hear myself say this "back in the old days" when I had my '79 Cherokee, I had the manual 4 speed, I would just leave it in neutral, get out and lock the hubs, then get in and put the transfer into 4H or 4L, then put the tranny into first and roll forward 5-6 feet to engage the hubs and everything was all set.
Now, if you ever had the lack of foresight (or just dumb luck) of NOT locking your hubs, when you went to try and drive the whole front end acts like it is hopping up and down while your axle and hubs slowly grind themselves to death.
Well maybe not that extreme, but I have seen a few "gung ho" types who would throw it into 4H while driving along at 10-25mph and actually catch 3-4 inches of air before their front axle blew up.

i always engage 4h while moving. It can be done witht he 231 up to 45 or 50 mph. i only go to neutral for LO (well now i have to park and crawl under cause my linkage is apart :D) oh and congrats on the new jeep :D

Maybe i'm just reading this wrong because i'm special. If you are in 4wd and try to turn on the pavement you are going to bind up and hop. It is what 4wd does on the pavement or any surface you are getting full grip on. It sounds to me like you engaged it just fine.

nope, had a '93 yj ( I only paid $3000 ) about 10 years ago and the front shaft was gone ( previous owner had a close encounter with a rock - it won ).
I never got the time to swap in a new shaft, then ended up having my first daughter and sold it, so it was a 2wd wrangler. :o
As to the pavement/dirt question, I did first try it in the parking lot at the QT before hitting the dirt about a mile down the road, and again a mile down the road, ( past ellsworth and university ) and got the same result. I will have to try this again this weekend.
