Do not fret, ye winchers. My son's bball practice was cancelled so there is a good chance that I might show up in a TOYOTA!! (I assume there will be no ill-feelings!!) If my wife doesn't have other plans, I'll show up in a '91 reddish, maroon 4runner.

Subject: Box/Martinez Canyon's - Trail Report
Had a great day. We had 10 vehicles, but I'm not sure about all the
names...here goes: DanW(TJ); LindaL(superZJ); Steve(Dodge super truck);
DanMcF and sons(TJ); Ed(CJ); Jess?(CJ); Jim?(CJ); Eric(TJ); ??and sons(4
runner); and myself-Doug(TJ). Sorry bout some of the names. Please post
a correction.
Anyway, we got off at about 9:20 or so and headed off for Box Canyon.
This is a very beautiful canyon, that is quite narrow. It's probably a
class 3, with some nice spots.
We then took off on a trail to the east that would take us into
Martinez, and stoped a short way in to play on several challenging
hills. The first was quite steep and full of holes and mogals. Ed(CJ)
was the trail blazer on this one, and he bounced his way up to the top.
The other CJ's (w/ 35" swampers) made it up fine, though one of 'em
needed to adjust his line several times to make it. I was next, and had
the benefit of seeing how the others went, so I was able to find a good
line. Eric was the last one up on this one, and we all had a good laugh
on the top.
If someone took some pictures, perhaps you could post 'em.
A second hill nearby was probably as steep, but much less rutted out.
Linda, Eric, and Jess? took this one with ease.
We then pressed on to Martinez. This trail (to the canyon) is quite easy
(class 2) and ends at a 'T'. Left goes on up the canyon, and right will
take you to the coke ovens. We went left in to the mining area and on up
to the old mill. This portion of the trip was class 4, with some large
boulders to maneuver around and over. The CJ's were fun to watch on the
rocks. They took some of the hardest lines. Not all were able to make it
all the way to the mill, so some some hiked in a short distance. When we
made it to the mill, we ran into 3 other Jeeps, stopping for lunch.
This entire area has mines everywhere...the Silver Bell is near by, and
the mill we were at was used for lead mining that took place during WW2
(according to a very interesting old timer we came accross earlier on
the trail). There are remnants of a small gauge RR, with some collapsing
wooden tressles still somewhat intact. A nice spot to stop and take in
the scenery...and also to fix a Jeep...Ed's clutch linkage came apart,
and needed some quick trail mechanical work. Not a problem...Ed got it
all back together in about 15 minutes.
We headed back and the trail out was a bit more challenging then the
trail in. At one spot, Linda got here RE'd ZJ in the "Perfect" photo op.
She was really twisted....so she stopped for the cameras...hope this one
gets posted. Linda, you ought to send a copy of this to JP
magazine...they'd be sure to put it in a future edition.
On the way out we decided that we wouldn't have time to visit the coke
ovens, so we headed back to Box, and turned north, with the idea of
visiting Woodpecker trail, and heading on out to US60. After a bit,
Linda showed us the entrance to Woodpecker...a very tough class 4 trail,
which starts out with "the Slot".
I was foolish enough to try this. If you've ever seen movies where guys
are driving around on two wheels...that's kinda what you have to do to
get through "the Slot". It has a rugged rock face on the left, and a
very large boulder on the right. I manuvered several times to get the
right line (thanks Steve and DanW for your spotting). The trick is to
get your right wheels up on the very large boulder, while your left
wheels are in the slot...all the while trying not to run your roof into
the rock face...and trying not to tip over. I came very close to doing
both, but took my time. The spotters really helped, and are actually
essential for this type of obsticle. At one point, it felt like I could
reach out my window and touch the ground.
Again, if there are any photo's, please post 'em if you can. This one,
I'd love to see.
Everyone else had the good sense to avoid this obsticle, and we all went
back to the main trail and headed up to US60, which we reached at about
5-5:30.
A good time was had by all!

Thanks for leading the way, Doug! My kids and I had a great time. We ended
up leaving the group at the entrance to Woodpecker Mine, cause I wanted to get
back home at a decent hour. We still needed to make the trek cross-town to
Peoria. We made it home at around 5:30. I think we all slept well last
night! Great fun. Thanks again for your organizing and trailblazing efforts.
Thanks also to the rest of the group for helping me through some of the
obstacles and for being a fun group of people to spend the day with. I
learned a lot yesterday. The boys and I are looking forward to the next run.
See you soon.

Subject: Joining ASA4WDC
While on the Box Canyon run, we discussed with Linda the value of the "Arizona
State Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs, Inc." This association is "an
organization dedicated to the advancement of vehicle oriented outdoor
recreation and the proper use of our public lands." This organization exists:
"To promote a more responsible attitude towards the vehicle use of public
lands. To prevent legislation which would impose undue restriction on
recreational 4-wheeling. To institute programs of Conservation, Education and
Safety. To encourage state and federal land management agencies to develop
areas and trails for outdoor recreation. To disseminate information of
interest to vehicle oriented recreationists. To promote statewide activities
for the enjoyment of our members."
Usually when you join a 4x4 club, part of your membership dues goes to a
membership in the ASA4WDC. Since we are a Virtual club and we don't have dues,
I would just encourage you to consider joining on your own.
You might check out their web site at
http://www.asa4wdc.org/ to see what they are about. A one year membership
is only $25. You will get a membership card, vehicle decals, monthly
newsletter, and also a state land use permit, which would allow us to be 4
wheelin on state trust lands (like Box Canyon).

Thanks for the URL for JP Mag. I sent an email to Rick Pewe to see if they accept digital images. I hope they do! It'll save them the trouble of scanning and correcting the color.
FWIW: Rick was the original owner/operator of Republic Off-Road, a 4x4 shop that was located on Hayden Rd, north of University. It used to be the only shop of its kind in the East Valley. If you didn't go there you went to 4-wheelers Supply over on 22nd St and Washington in Phoenix. He sold the store after he started working for Petersen's Publishing a few years ago.

Subject: Our very own X-Files
If you remember in the Table Mesa Road trip report, we reported we saw a "UFO"
while looking out west from a saddle that gave us great views west toward the
Bradshaws. I took a few photos, including one telephoto.
I was joking with Eric on our Box Canyon run about how weird it would be if
all the photos on that roll of film came out fine _except_ the UFO photos.
Well, that's what happened.
All the pictures on that roll are fine except the few I took up on that
saddle. They all look OK on the far left-hand side, then fade quickly to black
on the right-hand side. Photos I took later on the same roll, are fine. Weird.
So far, I haven't been visited by anyone in black suits - that I can recall.
;-)
I hope it was aliens only temporarily messing with my camera, because it's the
same camera I used on the Box Canyon trip!
Anyway, there is good news. One of the pictures came out almost OK. It looks
fine on the left, and fades to black on the right, with our UFO in the center.
So, I put a Table Mesa Road trail report on my web page, and added a couple of
UFO photos just for fun.

Phoenix Four Wheelers Christmas "thing" is this weekend. Runs on
Saturday and Sunday starting at like 8 or 9AM from Black Canyon City.
These will include Terminator, which I will NOT be on (yet.) I'll look
everything up tonight when I get home, and post the deatils tomorrow, in
case anyone is interested.
The Jeep is finally back on the road! It now has a new dual-friction
clutch (sweet) a freshly rebuilt transmission (ugh!) and new U-Joints
(as an afterthought.) I also voted to raise the transfer case about 1/2
inch or so - no vibes - WooHoo! Now I can start spending money on
things I actually WANT to do... Like that spare tire carrier I've had
my eye on...

I need a pair of tow hooks from any late model (91-newer) chevy 4x4. The plan
is to sandwich the towhooks between my sway bar mounts and the frame, using
longer bolts (then cutting holes through the air dam to allow access and a
cool look). If anyone has these hooks, or knows where i can get them (dont
say the "dealer" because they are 25.25 each from chevy) and maybe some longer
bolts that will fit this application, please drop me a line.......or if you
have a better idea let me know!!

So, I put a Table Mesa Road trail report on my web page, and added a couple of
UFO photos just for fun.

getting the 'newsletters' from the group. Anybody have AOL

Wow... Tuesday and no plans for Sunday yet?! My work Christmas party Saturday night was terrible, I know where I should have been at 9am that morning! What a waste... This weekend can't be blown like the last, any thoughts for Sunday?

Subject: chevy tow hooks (sacralige but it might work)
I need a pair of tow hooks from any late model (91-newer) chevy 4x4. The plan
is to sandwich the towhooks between my sway bar mounts and the frame, using
longer bolts (then cutting holes through the air dam to allow access and a
cool look). If anyone has these hooks, or knows where i can get them (dont
say the "dealer" because they are 25.25 each from chevy) and maybe some longer
bolts that will fit this application, please drop me a line.......or if you
have a better idea let me know!!
Gracias
