Would like to join the group for the sunflower run on Sunday, but don't want to hold anyone up. I'm still in the process of building up the JP, so I currently only have 31's w/no lift on a TJ. Installed a front diff guard and steering skid, but no rockers yet. Let me know. No biggie if you guys don't want a stock rig in the bunch.

I was invited to join a church men's group doing this run on Sat. who are meeting at the church at 155th and bell at 7am. I am meeting them at the air down point around 8am. Don't know if it is the same group...... But how many church groups do you suppose are running the CK run on this Sat?

you might be able to make it stock but expect to need a strap and scrape alot! A friend ran it in his stock xterra and ended up smashing in his side panels on the trail

Hey Guys,
I'd love to tag along with ya'll on the Sunflower trip with my wife and little girl.
We did Martinize cabin last weekend and the Coke Ovens 2 weeks before that.
Got a basket case CJ5 about a year ago and have it running pretty good now ( this is my 4th CJ5, rolled and totaled 2 of them ) of course that was 25 years ago when I was stupid.
We just like to look at the great Arizona views now, but I am up for a challange when the family gets out of the Jeep, LOL
Thanks
Mike

Guess I should ask if a cherokee with 3inch lift, 32inch tires and open diffs can make the sunflower run? I don't mind a few scratches and dents along the way.

I just got my TJ lifted but the weekend prior I took it out with no lift and 31". I beat the heck out of the rockers but with careful planning I made it through with no problems. There was once I had to stack after the jeep in front of me had thrown things around a bit. You can do it but expect to hit the undercarriage. If you don't have skid plates or rockers I wouldn't go simply because I'm no mechanic!

I run a TJ with 2" spacer lift, 33's and open diffs. There are maybe 3 technical spots on Sunflower where I have just a tiny bit of trouble but I have done it 3 times so getting to know the lines pretty well.
Any stockers who don't wnat to run the whole thing can turn around after the mine and go back and maybe do Mt Ord or something?
What time is the meeting for Sunflower? I"ll either hook up at the Sajuaro lake turnoff or maybe at the air down spot, just let us know.

Daniel, last I heard, everyone was meeting at the circle k on shea just off the bee line at 7 AM tomorrow morning (03/25). Guessing jeeper05 is out in CK today, so I'm not sure if he will be getting back to us prior to tomorrow morning. I'm planning on showing up, and based on this thread would guess there will be a few other rigs.

He is meeting at the Circle K at 0700. I'll be at the Saguaro lake turn off with any other east valley folks and they will swing by and meet us about 0715 or so. We will be on CB channel 4 as always. My wife is coming and a couple guys are talking about taking kids too. Bring a camara if you haven't done it before.

hey,
how long is this trail, time and distance?
Fire Ball
03-24-2007, 09:31 PM
Last time out with 25 rigs and Samdog giving a great guided tour, it took about 5 hours but th distance is not to far, lots of stopping, traffic jams, taking pics, and had lunch (bring food and water and a camera).
The obstacles are more rocks and a couple cracks, not to much to worry about as far as sheet metal damage, just a couple bangs on the bottom, maybe rocker panels if you are low and stock, depends on wheel base a litttle too. There is a long steep rocky hill we laughed at a Discovery struggle on. Should have air down a little ;)
If you decide not to go all the way, it is easy enough to turn around half way and go back. Mt Ord is also another trail to do after getting to the mine and turning back.

Had a graet time today and met some very nice people to wheel with.
The day started with Lyle (sp?) overheating on the way out possibly do to a collapsed lower radiator hose. Cooled it down, topped it off and away we went. It was pretty much uneventful except for a stock Tacoma having some difficulty as did a stocker Cherokee.
When we got most of the way up the long hill another group was coming down. We had six going up and 8 coming down and no where to turn around. We did some creative parking and got past them but not before on of their guys turned his drag link into a letter of the alphabet that rimes with sssss. They sorta seemed like mall crawlers. Two had winches but I don't think they had any straps or tools. I don't know how they were going to get that rig out with the tire pointing different directions.
I'll post up some pics later of Jason trying to flop his Discovery.

Hey all, Jeff here. Sunflower was great. Had fun trashing the skidplates on my tacoma. I should probably just sign up and get a login for the site, but for now it's just easier to use Daniel's. Thanks for the patience through the rough spots. Look forward to wheeling with you all again.
Well I haven't got anything but attitude so far, we made it just in time to catch the thunderbirds, but didn't get to see it with the wives and children.

My pictures (not many) can be found on my site (http://portal.jaysonstangel.com/photos/off-roading/Sunflower%20Mine/Forms/AllItems.aspx). The video (http://portal.jaysonstangel.com/photos/off-roading/Sunflower%20Mine/Near%20Flop%20Movie.AVI) is the best. Be warned there is an F-Bomb or 2 and other colorful metaphors in the video at the time of near flop.
