$15.40! Tera who??????
Another good example of why I'll never have a teraflex part on my jeep.
I have no idea if it is off or on. I do know it's closer, as I'm not
doing 90 on the freeway.
Easy fix, thanks Stu.
The only issue is the shift light coming on in 5th gear

Well gang thanks for the info.
Today I installed a 32 tooth
Spedo gear in after Installing 32" tires
with 3.73 gear ratio.
My speed in now only 2 MPH off.
When my spedo says 50 I'm doing 48.2 (garmin GPS12)
Thanks again for all the help.

Everybody and their mother, IMO, will gouge on little parts like this. And
some little Detroit based parts company stamps them out by the thousands for
about a $2. Being smart enough to not be taken for a ride is a learned
skill that everyone needs to develop. (and many folk don't)
When I did my speedo the last time, I checked the dealership.....$12. OK,
so I stopped by a little shop on the way to the dealership that advertises
as doing speedo calibrations, etc. They wanted $22 for the same gear. I
told the guy at the counter that the dealership has them for $12. He sold
me one out of a big box of pulled gears (yeah, they do keep your old gear
and sell it to the next guy) for $10. I gave my last two speedo gears to
other Jeepers (one in CO and one in CA). I hope that someday, when I need
another one (when I put the 38" tires on), someone will help me out. ;)

Subject: RE: Spedo help FINAL UPDATE
All this chat about speedo gears finally got me off my butt and into the
garage. Yesterday I changed out my gear from a 35 to a 37. Stu is right,
those charts and java applets are way off when it comes to their figures
for 4.56 gears and 35" tires. Most of them said to use a 35 tooth. I
found that I was traveling 5 mph fast with the 35 and popped in the 37
tooth. Like Stu I am now within less than 1 mph according to the GPS.
Right after that my friend Jake who just got some new MTR's stopped by.
He has 31's and 4.10 gears. We tried a 35 tooth I had but it was about 5
mph off. We then pulled the 37 tooth out of my Jeep and put it in his to
see if it was closer. While doing this we found that he had torn the o
ring while installing the 35 tooth gear. He had ATF fluid everywhere. I
borrowed him the o-ring off mine so he could drive it since I don't need
mine until the weekend. Anyway, it turns out he was within 1 mph with
the 37 tooth gear so we left it in there and I'm going to pick up
another one.
Over the last 8 years I've been collecting an assortment of spares from
the old YJ, my TJ, and helping others. I have 5 extra gears available if
anybody needs one of these. 31, 35, 35, 40 & 41. If you want to stop by
I'd be glad to help you and we can check the accuracy against my GPS. I
live a 1/2 mile from Avondale Jeep so we can easily get a new gear.
Chris B recently paid $13 for his at Avondale Jeep.
Later,

Let's not be prejudice because I have an RE lift.
I have many disheartening encounters with teraflex. And this was

I thought I did just that. Tera's apple (speedo gear) RE's apple
(hand throttle) neither are manufactured by their respective
companies. The hand throttle is in fact a friction bike shifter and
cable. The RE kit's cable is even in a plastic bage with a bike
company's logo on it. So to answer your question, yes the RE hand
throttle is basicly the same. You think the Tera gear was over
priced, I think the RE throttle is over priced. Do I make disparaging
statement about RE? No. Why? Because their core business is lifts
and they make a great product. TeraFlex as well makes a great
product.

Les,
I usually tell people the chart is just a guide, real results may
vary. The best way to do it, unfortunately for you, is with a GPS.
You need to find out the MPH percentage you are off and your gear
will need to change by this percentage.

What's really amazing is that I have the stock speedo gear in mine and it is
dead on according to GPS.
Basically I went from those itty bitty street tires with 3.55 gears to
finally 35s and 4.10 gears. Whodathunk?

Try finding those old style bicycle shifters anymore. None of the bike
shops I've been to carries them anymore.
BTW, I've installed the RE hand throttle on both my old YJ and my TJ.
The extra couple of bucks was worth it since I didn't have to take
multiple trips out to acquire parts. How many times has that 1 hour
project turned into 3 because of the extra trips to the parts store ;)

Subject: [TR] Martinez Canyon - Saturday, March 9, 2002 - Reminder
Hello All,
Mike Baney is leading a Martinez Canyon trail run on Saturday, March 9, 2002.
When: Meet at 8:30 AM, roll out at 9:00 AM
Where: Meet at Texaco in FJ
Rating: 4.0+
Length: Several hours
CB Channel: 4
This is to help Chirs, the guy with the burnt Toy on the trail. We will need some help, muscle, tools, pickup truck to haul a short distance, winch, etc...
Martinez Canyon has to be one of the most beautiful canyons south of the Sedona AZ red bluffs. To reach the trailhead you travel over rolling hills of desert cactus, shrubs and trees. All of a sudden you enter a narrow passageway into a canyon of deep red bluffs and cottonwood trees.
Most of the year there is a spring that winds through the trees and low area. You will find the old homestead at the grouping of cottonwood trees along with some old mining generators and storerooms. Just past the homestead you will drop into the wash and follow it to the old mill.
The road winds back and forth across the wash as well as follows the wash for a time but the trail stays in the wash. You can spend hours "playing" on the rocks and waterfalls.
A mile or so into the wash you will approach a large landslide blocking the wash so the trail starts up the switchback trail "to the top of the world". The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking.
As you start back down the switchback trail you will find it has been washed out, big time! The washout cuts through several of the "switchbacks" in a cut approximately 8 feet deep and 8 foot wide, so down you go. After a drop into the washout you will crank a hard left turn and literally freeslide on the loose gravel/dirt about 200 yards.
The first comment made from one of the original founders is the best description to the end of a great day of wheeling. "This is better than an 'E' Ticket ride at Disneyland! It's wheel'n the luge!"
This trail is definitely for the "extreme" vehicle as well as an experienced driver. Lockers are required and 33" tires and maximum clearance are a must.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!
NOTE: 2/17/02 - I (Stu Olson) ran the trail yesterday and I believe it is safe to say that there is not much of a chance to "run the luge" anymore. I could be mistaken, but few (any?) would survive the drop into the luge. It is extrememly erroded now and the old bypass is now the main path down, IMO.

Unless I've totally missed the mark, the CJ-7 has a
10" longer WB and TUB. This is where the extra room
comes from to get the door opening wider. (Actually,
I understand the point was to cram an automatic under
it.) There is not room between the back/bottom of the
CJ-5 door opening and the wheel well to cut a 7 size
opening.

Well, I don't drink alcohol and all the runs that I have been on with other people from other groups have been alcohol free.I haven't been on any other runs as of yet with AZVJC but I hope to soon. I don't see any point in drinking there are so many other ways to "relax" .... I know that most of you are now going to think that I hate people that drink...I DON'T!! Please don't get that idea. I don't drink that's all there is to it.
I lost six good friends in High School. One was killed on the way home from a dance. She was 15 and my lab partner... The guy walked away with out a scratch... 4 of my friends were killed in one car 2 months before Graduation.... They were dropping off one of my friend at their house and were hit by a kid who was over 2x the legal limit...My other friend was so drunk he fell out of his truck more than once trying to get in... People watched him drive off ... He hit a another car and then a light pole He was thrown from his truck..The person in the car survived (the only good thing that came from that).. what's the point of drinking? I cant find one and choose not to drink... If you drink that's up to you but please don't drive!!!

I hope that someday, when I need
another one (when I put the 38" tires on), someone will help me out. ;)

I have never done anything with the driveshaft before. Is it fairly
easy to disconnect. I haven't even really looked at how this comes
out yet. I am comfortable with the JB conversion now I think. No

Later,

I went to Friendly Jeep and Chrysler in Glendale and got a 37 tooth for
$15.40! Tera who?????? Another good example of why I'll never have a
teraflex part on my jeep. I have no idea if it is off or on. I do know
it's closer, as I'm not doing 90 on the freeway. Easy fix, thanks Stu.
The only issue is the shift light coming on in 5th gear David

That trail is CLOSED. The BLM is watching that canyon very closely
and will probably not open it for the next Jambo since people are
still running it against their closure. Next thing you know there

Is the hand throttle?
I also never mentioned RE. I love my "over-engineered" (quote form a

I did however display my distaste for Tera. So we could debate that

Let's not be prejudice because I have an RE lift.
I have many disheartening encounters with teraflex. And this was
another example. I have given them plenty of opportunities to take my
money.

And RE sells a hand throttle that cost $30 but can be made for about
$8. Hmmmmmm three times the cost????!!!! What's the point? Does RE
suck because of the hand throttle?

Subject: Re: CJ5/CJ7 Body Conversion

I'll tell you this right now!!! If anyone is drinking and driving, I
consider them a complete moron and idiot!! I've lost too many friends to
people who have been drinking and driving, and I know the other side as
well. Not from personal experience thank god, but from people that have come
thru our halfway house!!! It's your choice to be the idiot and put other
people in harms way!!! If you feel this is great and it's no bodies
business but your own, your right. It's all fun and games until someone
gets hurt or killed and your sitting in a prison for a few years wondering
what the hell you did to deserve this. If you ask me, your only looking for
a pitty party. Isn't one of the rules of this club, NO DRINKING ON THE
TRAIL????? I see where this stands with everyone!!
OK, I'll go back into my little quiet corner. But I just had to vent at the
Assenine attitude of drinking while on the trails!! To each his own I
guess!!!
just my opinion....now I'll behave!!

Subject: Draging the Toyota out THIS Saturday
Ok guys,
We are going to meet at 8:30 am and roll out at 9:00 am on Saturday.
We have a couple of torches, a trailer or 2, my brother is coming out
with his trailer, cutting torch, and 4x4 quad with a winch.
Everyone, make sure you bring a pair of gloves, maybe some trash
bags, lunch, water, maybe a shovel and rake too. Glad to see so many
of us willing to help.
