Hi Leah,

I am ready to do Charouleau Gap again -- going north to south! Awesome Trail! I ran this trail with the Tucson Rough Riders and the National Trail Symposium in early November. Awesome!

I love exploring. Where we go doesn't matter as long as it gets me away
from the city. BTW, if any group members feel that they can't go camping
because they would have to choose between passengers and equipment (that's
my only complaint about the "little" Jeeps -- cargo space!), I would be
happy to volunteer my truck as the official pack mule.

I sent an earlier e-mail Sunday night but it didn't make it. Wrong address. I wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed myself Sunday! I'll get some pictures soon. I look forward to this Saturday's. I always wanted to see an old mine so I wouldn't mind checking those out but also a picture of the coke ovens I saw really intrigued me! 9am would be cool. I'm game for a Friday night to Sunday night trip also. I do have a 3 person tent. And the jeep to get there with :)

Hey everybody, I just posted this to the newsgroups,
and thought I'd post it here too. Hope it isn't
a no no... BTW: My poor Jeeps transmission is finally
rebuilt and will be going back into the Jeep this
weekend (finally.) Today's hint: Always remember to
check your fluids after water crossings, even if you
didn't think it was very deep. Emulsified gear oil
is -NOT- cool.

For Sale: Four BFG All Terrains, 33X12.50, 15s.
These tires are nearly brand new (<1500 miles).

I'm going up to 35s, so I don't need them. Discount
wants me to take a bath on them, so I thought I'd
try to sell them here. I'm in PHX, AZ. I'm looking
for about $60 apiece ($240,) or the best offer.

9am at Price Rd entrance sounds good. With all this rain, Martinez Mine should be really nice. I can also show y'all the entrances to the Surprise and Upper Woodpecker Trails. The Gila River should be fordable if we decide to go to the Coke Ovens. This will shorten the trip to pavement (or at least to a well graded dirt highway).

I think we will be running Upper Woodpecker on New Years Day as our 2nd Annual New Years Day Trail Ride. I'll keep the group posted.

OK. The concensus is at 9a at Price Rd, just north of Florence...for
this Saturday.

Directions -

From Phoenix, Mesa, Glendale, etc:
-Take US60 east to Florence Junction

-Go south on SR79, toward Florence

-Just north of Florence, you'll cross RR tracks

-Immediately after the tracks will be Price Rd to the east (left).
It's a dirt road, and you'll see a sign for a gravel operation. If you
cross the Gila, you went too far.

-We'll assemble there - at Price Rd.

-----------------------------------------------
From southeast valley:

-Take SR87 east toward Coolidge. SR87 can be accessed from Az Av. (which
actually is SR87) or Gilbert Road south to it's intersection w/ SR87.

-At the north end of Coolidge, continue straight...over the bridge, on
SR287 toward Florence (SR87 turns south into Coolidge, which is not
where you want to go). BTW, just before this intersection, look to the
south and you'll see the Casa Grande ruins in the distance.

-At the "T", on the outskirts of Florence, go left (north) and follow
the signs to SR79 North. You'll be making a turn to the east (right) on
the Main drag. You'll see the dome of the historic Pinal County Court
House on your left (north), after aout a block or so.

-BTW, you can top off in Florence, just before you hit downtown. It's a
very small down town, but kinda neat.

-Turn left onto SR79 North, and go a fairly short distance to Price Rd,
which will be on your right (east), just after you cross the Gila. If
you go over the RR tracks, you just passed it.

------------------------------------------------
From Tuscon (just in case):

-Take SR79 (Tom Mix Highway) North from Oracle Junction to Florence.
Continue north till you cross the Gila, and Price Rd. will be on your
right (just before the RR tracks).

--------------------------------------------
See you there!

Subject: Satellite Imagery Database

Since I've brought up exploring unknown trails, I've found a web site that has
satellite images of much of AZ (the world actually).

Try:

http://www.terraserver.microsoft.com/default.htm

You can use the map or punch in Lat/Lon coordinates to get satellite images of
much of AZ, though mostly National Forest areas. Tonto NF is well covered as
well as many areas south and east of Phoenix.

You can view resolutions from 16 m/pixel to 1 m/pixel. These are good enough
to see backcountry trails, so you can find out if a trail you think might be
there actually exists.

If you try this, I recommend you use Lat/Lon coordinates to pick an area. And
instead of downloading the images, use a screen capture utility. Downloading
takes a very long time, and you get a compressed file that doesn't have near
the quality of what you saw on screen.

Have fun!

Also check the throttle position sensor. I experienced the same symptoms -- low engine idle and occassional stalling. My ZJ has the I-6 4.0l. The TPS is located on the throttle body and is nothing more than a variable resistor (or potentiometer to those more electrically inclined).

You will need a multimeter for testing the TPS and the CPS. These are handy devices and worth the $30-40.

TPS test
The test is checking the sensor output voltage at idle (throttle plate closed) and when the throttle plate is wide open. At idle the sensor output must be greater than 200mV. At wide open, the sensor output must be less than 4.8V. Ouput voltage should increase gradually as throttle plate is opened gradually.

CPS test:
1) Near rear of the the intake manifold, disconnect the sensor pigtail harness connecotr from the main wiring harness.
2) Place an Ohmmeter across the center and right terminals (B and C). The meter readin g should be open (no resistance). Replace the sensor if resistance is indicated.

Darner Jeep will charge you $100 for a driveability test, another $50 for diagnosing the problem, and another $50 for a new part. This happened to me even though I told the service guy what the problem was in advance (I got the service manual before I bought the ZJ so I was prepared!) The ZJ was still under the used car warranty when the TPS went out, but I had already had it in the dealership several times to fix things they should have fixed before they put it out on the sales lot and I think they were getting tired of dealing with me. I ended up paying for it.

Another tidbit: You might consider purchasing a spare ignition coil and keep it handy. I hear there is a TSB on the coils used on the 4.0l engines. Don't waste your money buying one from the dealership.

Good Luck!
Linda
