I just got a new laptop, and despite all my reservations, it was loaded with Vista. Among all the other "challenges" with the new OS, when I installed my Garmin software (Metroguide and TOPO versions), updated to the newest MapSource software from the website, the program would only run properly after re-running the updater. I sent a request with the problem to Garmin tech support, and today (about 10 hours later) got this:

To get the program to open, right click
on your Mapsource icon and select properties. In the properties window
select the compatibility tab and check the box to run program as
administrator. Click apply and then ok. The program should run
correctly after this. Please make sure the device you are sending to is
the gps in the device window. I would also recommend reseating the card
in the unit.

I can confirm that this resolved all my issues with my Garmin software and I can now work with both my GPS units on Vista, in MetroGuide and TOPO.

Better service I couldn't ask for!

Good to know Garmin works at all w/ Vista. I am in need of a new laptop and with all the "specialty" software I run, speach recognition, Ham radio programming, mapping sofware, etc. I am scared of Vista. I did see Newegg.com had some new HP's with XP on them still. I may go that way.
