Welcome to the club Leah! My days as a Wildcat were spent driving a
sportscar, so I didn't get to explore much of the area around Tucson. I'm
up for a few trips down south. Anyone else up for some overnighters?

I'm almost always up for camping. Was crazy enough to go once when it
dipped down to 10 degrees. Man, was THAT cold.

Don't complain too much. Has anyone heard from Nick? Or have his
fingers thawed off the steering wheel yet?
For those who didn't make it, Nick exhibited the best in Arizona 'tude,
as he showed all of us that it really doesn't get TOO cold in AZ, by
running almost the entire trail without a top. He finally conceded to
putting the bikini top on his YJ when the snow piled up too high on his
lap, I think.
He wasn't able to stick around with us to thaw out at Edwardo's in
Superior, but that may have been a wise choice. Coming from Colorado
myself, I know the last thing you want to do after thawing out is to get
back outside to drive an hour home.
...Anyway, an overnighter down south sounds good, after it warms a bit.

Check the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Located at 10:00 on th
ebellhousing when viewed from the rear, this seems to be the mythical
answer to everybody's 4.0L problems. You can remove it with the help of
24" of socket extensions, or go for the cheap fix. The CPS has a pigtail
about 12" long that extends up the rear of the engine and wraps around
the back of the valve cover. I believe the most common fix I have heard
is to unplug this for 30 seconds, and then reconnect the sensor. This
should work as a temporary workaround. However, if this does seem to
make the Jeep run better, you just eliminated the opportunity to buy that
K+N filter, upgrade the ignition, and so on. Good luck to you, hope you
can get it going before next Saturday.

Ouch. The earlier D44 had a slightly weaker axle than the post-71
models, but I'm not sure that would hold up to the powertrain you have
driving this CJ. A Dana 60 or some of the GMC 3/4 and 1-ton offerings
may be a little more well-behaved. The 5.38 gears are multiplying the
torque that the 400 loves to put out, and it's destroyng your axles.
Just keep in mind that if you strengthen the axles, there will be another
part that will break somewhere else down the line (U-joint, driveshaft,
etc)

Subject: Box Canyon Run
For this Saturday's run, there have been 2 suggestions for start
time...8a and 9a. What are the preferences of those planning on going?
As to a rally point, I suggested Price Rd, just north of Florence, if
that's ok. Another suggestion was up at Florence Junction, which I won't
make, since I'll be coming through Coolidge and Florence. So I think
Price Rd may be the best option here. I posted directions earlier, but
if anyone has any questions on how to gt thee, let me know and I'll
repost.
As to trail options, there are quite a few. I would like to get into
Martinez, and make it up to the old Mill. We could then back track to do
the Coke Ovens or find Woodpecker trail (Linda described it to me, so I
think I can find it). Woodpecker's supposed to be quite challenging, and
I'd like to find it and explore a little. If we head for the Coke Ovens,
we could (if we want to), continue on into the White Canyon area, and
exit south of Superior on SR177. This option will get us back fairly
late.
As to trail rating:
Box Canyon - 3
Martinez - 2to3; with 4 to the old Mill (just up the canyon aways
and back - there's a really nice picknic area for those
that don't want to go on to the mill). There is also
trail which heads up a hill from the mine camp (picnic
area) to some mines, which I've never explored. We could
check that out, also.
Coke Ovens - 3, with a small ledge at the beginning that can be
a little challenging (I was able to do this w/ a
stock Blazer, so all could make it).
Woodpecker - I've not done this, but from what I've heard, it's a 3-4
w/ maybe even some 5. For those who get JP magazine, take
a look at page 90 in the current edition (bottom
picture). This obsticle can be bypassed (whew).
We can always figure things out when we get there. This is really a
wonderful place for 4 wheeling, with MANY options.
Hope to see you there.

I would love to go on the Box Canyon run! I have to back out
this time as the Tucson Rough Riders are having the
Christmas Party on the same day. I'll try to make the next run
whatever it is! Oh! By the way I did Box Canyon~Coke Ovens
last October, This was a very long trip as we went in by
Florence and out by Kearny. Beautiful scenery/sunset! Some
minor challenges to stock Jeeps, but no damages! Have a great
time!

Subject: re: stalling Jeep
Hi Dan
I've checked here at work for information on your Jeep. Unfortunately, the
only Jeep fuel injection information I have was published in 1994, so it
doesn't include your model year. I would be happy to fax you the info I
have, though. If you get this while I'm at work, just reply with a fax
number and I'll send it your way. If you don't have a fax, the first things
you will want to look at are the fuel filter, Idle Air Control Motor,
Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor, Throttle Position Sensor, and possibly
the Powertrain Control Module. The PCM is the brain of the whole
operation, so look at it last. If it is bad, most likely the truck wouldn't
run at all. The Idle Air Control controls the amount of airflow inside the
throttle body by-pass passage to control idle speed. The MAP sensor is used
to calibrate the air/fuel mixture, and sends different voltage signals to
the PCM based on manifold vacuum. The TPS tells the PCM how far open the
throttle is so that the PCM can adjust fuel delivery and timing.
Any of these devices could produce the symptoms you describe. I would start
by replacing the fuel filter and using a can of Slick 50 fuel system
cleaner. I've used this cleaner before and it works very well. If this
doesn't fix it, a long afternoon with a DVOM is in order to troubleshoot
your fuel and ignition system.
hope this helps......

Thought I'd toss in my $0.02 for this recent thread.
Yes, most of us are in the Phoenix area, but that's by chance not design.
Anyone can join, even out-of-state-ers. We've only run trails in AZ so far,
but there's no reason we can't organize a trip some weekend to Moab or Rubicon
or somewhere out of state.
I'd like to explore more to the South as suggested, but I don't know any
trails out that way. Of course, that's one of the reasons we formed this
group, because there really isn't much information about trails in AZ. There's
Deuty's book, all of which are in central AZ. Occasionally Arizona Highways
has a trail report - they had an article on the Cherry Creek Road last month.
Occasionally an off-road magazine or Jp magazine might have an article.
I'm looking at a large shaded relief map of AZ on my wall, and it looks like
there must be a number of trails south and east. There are basins there that
dwarf the Tonto Basin, like Aravaipa, Gila Valley, Sulpher Springs Valley, and
the San Pedro river valley, and of course mountains in between. My DeLorme
Atlas shows these areas riddled with possible trails.
But since these aren't well documented, we'll have to go exploring on our own.
Exploring the unknown is fun, but you might not find anything interesting, so
you have to be willing to accept that and look elsewhere. For example Doug and
I have searched a couple of times for a thus far mythical passage from Reno
Pass to Four Peaks. Haven't found it yet, and haven't much more than fresh AZ
pinstriping to show for it, but its been fun and we aren't done yet. We did
find one excellent trail with a great campsite.
Exploration probably requires an overnight trip. This gives you extra
flexibility to turn around, retrace your tracks and try another route if the
first was impassible (or boring) and explore a number of other trails in an
area.
And who knows, we may find some superlative showcase trails that hardly anyone
knows about. There must be hundreds of little known but excellent trails out
there. And if we found such a hidden treasure, would I add it to my web site?
Mebbie not.
I'm always up for an overnight camping trip. We could take our trusty Atlas,
pick a few likely trails, invest in a few Topos and head on out. South is good
this time of year, although I'd like to see some snow actually.
So if you have any ideas south, either east into the mountains or west into
the desert plains, just propose them and we'll give it a shot.

You took the words right out of my mouth! I love back country exploring.
Sometimes you strike out (rarely) and sometimes you hit pay dirt
(often).
I, also, would be up for overnights and extended trips. Maybe this
spring or summer, we could plan a trip to Moab. Also, there are great
trails (I've heard) south and east to Tuscon. We also could make a trip
up to Jerome. There is a member up there, and he's indicated there are
great trails there also. Perhaps this summer, when it's too hot down in
the Valley.

Have a great
time!

If we are going to meet at Price Road, per Doug's (daballard) directions, I
vote for meeting at 9:00 a.m. It's probably close to a 1.5 hour drive for me,
coming from Cactus / 25th Street.

Perhaps this summer, when it's too hot down in
the Valley.
