Subject: [TR] Trip Report - South End White Tanks Area - Sunday, March 3, 2002
Hello All,
Gary Oglesby lead a trail run Sunday, March 3, 2002 across South End White Tanks Area
We had a rather interesting trip. Started out on Watson Road where we had our first incident. Gary H. in his full size Cherokee had a problem with his ignition. Got it bypassed and he decided not to chance it and go home. So John K. in his souped up Toyota Landcruiser (wow) and I (Gary O. in my stock Cherokee) decided to head on up to the sand hill. We met another guy on the trail James (i think) in his Dodge Durango which also trailed on with us. Played on the sand hills where I showed everyone up (yeah right). James came within about 1 foot of my front end after coming over a hill at a pretty good speed. Whew, I could have used a sweat rag for that one. I have to say, John with his Hunter Offroad Products really showed us up. (like the plug?) That's as far as we went, just wanted to take it easy for the day... Then went back to Love's Truck stop to air up and ended up fighting for space with the Semi Trucks to get air... John and I pushed them out of the way!!!

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Turkey Creek - Sunday, March 3, 2002
Hello All,
Jason LaLiberty lead a trail run Sunday, March 3, 2002 across Turkey Creek
Wow, what a day. We had 14 when things were all said and done. Bob Peck was the only no show. Damn no cookies! I have to admit I was a little nervous about time with such a big group. We hit the airdown spot about 9:30am. The Creek was dry, Not like the time I ran it last time, Eh Joey? Just kiddn' Everyone made it through the first two major obsticles with no problems. About lunch time Keith B. was kind enough to have a slight clutch linkage problem to give us an excuse to stop for lunch! A quick trail repair by Keith and Joe and we were off again. About 5 of us took a bumpy route down the was to play on some good size boulders. John K. was enjoying his new 4.56's and ARB's on the rocks. After the boulders we stopped at the cave just off the trail. Bob had told us about the ringtailed cat that lived in the cave. It was still there. Posted some pictures of it. After we reached the "parking lot" We decided a few decided to do some posing for the camera! We turned around after and decided to head back the way we came. The group hit the airdown spot about 3:30pm. Overall it was a great run. Lot's of play areas. Get this, I even let the Wife drive about half of the day! I was hoping it would help me convince her of all the other toys I need for the jeep! Great run, thanks to all who came!

Subject: axle swap done!
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to send out a great big public thank you to Chris
Krieg, Stu Olson and Joe West for helping me out today with my axle
swap. The project took pretty much all day but went without a hitch
for the most part. My TJ now has a brand new Dana 44 in the rear with
4.10 gears, the beefy 33 spline super 44 shafts and an ox locker!
The front 4.10's and ox locker are being installed in my Dana 30 on
Tuesday by 4 wheeler's supply. I will also be having them install my
new JB conversions SYE and CV driveshaft to cure my serious driveline
vibes. After that my Jeep will be done with mods for a while as I
have officially depleted all of my Jeep funds.
Maybe now I can join some of you big dogs on some more challenging
trails.
Thanks again guys for spending your Sunday wrenching on my Jeep!

Nick,
I am not being picky but the Knuckle is a replacable part. I think
you may be refering to the Axle Yoke which is fastened to the axle
tube. The Knuckle is held into the Yoke by the upper and lower Ball
Joints. If the lower ball joint stud is ground off you should be able
to replace this as it is also a replaceable part which is pressed
out, and then you press in a new one. As long as the Yoke has not
been damaged or cracked you should be able to repair this at a
resonable cost.

Hey Jason,
I am currently running 35's with 4.88's Superior gears on my yj
4cyl manual,if you don't plan on running bigger tires, the 4.56's
should suit you nicely. If you plan on going bigger go for the
4.88's.I got my 5th gear back and my gas mileage increased with the
4.88's.With the 4.88's,it will allow you to run up to a 36in tire and
it should allow you to keep that 5th gear for the highway,I'll let
you know since i am haveing my 36 12.50x15 put on tomorrow, also you
don't have to change the carrier with the 4.10,4.56,4.88. Good luck
with your choice of gears. If you need to know alittle more info talk
to Barry at 4 wheelers offroad and supply down on washington.

James,
I assume your refering to the hard lines that come from the center
of the axle where they attach to the line coming down from the
crossmember of the jeep, & go to each brake drum?
If so, these are really easy. Especally with the axle out. I've done
mine & a friends. All you need is the line from Checker or Pepboys
with the correct fitting (i think its 1/8 or 3/16 tube)& the "T" for
the center connection. Its simple to cut the line to length & re-
flair the fitting ends. As far as the bending goes, as long as your
careful not to kink the line its easily done by hand.
Dan Coley has my flairing & cutting tools, I think he's done with
them. He lives in Tempe. Your welcome to get them from him if you
want to try doing it yourself. I can give you pretty good directions
or we could meet some afternoon & I can show you what to do I'm in

Well I am opening up a big bag of worms here but her it goes anyway. The Arizona Dust Devils is a small organized club and small clubs seem to be more family like. The Arizona Virtual Jeep Club is not a club it is more of a forum and a very large one at that. In large forums you get what I call the keyboard warrior. That is people that do not care to help and seem to get a kick out of there keyboard heroics by flaming others. I could go on about this but I think you get the idea. There are many in the AZVJC that are very much willing to help and to those this email is not intended for. When you have a large forum like the AZVJC you will always have some bad apples that can bring down the image of the forum.
Mike the best advice I can give you is to treat responses like what you received as tongue and cheek. Just consider the source and blow it off.

I would like to relay some statistics. Last night I sent a simple post to the AZVJC (Un-Organized) and to the Arizona Dust Devils (organized) forums requesting input on axles for the front Dana 30 on my CJ. Thru 2 pm today I have received ONE reply from the 1000+ AZVJC members and it was a smartass/comedic comment telling me to buy a Dana 60. From the Arizona Dust Devils 27 members I have received 4 responses with suggestions, personal experiences or questions, but no smart ***/comedic remarks. I got the same type of statistical response when I have asked other questions. Is the problem that I have a CJ and of the 1000 or so members of THE AZVJC there are very few CJ's . Or are my questions to stupid to warrant an intelligent response. This may be just an anomaly, but I am starting to get a complex. Just curios if anyone else experiences this kind of thing. Based on these statistics I would conclude that organized is better than un-organized.

In my opinion, 4.88 gears are a bit too much for a vehicle with 33" tires

65 MPH is not accurate. I would not do more than 4.56 gears.

My 8.8 should be installed by 3/13, so I need to get rid of the D35c coming out of my 1999 TJ. It will be complete to the "T" hose, where it connects to the body side brake line, ebrake cables &; drum-to-drum. 3.73 gears &; an ARB locker were professionally installed 14 months ago, I have never broken an axle with it or had any other problems with this setup. Well I am almost done again. Transfer case is rebuilt with 4:1 and HD output
shaft, I also clocked it up. I made a new cross member and shoved everything
up. This has netted me near 7" more ground clearance underneath. Since I did
all that my current rear driveline could not be used so I installed a Currie
HP 9" third member with a spool and 4:88 gears. This also helped my drive
line angle. My U-joints went from 12.5 deg. to 7.5deg. My drive shaft went
from 25deg angle to 15 deg angle. The only thing left to do is get the rear
drive shaft shortened by 1.5" and I am taking it in today. Should be ready
to hit the trails by this weekend with a 133:1 crawl ratio!!

My local radio club here in the Heber/Overgaard area has it's mile of highway on state route 260 to keep clean, (Rim Country Amateur Radio Club Sponsorship). We usually do this three or four times a year.
Anyway, Of all the beer cans and bottles we pick up on every trip, it seems that Bud Light is America's favorite beer to drink and then throw the empty out the window. Consistently over the last 3 years, 90 to 98% of beer cans/bottles we pick up are Bud Light. As you drive down the trail, and pick up the empties you see, I would suspect that Bud Light is the hands down favorite or does drinking Bud Light make you stupid?

Hello All,
Gary Oglesby lead a trail run Sunday, March 3, 2002 across South End White Tanks Area

Hello All,
Jason LaLiberty lead a trail run Sunday, March 3, 2002 across Turkey Creek

The brackets show some sign of rock rash, nothing that makes them non-functional.

Subject: Almost back on the trails

Randy,
Your new driveline sounds great. Question. What's a spool?

Subject: OT Trivia Beer Drinkers
