Darn! You're right. I found it on page 20-2 Muffler Bearing Service. But
it looks like Jeep switched to a permanently sealed bearing style so
greasing is no longer needed. But there's no mention of axle wraps,
perhaps those are in the recipe section of the FSM... LOL!!!

Subject: tires and trails
Well, I did upper Terminator and then Judgement Day today with Bob and Aaron. Judgement Day is right off the end of UT and is quite a trail - easily a 4.5. It is a bit longer than most of the Table Mesa (that's redundant, you know) area runs and has tons of rocks and maybe 5 waterfalls of varying sizes. One of them is a doozie - vertical shale that sluffs off after every attempt so the waterfall is a bit different each run - there are 2 or 3 alternates to this waterfall (all smaller waterfalls) and we all had to opt for an alternate with one of us taking a winch (guess who). Great trail and about the limit of my rig and driving capability - if you haven't done it surely add it to your list.
Anyway, I tore the sidewalls on 2 of my ProComp mudders. And. that is after bragging about how trouble free they have been - I should know better. The first was about a 3 inch tear and the tire is a goner. The other (about 10 minutes later had a 1" tear and there I was, now without a spare. Bob and I both had a set of those tubeless plugs that you can use for punctures. So, we basically filled the tear with about 5 of the suckers and re-filled the tire while on the Jeep. It held enough to get me the rest of the way out Judgement Day and then back to the staging area. No small feat, I might add. Upon checking the plugs they all popped out in a bunch and the tire started to deflate again. I put my finger in the dike and then re-plugged the tear. As I was airing up I ran out of CO2 so I had uneven air in all 4 tires. Aaron and Bob went back to do Predator and Raw Deal (they wanted this to be a full day) and I limped to the Anthem exit of I17. I went to the Mobil station and checled my air and the torn tire seemed yo be holding. So, I limped the rest of the way home - 32 more miles. I took back roads when possible and got home with still no air loss.
Now, two things. If you don't carry those squishy little black plugs for tire repair do yourself a favor - add them to your repair kit list. I'm a believer.. They were amazing at plugging a tear enough to get me home. Second, I am now in the market for a couple of new tires - these don't have road hazard and they have 20K miles on them anyway. The 2 front ones are fine - I would like to get 2 new ProComps but the newer model. Any problem running different tires front and rear if they are basically the same? Stu?? Please answer me. (joking)

Chris,
Your ProComp is covered in oil because of the crack in your oil pan.

I think my ProComp one is going bad too. It seems to be covered in oil. Maybe ProComp ones are not that great.

Rick,
I have yet to wear one out on my 98 TJ. I ran the factory unit until last March, when I put the 35" tires on. I then installed a Rancho 5000 stabilizer which is still on now.
Do your stabilizers simply start leaking or do they just stop dampening?

I am getting ready to purchase yet another steering stabilizer for my 98TJ (3" Tera, 33x12.5 gymtr). This is my 3rd. Is it pretty common to blow these shocks? The last one was procomp es3000. Is there a sturdier brand?

If you have a factory setup.... no.
If you are lifted, it's not a bad idea.
Go down to a hardware store and purchase some conduit clamps (steel, not
aluminum). They work perfectly, and are 6 cents each.

I know how to solve that problem... I just bring my own pot and campstove

I consider hot coffee to be as essential as a locker...

Your ProComp is covered in oil because of the crack in your oil pan.

Rick,
I have yet to wear one out on my 98 TJ.

Gee whiz John....this is one I can answer without being a moron, an *****....well, I'll let it go at that.
I ran two new and two old 35" MT/Rs for almost a full year. I recently ditched the old ones (one took a 1/4" socket extension through the tread) and got two new ones. So, I am running two new MT/Rs on the front and a pair of one year old ones on the rear. No problems that I can notice....they work just fine.
So...YES is your answer....get two new ones and put them on!

Subject: [az_vjc] tires and trails
(joking)

I have not hear of any closures around the White Tanks area. The area to
the east of it, which is the old Caterpillar Proving Grounds has been
illegally ran by OHVs for many years and they are cracking down on that (I'm
glad to see that happening). In fact, I was coming down off of the top of
the mountain (from doing maintenance on a radio site we have there) and the
Buckeye Police in a rather ratty looking 4x4 pickup stopped me and
questioned what I was doing (he was just doing his job). Once he found out
that I was returning from the working on the radio site, he bid me a good
day and left. I proceeded down the trail and out the front gate.
A couple of us wheeled Tax Collector a few weeks ago. I saw no signs, etc.,
indicating any closures. The land that was recently added to the White
Tanks Regional Park was on the far west side of the mountain range. It has
no impact on the regular trails that are used at the Southern end of the
range.

Hello All,
Gary Oglesby is leading a South End White Tanks Area trail run on Sunday, March 3, 2002.
When: 1:00pm
Where: Meet @ Williams Truck Stop on 99th Ave. Just south of I-10
Rating: 2.0+
Length: 4-5 hours
CB Channel: 5
Exploring the area. Up to about 2.5 trail rating. I have a stock jeep, anyone that wants to come along and do more than that feel free. Anyone that's been to the area before would also be greatly appreciated!!! Hope to get into the sand out there.
The South end of the White Tanks has a variety of trails for exploration. Cutting through the top is an old powerline trail that goes from the old Catapillar test track all the way out to the Hassayampa Riverbed.
There are also numerous washes to explore, the furthure up the washes you go the tougher they get. There are a variety of side trails and hill climbs to try as well as a large hill of sand left over from when they were building I-10.
Some of the Named Trails in the area include:
Appetizer
Firebird
Tax Collector

Gee whiz John....this is one I can answer without being a moron, an *****....well, I'll let it go at that.
I ran two new and two old 35" MT/Rs for almost a full year. I recently ditched the old ones (one took a 1/4" socket extension through the tread) and got two new ones. So, I am running two new MT/Rs on the front and a pair of one year old ones on the rear. No problems that I can notice....they work just fine.
So...YES is your answer....get two new ones and put them on!

Subject: [az_vjc] tires and trails
(joking)

(joking)

Rick,
I have yet to wear one out on my 98 TJ.

Have fun and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Eee-gads! A vacation in AZ in the summer? What are you thinking, man?
You do know it will be an inferno, don't you? Of course, it will be a
