We always take our own rocks with us to stack our way through.....LOL. Just kidding, we went and played around on Gilamonster and gathered up some rocks for the front yard.

Subject: installing a new rear?

The drums on my stock rear end (a dana 44) are pretty much screwed and it's
got a lot of miles on it. I froze the diff over the last winter after
filling it up with water. Last week I got a killer deal on a rear, the
whole lot axles, brakes, diff etc, fully assembled and brand new from the
factory with seals still on it; US$150.

This rear is the wide track version, it's 2" wider than stock. Am I going
to have any problems running a wider rear with a stock front? Is there
anything I should change while I'm down there? I'm going to change my
Bushings over to poly while I've got the springs off, is there anything
else worth changing? Should I go with new U-joints? They don't have any
play in them, but they're pretty high mile (about 150,000 miles). Any
other tips for installing a new rear? I'm hoping to get it done on Sunday....

Thanks,

Subject: turning brakes?Baja Fleg?

Has anyone out there installed turning brakes in their rig? I'd like to
install some and have an opportunity to buy some from the states; one of my
students will be there next week for 5 days or so. I've combed the web,
but I'm obviously looking in the wrong places, the only thing I've found is
catalogs.
Has anyone put turning brakes in their rig? I've got power brakes, nothing
special, no ABS, only drum on the rear. I'm looking at the hydraulic style
turning brakes and I've got some questions;

Does any turning brake work with any rig? Am I likely to have trouble
getting this sucker to work?

I've only seen Jamar and CNC models, which of the 2 is better? Jamar seems
more common.

Is a single or dual lever preferred generally? I am totally in favor of a
single upright lever, however if someone can point out an advantage of a
dual lever or flat lever setup I'd be willing to consider it.

Am I likely to have problems with plumbing? Do I need special
hoses/fittings? I'll have to buy them at the same time with no chance to
go back later and buy more since I live in South Korea.

Do these things cause any problems with normal on-road braking?

Thanks again, and I'd appreciate a speedy reply........ my student will
only be there from monday to Friday and I'll have to have it delivered to
her by then....

You could run it with rear rims with more b/s to bring them in a bit. Only
problem would be with a spare, but in a pinch, your spare (with the normal
b/s) would just stick out temporarily.

I had the same problem on my CJ, I used screw extractors on the windshield hinge bolts to get them out. They are available at home depot. They will require you to drill the bolt head in order to get the extractor to bite into the bolt. Be careful not to break the extractor since it is much harder than the drill bits and will be nearly impossible to remove.

When I purchased my '89 wrangler it came with chrome winshield hinges and many other goodies that needed to be added. I'm having a problem removing some of the bolts on the old hinges. Some were a snap to get out, but others are a PITA. I've soaked all of them with penatrating oil and have used a punch (3/8" dive that turns when hit with a BFH). A few of the bolts turn but won't come out. Others won't even budge. I'm getting close to taking the jeep to a 4x4 shop to see if they can work some magic. Drilling them out seems risky. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Side Note: I've been a lurker for the past six months or so. As I get more experience with all aspects of jeeping I feel I will be able to post informed replys to others questions. To me, this is a great club with many unique people who have a lot to share and are sometimes very opinionated. People are correct when they say, "you get out of it what you put in to it". I believe this club is strong due to its original ideas and founding principles. Why try to be like everybody else?

Subject: RE: Many questions about mods

Hi there,

Well, how hard are you going to wheel. I think if you ask many people
around here you will find that their Dana 35's eventually give up the
ghost....especially with 35" tires. I ran 35" tires for two years with no
lockers and stock axles...had no problems. But the stresses get much
greater when you start using lockers. Many people continue to have good
luck with their TJ Dana 30's...most likely due to the Dana 44 sized
u-joints.

As far as the spare tire carrier...the weight of that 35" spare (assuming
you have a full size spare) will quickly destroy the original tire carrier
and weaken the tailgate. Some sort of aftermarket setup is definitely
advised.

The lockers you choose depend on how picky you are about on road driving
habits. I prefer a Detroit in the rear and a lockright up front. This does
change the way the vehicle drives quite a bit, but the offroad capabilities
outway the negatives in my mind...and they really aren't that bad. ARB's
and OX lockers allow people to only engage them when needed...but can
sometimes be problematic (air lines and such).

For gears... 4.56 should be a decent gear ratio to match your tire size
(given that you are running the stock tranny and t-case). This would pretty
much bring you back into the range of stock ratio. But, since you probably
have overdrive (5th gear if manual tranny) you may want to bump up one more
to 4.88 for a bit more uumph.

One peice of advice. Try to avoid incrementalism. Think about what you
might be doing with your Jeep 5 years down the road and build it for that.
It may cost a bit more up front...but saves you a bunch in the end.

just dealt with this problem on my 89 wrangler. The reason they spin is
because these are just bolts with nuts (not screwed into the body). the
nuts are partially hidden in the spray on foam insulation (it's painted
the color of the tub) behind the dash. I drilled off the heads and
punched the remaining portion of the screw, still threaded into the nut,
through the foam insulation, with a hammer and punch. It's to much of a
pain to try and scrape the foam off the nuts so you can hold them with a
wrench.
good luck,

I didn't want you to think you were being ignored. This is why I usually
don't respond to many of the posts....I don't have answers worth posting.
So, this was kind of a show and tell for those that think I am ignoring them
on purpose. ;)

DON'T buy the Fosgate MP3 player!!!! I have it and when you play
regular CDs it skips like crazy on slightly rough roads... when
playing MP3s on a disc however I can pretty much play them on
washboard dirt roads with out a prob. -Rob

Mark,
Check out www.jeepersandcreepers.com. That's where I got my control
arms and they had the best prices around with free shipping and no
tax. Give them a call and ask for James. He is a great guy and really
knows his stuff.

Darren,

Flexy Joe @ Roosevelt Alignment is definitely the guy to see.

Well, I'm only guessing it's the caster angle that is causing the jeep
tires to turn the wrong way in a tight turn (like maneuvering in a
parking lot). But that's the only place I ever have a problem. I've
probably flat-towed the jeep about 4000 miles with no problems so far.
In fact, I'm trying to wear down the Dunlop All-terrains so I can get
something with a more aggressive tread, but they just refuse to wear
out!

If I were to get the caster angle checked out, where would be the best
place to take the Jeep? Is that a job for Roosevelt Alignment?

FJ, I just put the new Holley off road carb on it. It will be a good
test. You want to go?
