Subject: Re: windshield hinges - club thoughts

I just removed these bolts yesterday to put on a set
of mirror relocation brackets so that I could take my
doors off :-P.

PITA is not the word...I didn't realize that the same
guy that engineered the front wheel drive did work for
Jeep too!

The nuts are WAY up inside the dash, coated with thick
undercoating and behind the magnet on the speaker.

I had to have help, but I ended up putting the 1/2
inch open end wrench in a pair of vise grips (to
extend reach) and fighting with it for over an hour to
get two bolts out!

Clean as much of the undercoating gunk off the area of
the nuts so that you can get a wrench on them. I
never did get a box end or socket to work, and they
are too far up to get vise grips on. Patience.

To get the new ones on, I did as below and locked the
nuts in a pair of needle nose vise grips, centered the
nut in the hole and then threaded the bolt to it.

...BYW, I only have one mirror when I take the doors
off. I didn't have the patience to do the passenger
mirror.

Hope this helps.

Blake.....sorry to hear you feel that way. I would gladly answer your question, but I have no knowledge about XJ axles, what ever I told you may or may not be true....ie., it would be a guess on my part. Would you rather have that or no answer at all?

I know you already know this because of your post....but it is neat to see that you too are bored at work and whining.. ;)

Agreed. A few days ago I posted a question regarding the interchangeability of XJ and TJ rear axle shafts. I received no response whatsoever. When I first joined the club, I asked several questions regarding my old CJ and people always responded with good ideas or suggestions.

Now, this club / mailing list has become full of people sitting at work bored just wanting something to whine about.

I would like to relay some statistics. Last night I sent a simple post to the AZVJC (Un-Organized) and to the Arizona Dust Devils (organized) forums requesting input on axles for the front Dana 30 on my CJ. Thru 2 pm today I have received ONE reply from the 1000+ AZVJC members and it was a smartass/comedic comment telling me to buy a Dana 60. From the Arizona Dust Devils 27 members I have received 4 responses with suggestions, personal experiences or questions, but no smart ***/comedic remarks. I got the same type of statistical response when I have asked other questions. Is the problem that I have a CJ and of the 1000 or so members of THE AZVJC there are very few CJ's . Or are my questions to stupid to warrant an intelligent response. This may be just an anomaly, but I am starting to get a complex. Just curios if anyone else experiences this kind of thing. Based on these statistics I would conclude that organized is better than un-organized.

Josh,
A 99 TJ Dana 35 rear axle is a c-clip axle. Yes, u-joints among TJ years
are the same. '98 joints will fit your '99.

Okay people I need to understand this. I have a 99 tj with a dana 35
rear and 30 front. How do I find out if this is a "c" or not? From
what I understand the "c" stands for custom not c-clip? How do I
know if I have a c-clip? I have read posts where people have said
the have a spare passenger side axle, I assume that this is because
the diff is off center and the axles are differn't in length. I am
asking all of this because from what I understand the 35 is
notoriously weak and I cannot at this time afford the super kit but
would like to have a spare for the trail. Also when I go to checker
to get u-joints they don't have a listing for the 99 tj???? How many
U-joints are there and are they all the same (front vs. back). Can I
use U-joints listed for a 98?
Well Thanks for the info in advance.

Uhmmmm... The rear bushings for the control arms are in the control
arms. Are you talking about the bushings for the front upper control
arms? I can understand why they won't honor the warranty. Here's why.
The aftermarket control arms do not have the same angle on the bushings
as the factory models and tend to tear them sideways, particularly if
your aftermarket arms have poly bushings or factory rubber on the body
end. Rubber bushings are not made to last indefinitely and can only
take so much abuse. When I had mine replaced (way after the warranty ran
out), the mechanic who worked on the ZJ said that I should expect to be
replacing the bushings more frequently as a result of the change in
geometry. I had to agree with him on that one. To slow down the
deterioration of these bushings, make sure the front UCAs have
heim-joints (or johnny joints) on the body end.
