Okay, I caught the Jeep thing......yes, it hurts when I pee and my family is living off of Ramen and Mac & Cheese BUT.....We are looking for ANOTHER Jeep for the wife....She gets bored ridng shotgun and thought that it would be a good idea to get her one of her own...........Prefer an XJ so that she can run errands, take the little one to school etc What does everyone say about the "pre-1992" 4.0L engines. I understand that the fuel injection system is junk (renix), any comments on that? I also know that per the "book" there is a 20 hp difference between the post-92 era pre 92-era 4.0's. What is the "max" mileage for a 4.0 with automatic that you folks would consider "safe and reliable". Finally, does anyone have a rig that they are looking to get rid of? I so, let me know. Thanks.
*********UPDATE**********

Well, we got the wife her own XJ.....perfect timing as I rolled the "Family" rig Saturday at Scorpion.....still looking for a vehicle for my younger brother though. Wouldn't mind getting him a little XJ. He would need his more as daily driver then for off road though. Anyone got one, let me know.

Hey many of us prefer the renix systems and they tend to have better longevity, 300,000 miles is common. only half the sensors and easier t work on. with a few easy mods you can gain back that 20 hp easily,

If a 4.0 has been taken care of I would not hesitate to buy one at around 150,000 or more miles on it

the reason most shops dont line the renix is because they dont have the scanners to read the codes

That's what I thought when I first read the header... But I already have the best in both worlds, a well built Jeep and a well built wife that supports it all. :)

Okay, I guess that I should have known better then to phrase my post as I did. I have read enough on this forum to know better.....You guys got me!
Back to the subject at hand though, I appreciate the words of wisdom on the older Cherokees. I guess I will continue looking and trying to get the most for my $$$$.....as for wives though, I wouldn't trade mine for all the Jeep parts in the world! Had her since 1986 and have no complaints.

I had an 87 with the 4.0 and never had any issues with it, Just traded it in on an L J at 205,000miles I think it did ok.

what years? and the nice thing about these is a motor swap is no big deal and used ones are cheap!

one is an 89 with 202,000 and the other is an 89 with 258,000.......the one with the 202,000 was set up pretty decent; 5" lift, 33's, ARB lockers F/R, ADJ Track bar, Rancho 9000's with compressor, etc.... I'm going to check out the other one in a bit to see what all it's like. Supposedly has a 3" lift, no leaks, 18 MPG........we'll see.
