I did these trails in October and posted a fairly detailed description with

You might could do all three in a day but get an early start and plan on

This sounds fine no objections here

Do you mean Dec 6? I can be there. This is a really neat area.

You might be surprised how well these rigs do! A stock D90 is pretty impressive! But then again, they have coil suspensions like ZJs and TJs.

Been there, done that! Coke Ovens via Box Canyon and then over the Gila River is a fun day trip. If you head out via Battle Axe Rd, it turns into long day. I plan on leading a trip in the reverse direction over SuperBowl weekend. This trail gets interesting when it gets wet! In late January you are guaranteed an interesting trip!

Linda -
The trip scheduled for the 6th (Sunday) is Apache Leap. It looks like we'll be doing Box/Martinez Canyons and the Coke Ovens the following Saturday (12th).
BTW, as to Apache Leap, I have a question for you. After the rocky slough (class 4 hill; by the power lines), the trail splits at the top...to the right (southwest) the trail heads to SR177 (which I've done)... and also splits to the left (southeast), which I've explored for only a short distance. This latter trail appears to drop down into Devil's Canyon. Do you know if it's possible to loop back to Oak Flats through, or on top of/along side, Devil's Canyon? Just curious.
Also, I've done Box/Martinez/Coke Ovens area several times; and have done White Canyon (from Battle Axe); but have never done them as one trip. Any advise on trails, if we decide on the longer trip (or for future reference). I assume (coming from Box/Martinez) that you head down to the Gila, and pick up a trail to the northwest. The area around White Canyon and Copper Butte is ringed with trails, and I was wondering how difficult it would be to make the connection from the west.
I know that the old Jeep trail through Walnut Canyon is no longer passible, and probably hasn't been for quite some time, so I assume you need to turn north well before (well west of) Copper Butte and the Spine.
Thanks.
Doug

As to the By-Pass, it goes a long way around, up a side canyon. I've
never taken it, but a buddy of mine did, and got to the top just fine in
a fairly stock CJ (he couldn't make the rocky slough). He did indicate
that the by pass was not a cake walk though...probably class 3.

Yep! In fact, this is really the funnest way back to pavement. When you drop into that big valley where the windmill is there is a rock trail on the east side that has a couple of switchbacks. It is a steep climb up and then a really steep descent on the other side. This trail leads to what some call a "mini lion's back". Scott Deuty's Apache Leap Trail is a small portion of the Power Line Trail. The entire Power Line trail is a figure-8 which crosses in the big valley and the heads up the trail I mentioned earlier.
See you at the meeting place!

Subject: Trail Rating System
A question was recently asked about the Jeep trail rating system...so for those interested, I thought I'd post the following brief description:
Class 1 - Improved dirt road...no problem for any vehicle. No 4wd needed.
Class 2 - Easy - ok for stock Jeep, some 4wd may be needed, but not necessary.
Class 3 - Moderate - 4wd required; w/ some low range; good all terrain tires also needed. Suspension mods desirable, but not generally necessary.
Class 4 - Hard - Low Range; suspension mods required; limited slip in the rear required; lockers desirable.
Class 5 - Very Hard - Oh my Gaud....Low gears, lockers front and rear, winch, heavily modified vehicle, and a little crazyness all required.

I'm driving a stock TJ with 30" tires. I don't plan on trying the class 4
hill. Are there others in the group who are also planning on bypassing? If
not, I'll probably have to pass on this trip.

I'll call my friend and ask more details about the bypass...how hard it
was, and will post the info. If it's passable by a stock vehicle (which
it should be...his was nearly stock w/ 31's), I'll let you know. Anyone
who doesn't want to do the class 4 hill, we'll be sure you have company
on the bypass. Not a good plan to do it alone, in any event. As I
recall, it took him about 15 minutes or so to rejoin the trail.

Subject: Box / Martinez Canyon and Coke Oven on SATURDAY 12th
Hi all,
Thank you. There were no objections to doing this trip on SATURDAY 12/12.
Actually, many prefered doing it on a saturday. So the trip stands for
saturday.
My boss with the Range Rover will more than likely not make it. Sorry for
getting the hopes up for those of you with winches. He feels like he will be
teased too much. I told him that we were all mature professionals and that
the thought would not even occur to us (NOT .....).
See you all on the 12th. A good meeting place for this trip which I'd like to
suggest is the gas station on Rt 60, just past the Rt79 exit to florence. The
gas station is on the North side of Rt. 60 (just past the Rt79 turn-off). How
does 8:00 a.m. sound. Its probably another 20 minutes from there to the start
of the trail.
Later,
Eric

Saturday's fine (the 12th). For a meeting time, I suggest 9a, and a good
place to air down and gather is at Price Rd., north of Florence, off
SR79. That way, you don't have to stop and gather twice.
Directions from Phoenix:
- Take US 60 east to Florence Junction, head south on SR79 toward
Florence.
- As you start getting close to Florence, you'll cross some RR
tracks; Price Road (which heads off to the east) is a dirt road right
by the tracks. As I recall, there's a sign for a gravel operation
there.
Directions from the southeast Valley:
- Take SR87 toward Coolidge/Florence.
- Continue on SR287 to Florence.
- Follow signs to SR79 North.
- Just out side of town will be the RR tracks, and Price Road, which
heads off to the east.
Looking forward to both trips (Apache Leap this Sunday; and Box/Martinez
on Saturday the 12th)

Great! I'll be there. And it sounds like I'll have some company on the
bypass. Looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday. Any thoughts on how the
weather might impact the trip? I heard we may be getting some rain tomorrow.

Clarification on the directions I just sent. The long grade I referred
to is east of Superior. Gas up in Superior, then continue on US60 east
till Oak Flats.

Thanks.

Hi all,
